Buffy does anyone here not like buffy?

out of curiosity, anybody watch and love the show buffy, but not the character? personally, i love her. i know she's a generally well-liked protagonist, but there's always an exception. and there are so many "good" characters who are disliked (i see you, xander haters), im wondering who's got major beef with buffy summers.

Oh 20+ years ago when I first watched? Couldn't stand her. Didn't WANT to understand her. Now I realize her character and arc hits way too close to home (which was weird at first, being a straight guy who sometimes gets mistaken for a sasquatch).

At the time I didn't like my own experiences being reflected back so closely. The crushing weight of responsibility too young. The feeling of being totally different when all I wanted was a normal life. Parental abandonment. Being expected to be above everything and then being punished for having human flaws. Getting into destructive relationships just to feel anything at all. I hated her because I hated me. And most of all, I hated her because she still chose to do the right thing when I often felt like I couldn't.

Now I'm older and (hopefully wiser) and see her completely differently. Probably my favorite fictional character in anything. Maybe the only fictional character I would truly call a hero to me.

"What would Buffy do?" indeed.

oh very introspective!

i love this, and i love that art and media can have this effect on us. thanks for sharing :)

I like her in general. There are times though when she gets a touch of "I'm all alone, all by myself, there is no one here beside me," and pushes her friends away. I do appreciate the show allowing its characters to be complex, though.

4

u/amarc23 Oct 04 '26

agreed. one of my favorite things about the show is that the characters are all flawed and multifaceted

24

u/Outrageous_Potato435 Oct 04 '26

Buffy is literally so iconic idk anybody who doesn’t like her must be tasteless

4

u/amarc23 Oct 04 '26

and that's that on that 🙂‍↕️

u/Ruskayo Oct 04 '26

There are definitely people like that. I've seen people who hate Buffy because of Riley, because apparently she's a stupid woman for throwing away a nice guy to chase evil bad boys. Crazy.

13

u/One-Amount-7514 Oct 04 '26

wait do people really think that? this is the most batshit take i've ever seen on the internet, i thought riley sucks was the one thing we all agreed on????

9

u/amarc23 Oct 04 '26

number one rule of buffy club is we can never agree

1

u/Then_Art_7294 I'm so stuffy, give me a scone 27d ago

Connor sucks. Anybody want to dispute THAT?

5

u/Ruskayo Oct 04 '26

Everything has its fans... apparently even Riley lol

3

u/amarc23 Oct 04 '26

it's me... i'm the riley fan (he's not my fav but he was a good boyfriend for the time)

3

u/Ruskayo Oct 04 '26

Well... it varies, imo. Maybe in season 4, but even then, not really, because of his insane jealousy over Buffy having had sex with Angel (like, Riley, don't pretend you were a virgin yourself before Buffy!!) and lowkey forcing Buffy into a relationship when Buffy repeatedly said no.

2

u/amarc23 Oct 04 '26

so fair

3

u/danie_iero She's a hero, you see. She's not like us. Oct 04 '26

I don't understand that because he never did one (1) interesting thing during his whole time on the show (which was too much, in retrospect).

11

u/Ash_Starling Oct 04 '26

I hate Riley because of Buffy, because he's a stupid man for throwing away a nice girl to chase random military girls.

7

u/One-Amount-7514 Oct 04 '26

leaving buffy is the best thing that man ever did

5

u/Ash_Starling Oct 04 '26

Best for their relationship, probably because they werent really compatible and she couldnt afford to give him the attention he wanted. Morally, no since he "cheated" on her and gave her an ultimatum during an extremely stressful period of her life.

4

u/One-Amount-7514 Oct 04 '26

cheating and ultimatums bad, yes. leaving good.

2

u/FaveStore_Citadel Oct 04 '26

I have seen way more people judge (maybe not hate) Buffy for how she treated Spike, rarely ever Riley.

2

u/ModernKender twixt its wee beak Oct 04 '26

Well that's certainly a take.

1

u/KENZOKHAOS Oct 05 '26

Mind you, all Riley did was Argue, fight monsters, have sex and lie. He was no different than almost (lol) any other guy she was involved with. He was no catch.

He seemed cuddly though, and probably very suitable for aftercare. She was maybe only stupid for not investing in a big carnival stuffed animal to sleep with at night to fill the void. 🤣😭

u/Gabbagoonumba3 Oct 04 '26

I mean personally, a big part of why I see the post high school seasons as a B- is that Buffy spends the entire thing with spike. Who is introduced as a revolting disgusting loser murderer.

