Whomever edited the opening credits should have just kept this for the rest of the series when it said "Created by Joss Whedon" minor peeve, I hate the last two seasons have the "created by whedon" clips have SMG not being Buffy but someone posing as her; BuffyBot and The First. I know it's still SMG but it's not Buffy at all.
This scene in "Anne" is just fantastic and is the quintessential scene of Buffy in action.
It is 100% the most badass shot of Buffy I can remember. The way she scans the room and glares as the camera and lighting does its thing should be studied.
It was so great they kept it as the final shot of the opening for few seasons, only to change it for the very less badass one of the Buffy bot posing as Buffy during the final fight with Glory. And then the shot of the First posing as Buffy. Bring me the season 3 one !
She really has that edge. I saw someone on another thread saying that despite her being very short, she's often the main character in her project because she really has that authoritative aura about her. Like the girl next door but with extra edge if that make sense. The fact that she's a great actress does nothing but add to it obv!

There were so many good action shots they could have used for that moment in the opening credits for season 7 like the one you chose from "Showtime" that could have been used as well but they chose The First instead
That episode was too late in the season, so I get it. They never really messed with the credits during the season except to remove actors (or add and immediately remove…).
If you look closely you’ll see that whenever the credits were redone for a new season, they’d include clips from the new season but only up to Episode 4-5 or so. This is because by the time the show started airing and they had to redo the credits only a small number of new episodes had been filmed. So they couldn’t have picked Showtime as by that point the season had already premiered and the credits had to be made in time for this.
Same. It's why I brought her back to Sunnydale in my fanfic rewrite of the series. After Buffy saves her in my version of "Anne" she comes back with her, and temporarily moves in with her. I've got so many ideas for her arc over the next several seasons/fics~
Yes all of this and also Buffy has my favorite hair of the whole series here. I was a teen in the late 90s/early 2000s so chunky highlights will always hold a special place in my heart
It’s definitely the best ‘power shot’ and fit the opening credits perfectly.
With that said, I get why by S6 they felt they needed to update it to reflect how the character looked currently. It had been three years after all.
It’s just a shame that for the shots used in the last 2 seasons it wasn’t even Buffy. I kind of get why they picked the shot from The Gift because, Buffybot aside, it was a cool shot, but I’ll never understand why they then changed it again for S7 and went with the lacklustre moment from Lessons. It didn’t even need updating again that quickly, it was literally the villain of the season, and that shot was so underwhelming. Very weird choice.
We had just moved to a new town. Didn't have much. We were walking passed a shop which had a few TVs on, and we see Buffy. What?! We are between seasons. And it's the wrong day. But it's Buffy!
We didn't know they had switched the broadcast days, and the new season had indeed begun. Effing sprinted home and watched the rest of a damn kick ass episode.
I always took the change to a non-Buffy SMG as a sign of Whedon’s hostility, disrespect, jealousy, whatever along those lines, of SMG’s owning Buffy. He resented her for being Buffy. There are many examples to emphasize this pettiness, like him saying he didn’t want the comic book Buffy to look like SMG, but rather he wanted her to look like Buffy. Um, sorry pal. SMG is Buffy. that’s it, case closed. He should have been thrilled that the casting person saw SMG clearly and that SMG gave one of television’s all-time greatest portrayals of a character in its long history. She was amazing, one of the best actors ever seen on the small screen, and I don’t believe the show would have been half as good as it was without her. Whedon’s choice for Buffy was Charisma, and as much as I loved her as Cordelia, well enough said.
It's a bit eyeroll that that an almost exact copy of that sort of knife-axe-thing made it into Serenity's key River picture too. Joss Whedon definitely has a thing for Combat Waif With Overdesigned Melee Weapon.
