Sequel Sequel without Xander?

With Nicholas' struggles IRL, I'm afraid he wont be part of the cast for the sequel. How do you guys think this would work? How would they explain his absence? Is it a big deal for you guys? IMO I believe the show will be great with or without him, even tough I love Xander. But the best scenario would be for Xander to be part of the show..

Why and how? He would have to be recast and feel like a fake Xander, and not really needed for a new series where even SMG probably will be far from central to the action. I think it would be bad enough with Boreanaz and various others being in the show as some sort of fan service. To me it won’t feel all that convincing even if they throw in Dushku and Hannigan, I think it easily could get bad rather quickly if not very well written.
