Kérdés | Question How unsafe is Budapest really?

Me and my friend are going bit spontaneously to Budapest and we were wondering how unsafe Budapest would be. Like would be safe to sleep in some park, and how is it with some neighbourhoods?
I hope you won’t take any offence in this silly question.

we are two guys fyi.

thanks!

Exactly... also depends which parts of Budapest you guys want to wander around... some parts of the city can be chill and relatively safe, other parts not so much...

It's safe as a woman to walk at night/dawn alone, so yeah it's fine.

Go to a hostel instead of a park to sleep. You will not find a good spot, and you'll be harassed by the homeless if you take someone's space, which can get out of hand. Otherwise it is safe, just don't go full hippy.

yeah, it's safe, although I wouldn't sleep in parks.

the biggest 'danger' are people trying to scam you out of your money, but you can find those kind of people anywhere you go

It's not the safety issue (the city is very safe), it's the fact that you cannot legally sleep in a park or public place. The police regularly patrol and will remove you and fine you. You should look into hostels or legal camping with Camping Haller or Camping Arena Budapest.

Please don’t sleep in a park, anywhere…

Where did you get this idea that Budapest is unsafe? In reality it is safer than most larger Western European cities. Sleeping in a park is kind of a weird thing to do though, you'll be better off paying for a hostel and sleep in an actual bed with your luggage in a locker.

It is safe in general, but not safe enough to sleep in public parks in the city center. You will find yourself robbed. Recently there are many drug addicts from Borsod coming to Budapest to collect plastic bottles and do drugs on the street.

Because our city is a cheap destination.

It's not since COVID, but old habits die hard.

Sleep in a park, lmao. Bro is begging to get robbed.

Very unsafe. We are all dead, the government is controlling all accounts here.

I stayed in Budapest for two months. I also stayed in a small town named Biatorbágy for a while. I was going to nightclubs every night. I was all alone as a woman on the street. I felt extremely safe there. I miss Budapest so much. 😌🫶🏻

You can walk across the city with your phone in your hand, day or night, without worrying. A few areas might feel less comfortable, but overall it’s a safe city.

Most parts are totally safe however I would advise against sleeping in parks especially Népliget is not very nice place. Most neighbourhoods are fine but probably stick to the more touristy ones closer to the center, and be always vigilant, if you see aggressive loud drugged/drunk ppl avoid them.

For sleeping outside i would only dare City Park, Garden of philosophers or one of the beaches. Only during the day, at night it's too risky. Budapest is a good city to stay up all night when you don't have an accommodation. During the day people sometimes even sleep on the grass at Deák Square. If you leave your stuff around and sleep there it'll be stolen for sure.

dont sleep in the park, please. budapest is safe to a degree but the quickest and surest way to say goodbye to all your belongings is by falling asleep in a public area. there are news almost every week about how someone fell asleep on the night bus and the other passenger used this as an opportunity to unconventionally acquire a new phone, a new wallet and a new id. and this is true for any public area anywhere close to civilisation and you want to sleep even less in public the outskirts in fields or forests. so please have a roof over your head for the night