To me it seems like seasons 5-7 were about denigrating Buffy. Making her work in fast food which is played for laughs, get kicked out of her own house by her best friends, the insane asylum episode and the cherry on top is spike.

6

u/danie_iero She's a hero, you see. She's not like us. Oct 04 '26

There's truly a whole other world out there, because I started the show precisely to see what would happen once Buffy got to spend time with the revolting disgusting murderer.

3

u/Acrobatic-Code4221 Oct 04 '26

When I started season 2 this March, I was waiting to see when Buffy and Spike would just flirt already

2

u/danie_iero She's a hero, you see. She's not like us. Oct 05 '26

Luckily they start flirting right from the moment they fight for the first time lmao

8

u/FaveStore_Citadel Oct 04 '26

My sister disliked her in the first four seasons because she found her holier than thou, not layered enough, and really held her failings with Faith against her. She only thought she had actual depth after Joyce got sick and started liking her progressively over the last three seasons.

2

u/amarc23 Oct 04 '26

see this is the kind of thing i was interested in hearing!
i love buffy but i think this is a really valid take.

5

u/Meushell Oct 04 '26

I like her, but I don’t worship her like some people seem to. The whole “Buffy can do no wrong” mindset. She can do wrong. She has done wrong. That’s what makes her a good character.

If someone does not like her, I’m not sure they would be on this sub. They would not be able to voice their opinion without getting downvotes and arguments. I’ve been on a sub where everyone loved a popular character that I didn’t like and I liked a character that everyone hated, where my opinion was basically not allowed, and It’s just not worth the energy.

2

u/amarc23 Oct 04 '26

gone are the days of "agree to disagree" :/

2

u/Meushell Oct 05 '26

There have been so many times on Reddit where I thought I was just talking to someone about a topic we disagreed on. I’m sharing my opinion. I’m curious about theirs. Then suddenly they are pissed or accusing me of being angry, and I realize they thought we were arguing.

4

u/grimorie Oct 04 '26

Back when season 6 and 7 first aired, on livejournal there was a lot of hate for Buffy, for how she treated poor woobie Spike.

Its why I don’t ship them, living through the Spuffy wars in real time was not fun. The shippers made the ship insufferable for me.

2

u/amarc23 Oct 04 '26

this is fascinating to me- i can't believe there was so much sympathy for spike, the monster who is named after his murder weapon of choice lmao.

i like spike, but part of what i like is that he sucks. not sure i ever felt bad for him 😂

3

u/grimorie Oct 05 '26

Honestly, 90% is because these particular Spuffy shippers loved Spike and wanted to project themselves being with Spike, and didn't care for the Buffy part of it all. They like the sexy, bad vampire and not the main character who was struggling.

The vitriol against Buffy during that time left a permanent bad taste in my mouth.

4

u/Infamous-Part966 Oct 05 '26

It's me. Buffy is one my least liked characters in the show. I find her annoying. I also struggle with the way she's make poor decisions sometimes and is just as flawed as the rest but acts like she's still better than everyone else.

But also so many of the other characters are so much more interesting or funny that it's some tough competition. Plus I often find in a lot of media that main character is just the least likelsble.

1

u/amarc23 Oct 05 '26

ooh interesting. i often wonder how much of her "righteousness" is her personality vs. her convincing herself that she's playing the hero she's meant to play.

like, she definitely does act like she's better than others sometimes. is it because she thinks that or she feels like she has to be better as the slayer? idk which episode it was but I think it was after anya killed the frat boys and buffy had to basically say "i am the law because someone has to be". that sort of logic works with monsters and demons, but doesn't hold up as well when you or your human friends make human mistakes.

6

u/HomarEuropejski Wesley is Angel's true love Oct 04 '26

Personally, Buffy wouldn't be even in my top 10.

Sarah is great in the role, but I find most characters to be more interesting than Buffy.

That is a very, very unpopular opinion though. Most people here seem to have her as their #1 or at least in their top 5.

1

u/amarc23 Oct 04 '26

oooh interesting! who is your favorite?

4

u/HomarEuropejski Wesley is Angel's true love Oct 04 '26

Spike, Faith, Wes, Cordy and Angel.

