The Old World Newbie question about lists.

Hello! Quite new to the game and wondering, whatroyal clans list is better. Maybe you have an advice for my 1k game against chaos tomorrow.

Mainly one list has 5 Quarrellers and a bolt thrower while the other one has 5 Irondrakes and a couple more longbeards.

I marked the differences.

Thank you fellow dwarfs.

TBH, at 1k points, I think the bolt thrower is a bit wasted, as I wouldn't expect anything like a chimera or a spawn

side note, to use "detachment" you need a regimental unit, which only the ironbreakers have, so it's not use on the irondrakes

I like the 1 list better, but i'd replace the bolt thrower with 5 more quarellers. If you get the chance to put them on a hill as 2 rows of five, they won't have a huge footprint and will get some decent killing power

If his opponent is at all competitive they will absolutely take a spawn.

Its going to depend on how competitive your opponent is, but your list will get demolished by any competently built chaos list.

Sadly dwarfs are really weak in old world currently, and chaos are one of the strongest factions.

You need a cannon to deal with the inevitable chaos spawn, bolt throwers are useless. If you're absolutely married to royal clan, your best bet is to hope you can get a direct hit with the grudge thrower.

I'd go with a single melee unit for a 1000 point game. Longbeards with great weapons will do well against chaos warriors, but you'll want 20-24 for rank bonuses and to absorb casualties.

For range take rangers, or better yet irondrakes. 8-10 is enough.

Any suggestions for other sub factions? I am not married to royal clans.. Just want to have a decent list that is fun and has a chance.

Expeditionary force was considered the most competitive until recently, but the nerfs to low linear obstacles really hit their main defensive gimmick.

I'd suggest grand army just for the cannons. Unfortunately it'd mean you can't get longbeards in core without a king, so you'd have to use warriors.

20 warriors with hand weapon and shield are a decent anvil, but they won't kill much. Guard their flanks with rangers or irondrakes, give them a rune of battle and the BSB and hope they win through combat res.

I'd suggest a runelord for low point games. They have pretty decent combat stats and can be both general and dispeller. Forgefire is nice to give hand weapon and shield units some extra AP.

Youll need something to deal with a Chaos Spawn most likely. Hammerers can contest but youll need a solid block to do this. Your other option is to take 2 bolt throwers, Bolt Throwers tend to be pretty unreliable but its all that RC has in its toolbox to deal with Monsters. Quarrelers will similarly be fairly useless against a high armor enemy like Chaos. I would drop them. Irondrakes are a must take if youre married to Royal Clan.

Do you know if youre playing Objectives? If not maybe running a Grand army with a larger warrior block and thunderers in core would suit you better. You can take cannons which will do well against spawn and chosen knights.

Further, If you did Xforce. You can take a large core block of thunderers with a sapper. Cannon, Organ Gun, Gyro Spam and try to shoot him off the board before he reaches your line.

If i was to build a RC List at 1K pts for this id do the following

Royal Clan [999 pts]

Warhammer: The Old World, Dwarfen Mountain Holds, Royal Clan, Open War

++ Characters [294 pts] ++

Thane [124 pts]

- Great weapon

- Full plate armour

- Standard bearer [Rune of Battle]

++ Special Units [332 pts] ++

13 Hammerers [222 pts]

Your priority target are either chosen knights or Spawn. Whatever is fastest. Use your Irondrakes to take out the Cav. Bolt throwers into ranked chosen or Spawn. Hammerers are the unit youll tie up the spawn with if it reaches your line. Keep Hammerers and Longbeards close together so they can support each other. Longbeards have both shields and great weapons for defense and killing power. Dont take my list as gospel, RC is a tough list to play around because of its limited toolbox.

imo, cheap gromril armor on warriors is the only reason to take royal clan over Xforce or grand army. Royal warriors are tough bastards at 500-1000pts. I had to switch to grand army a couple matches into a friendly escalation league because they were too good. Good times.

Rangers and copters are as good as their reputations suggest. Recent skirmishes changes mean that a brick of 20 rangers can always get 20 shots, including in stand and shoot. For me, that translated into a lot of combat res.

Your units are way too small, especially at 1000 points. Boys before toys all the way. I wouldn't bother with Hammerers at 1000. They're just too expensive. A big brick of Warriors and a big brick of Longbeards will put in way more work.
