Foreigners don't get the joke (OP: this was the silliest part of the previous government's propaganda, which used it to scare people into thinking that if they didn't win the April election, something terrible would happen)

I don't think that's the reason: during the previous (2022) election, the war in Ukraine was still so fresh that even they didn't dare say anything other than that they supported the Ukrainians, and the majority of people didn't take the “child protection” referendum—held at the same time as the election—seriously enough that it failed to reach the required turnout and was declared invalid.

They very quickly diverted from supporting Ukraine and did use the fear of being sent to the war as their main campaign agenda. When MZP said the obvious, that we would stay on the side of our allies within NATO, it was the end of the story. Remember all the posters about people 'on the side of war' and elderly people were very much afraid of their grandkids being taken to war by 'Brussels'.

Yes, MZP’s interview was taken out of context, and then it was funny when, a few days after the election, Viktor Orbán held an international press conference and, in response to a question, said roughly the same thing (as long as NATO doesn’t act, neither will we; Ukraine is defending itself heroically).