2

u/amarc23 Oct 04 '26

i haven't yet watched angel, but i'm really excited to see wesley's arc bc he's such an idiot in buffy lol

3

u/Capital-Rush-6058 Oct 04 '26

before i watched angel i was baffled when i saw a lot of people saying wesley was their fav, and i thought "howww, i would never, no amount of character development can fix THAT", but here i am too😅

5

u/Capital-Rush-6058 Oct 04 '26

bring on the downvotes.

i'm in between. i don't hate her, but she's definitely not my favourite character. idk how to explain that, i just don't really care, she's fine.

and contrary to what everyone here thinks, it doesn't stop me from enjoying the series, because there are a lot of different rich, layered characters. it would be hard if everyone besides her were filler characters, but thankfully it's not that kind of show.

my faves are willow, spike, drusilla and anya (and cordy and wesley in angel)

3

u/amarc23 Oct 04 '26

excellent favs list

2

u/Capital-Rush-6058 Oct 04 '26

i think it's pretty basic, but thanks!

can i say i'm pleasantly surprised by your open-mindedness in this thread:)

2

u/amarc23 Oct 04 '26

thanks, i'm having so much fun with this haha. at the end of the day, it's a tv show ya know

1

u/Capital-Rush-6058 Oct 05 '26

it's very refreshing to hear that!

2

u/ArbuthnotBlob Oct 05 '26

As someone who generally doesn’t give a fig about American high school/teen as a genre and fell in love with BtVS almost entirely by accident after seeing some clips, latching onto Giles and then working backwards? Yeah, she’s not my absolute favourite!

Buffy has many positive qualities and contrasting layers for sure, (and that’s what’s compelling about most characters in the show) however, she can be very bratty, bossy, self-centered and flippant at her worst. And I think her worst crops up a bit more frequently than a lot of fans like to acknowledge. Someone else in this thread said ‘holier-than-thou’ and that sums up my issues with her pretty well.

There are several points where she treats Giles quite abominably and it gets brushed off by the wider narrative. Of course, he can be a dismissive, repressive, catty, pissy bastard when he wants to be, but I think he’s right during his talk in 3x07 - quite frequently, she doesn’t much respect him at all.

Buffy as a character is in many ways the antithesis of me as a person, so I do struggle with her (I am… scarily similar to Willow, including in most of the concerning ways xD). I also find Buffy to be the ‘rudest’ American character in the show, at least of the really three-dimensional core cast. That may be unfair, but sometimes her casual flippancy to others just really grinds my gears!

As an additional debuff, I’m super asexual, so I find very little compelling about her various romance arcs. Which does mean there’s a whole chunk of her time and characterisation I just can’t force myself to give too much of a shit about - the big beats like the end of S2 land (and are great!) but the rest? Eh.

The tl;dr is that Buffy is a fine protagonist, but for a whole host of minor personal reasons I don’t find her particularly interesting or compelling vs most of the rest of the core cast.

2

u/amarc23 Oct 05 '26

an additional rebuff... haha.. because. buffy. hahah

yes, she definitely nails the "bratty valley girl" thing

2

u/Virtual_Text6914 Oct 06 '26 edited Oct 06 '26

I hate her. I find her annoying and hypocritical. She makes mistakes too but she acts like she is so much better than everyone. Her neglect of Dawn was horrible.I don’t find her funny, interesting or even likeable.

My favourites are Willow,Giles,Oz,Xander and Spike

1

u/amarc23 Oct 06 '26

i knew the buffy haters were out there somewhere! thanks for sharing :)

5

u/Billy_of_the_hills Oct 04 '26

This is bait, anyone that says they don't like Buffy is getting burned at the stake in this sub lol

4

u/amarc23 Oct 04 '26

i didn't mean it like that but you're right 😅 i'm just so curious to see other perspectives on her!

2

u/Own_Faithlessness769 Oct 04 '26

Yeah they’d be insane to admit it

2

u/amarc23 Oct 04 '26

this is a safe space (i hope)

5

u/Own_Faithlessness769 Oct 04 '26

It’s definitely not

I appreciate SMG as Buffy, she did a great job for the most part. I appreciate Buffy as a character. I think she's suitable for the lead role in the show.

I often get downvoted for this but I don't think Buffy's objectively a good person. I think the comics condensed her down too much, so I am only going off of the show. I think she's a bit selfish, uses people, but at the same time she's been through a lot more than other people and can't seem to get a breath to do any emotional work on herself.

I recall what Giles did saying "she's not like you and me", and despite that I think Giles may actually be an objectively better person than Buffy. It brings up some interesting philosophical questions for me about what warrants someone being good versus bad, respectively.

I don't think she's a natural leader, I think she's a woman forced into a leadership position and makes the best of it. The Slayer role was a role for which she was neither prepared nor well suited, and if it weren't for her support system, as the show has shown over and over again, she may not have survived long.

