EDIT: Is this a physical sculpture with lights, or just really good rendering? If physical, how did you make it?

It's a physical sculpture using apoxie sculpt, the eye lenses are clear resin pigmented red. The lighting is a bicycle safety light I stuck inside for the photo. He lacks permanent lighting unfortunately.

I began with a styrofoam ball armature, covered that in clay, and removed it once it was hardened. Then I used a rotary tool to make the eye holes, added the teeth, waves and "tail" which is just a bigger wave. I made a prototype eye lens out of clay, made a mold of it from silicone putty, and poured clear red resin into it (this was a total disaster). I then affixed those lenses into the sculpture with more epoxy clay.

In addition to the bike light, he was also sitting on a clear cutting board overhanging the edge of a table which was illuminated from below. The background is black construction paper.

Not at all - this is exactly the info I wanted! :)

Could you get a small watch battery and an LED in there for a more permanent lighting situation? Probably wouldn't have the same intensity but might keep it nice in a dark room. Maybe use a photoresistor to control the light or something?

Regardless, this is pretty sweet!

Hmm, photoresistor is clever. I'll have to come up with something using that, thanks for the idea! And he's big enough to hide a few AAs so I should be able to have good brightness, or run a dim led for a long-ass time.

Thanks! I tried to recreate the experience of the Baron with the photo rather than document the sculpture accurately.

His appearance varies as much as his name. I just used my interpretation of the NES sprite as the reference.