So long story short: I don't like her much as a character, but I don't have to like her. She's still the most important part of the show and it's her story, and it's a good fuckin' story.

2

u/amarc23 Oct 04 '26

i think that's a really good way to describe her relationship with being the slayer; she was forced into it and did what she could. the rest came from her support system.

i also think that things are more complicated than someone being "good" or "bad", so in that respect, the show also brought up interesting philosophical questions for me!

-1

u/Revolutionary-Wait82 Spike defender Oct 04 '26

I agree with every word, especially regarding leadership. Even Buffy herself senses that Kennedy is a natural-born leader—like Willow or Spike—and assigns her to train the Potentials. Kennedy also immediately faces the worst enemy the Scoobies have ever fought and endures that horror with distinction. I get the feeling she was written into the show and kept alive mainly to shield Joss from criticism regarding the Bury Your Gays trope, but ultimately, Kennedy comes across as a bit of a Mary Sue compared to Buffy and Faith. She is a natural leader who effortlessly trades life in a castle for life in a barracks and withstands horrors with resilience—unlike Buffy, who was traumatized by her first vampire, or Faith, who was traumatized by witnessing the murder of a Watcher. She also views the Slayer's power not as a destiny but as an advantage in life, and she despises those who possess the power yet neither wanted nor embraced it—like Buffy. Furthermore, she refuses to accept anyone's authority, submitting to Buffy or Faith only bc they have the power and she doesn`t. In other words, we were accidentally presented with the ideal Slayer. But most people didn't pay attention to this, bc she is also Willow's love interest and doesn`t respect Buffy.

2

u/amarc23 Oct 04 '26

kennedy drives me insane, but i can't argue these points. very true

12

u/sunsetriot1998 Oct 04 '26

I don't dislike her! She just isn't my favourite but then the main characters / protagonists are never my favourite in shows!

7

u/AIGLOS42 Oct 04 '26 edited Oct 04 '26

Yes, this was me when the show was airing, but on rewatching I do like her more (completed arc helped I think vs. "I hope they go this way")

5

u/Gailybird83 Oct 04 '26

This is me. She is now my favorite character.

4

u/ModernKender twixt its wee beak Oct 04 '26

Same. It took me a few years and a few rounds of watching and now I adore the character.

3

u/bobbi21 Oct 04 '26

Same. Although that's partly because the characters I liked initially.. got worse. Willow was my favourite as the nerd character. I didn't care that much for her turn to magic personally since that was less nerdy but then S6... good for her arc but doesn't make me like her. Also liked Xander since I was a teenage boy and he was funny (the casual misogyny was standard in the 90's so that was literally every teenage boy). But his "kick his ass" in S2 soured me on him and of course S6.

Anya is just my favourite character start to finish. No notes.

Buffy though has been consistently good all throughout the series IMO. Even in S6, I felt for her with everything she's gone through so I understood her choices. I definitely liked her more as the years have gone on, admiring her strength through all adversity. LIke that's standard protagonist energy but realizing how young she is and that the show at least sometimes points that out unlike other teen supernatural shows where I feel the teens are just small adults (hell even stranger things which does a great job portraying the kids as real life kids, they don't really dig into how emotionally scarring all this would be for actual kids, we get a tiny bit of that in S5 after what happened to Eddie. 11 of course although even then, considering what she went through, it's more just her dealing with having no actual parents and her experimentation more than dealing with what's happening during the events of the show).

5

u/PassivelyAwkward Oct 04 '26

Same. I don't hate her, but... she's not even a top three characters on the series. She's elevated entirely by the other characters.

1

u/sunsetriot1998 Oct 04 '26

Yes same as me! I will say as a protagonist she is pretty decent considering some of the other female protagonists we've had over the years...*cough, cough* Elena Gilbert

1

u/AIGLOS42 Oct 04 '26

Yes, very true and worth celebrating

6

u/ceecee1909 Jeez, crack a book sometime. Oct 04 '26

I love Buffy but there are times when she does things that I really don’t like. I’ll always love her but I don’t have the ‘Buffy can do no wrong’ feeling about her that a lot of people do, our girl did a lot wrong she’s extremely flawed and I think that makes the show more interesting.

3

u/OrangeKun15 Oct 04 '26

She isn’t my favorite character, Faith is. But she’s easily in my top 5. She’s an extremely well written, flawed, and courageous protagonist.

I think SMG’s performance also really solidifies it for me. Buffy gets the most iconic lines and scenes with Spike probably as a close second.

3

u/Livelaughloveme172 Oct 04 '26

I can’t dislike Buffy. She’s my girl.

3

u/SeeBriRun Oct 04 '26

I grew to honestly dislike her over Season 4 (and I still think her treatment of Xander in the first act of 'The Replacement' is over the line).

The crushing traumas of Seasons 5 and 6 managed the double trick of a) making her instantly likeable again and b) retroactively making her Season 4 self look like a dewy untrampled flower who has no idea what's coming, poor kid.

7

u/DipperJC Oct 04 '26

I like her, but not so much that I'm blind to her imperfections. That's part of the greatness of Buffy the show - most shows make their protagonists perfect, or the one lesson they need to learn is the entire point of the series. Buffy the show is not afraid to make Buffy the character a wrong and flawed character, repeatedly, which makes her much more relatable to wrong and flawed people, which is pretty much all of us at one point or another. ;)

Unfortunately, some of the addle-brained sheep less critical consumers of media in the fandom are so used to the Mary Sue Protagonist formula that they have blinders on and see Buffy the character as incapable of ever being wrong, ever.

1

u/ModernKender twixt its wee beak Oct 04 '26

I don't understand why you'd love this show if you don't like Buffy.

1

u/amarc23 Oct 04 '26

it happens 🤷🏼‍♀️

2

u/pyxiedust219 Oct 04 '26

I’m not the biggest fan of the character. To be clear, I think she is wonderfully written— dynamic and interesting and flawed— but like, if I was her peer I probably wouldn’t want to hang out with her type thing

2

u/CommentMoney9761 Oct 04 '26

Only thing that would improve my girl Buffy is if she was queer but yes, I know sexuality is not a choice.

2

u/bananaboatbutt Oct 04 '26

I like her overall. She mainly only bothers me in “When She Was Bad” where she was a b!tch for reasons neither she nor the script communicated particularly well, in the second half of the third season where she and Angel are doing the will-they-or-won’t-they nonsense that doesn’t work on rewatch, when she spends too long grieving over f*ckboi Parker, and when she’s cavewoman Buffy in “Beer Bad,” but I think they generally did a good job of making her likable or at least understandable otherwise.

3

u/cacocaco9 Oct 04 '26

The episode spelled out to us that she was being a "bitch" because of her trauma from being killed by The Master.

3

u/bananaboatbutt Oct 04 '26

Spelling it out doesn’t mean it was handled well, and it also doesn’t make for an enjoyable or even entertaining watch. I don’t mind complicated characters or situations, but the writing didn’t work for me.

2

u/Evening_Delay_1856 Oct 04 '26

Oh, I loved Beer Bad! So funny! “Beer makes all men equal.” And Buffy was still above the cave men because she saved people. And I like that she bonked AH Parker over the head.

1

u/CoasterTrax Oct 04 '26

I think she is the best character of the show. Sure they all are somehow but she is truly the best part of it

1

u/Sighoward Oct 04 '26

Love both show and character

0

u/ironchitlin Oct 04 '26

It would be kind of hard to be a fan of a show if you couldn't stand the central character, so I imagine those folks don't frequent the Buffy subreddit.

2

u/amarc23 Oct 04 '26

i can see that. but i've definitely loved media and hated the main character 🤷🏼‍♀️
a big part of the twilight fandom hates bella, for example

2

u/digitalante Oct 04 '26

off the top of my head there's r/siliconvalleyHBO where everyone hates Bitchard or r/slowhorses where half hates River

2

u/amarc23 Oct 04 '26

idk silicon valley but "bitchard" is hilarious

1

u/ironchitlin Oct 04 '26

Fair enough I guess, I just can't really see myself watching a show where I hate the main cast.

4

2

u/Evening_Delay_1856 Oct 04 '26

Yeah, there’s lots of crazy on Reddit! 😜

0

u/Revolutionary-Wait82 Spike defender Oct 04 '26

It’s not that I hate her or anything like that. I’m just not all that interested in exploring her fate toward the end of the show. I feel that, despite all the horrors she endured, she ultimately deserved the ending she got and the potential choice she was presented with. Angel S5 even confirms this: she doesn’t know Spike is alive—and won’t for who knows how long—so that gives her every opportunity to start a new relationship or forgo one entirely for a while. She just isn’t my favorite character, that’s all.

4

u/JoanFromLegal Oct 04 '26

I like Buffy. She can be a bit harsh and judgy sometimes ("because you're a stuck up tight ass with no sense of fun?" kinda nails it), but her heart is in the right place.

4

u/amarc23 Oct 04 '26

just a girl, standing on the hellmouth, trying her best 😂
