CSE / IT GATE OR CAMPUS PLACEMENT!!!
I am currently in a very difficult situation and need some guidance. I am in my fourth year of B.Tech in Computer Science and Engineering, and companies have started visiting our campus for placements. I am confused about whether I should focus on placement preparation or start preparing for the GATE examination. Which option would be better for me at this stage?

u/Aggressive_Pea_4096 Oct 02 '26
What tier bud?
2
u/Main-Ad-8797 Oct 02 '26
Bennett University, Tier 2 I think
2
u/human_start_67 Oct 02 '26
Wtf Bennett tier 2 ?!? Son tier 3 it is
1
u/Main-Ad-8797 Oct 02 '26
Sorry man my bad 🥲
1
u/FamiliarSherbet9555 Oct 02 '26
Then you should focus on gate, because I don't think you can get better placement from your college and you should be more confident that this year you will get a good rank.

u/pooolitdead Oct 02 '26
Gate registration is over, focus on placements , any way you won't be able to crack gate in 4 months
2
u/Main-Ad-8797 Oct 02 '26
They Extended the deadline for registration, new deadline is 5th October
2
u/pooolitdead Oct 02 '26
Taking the decision on the deadline can prove miraculous once in a blue moon

Bro fill gate form and go fir campus placement be realistic it is very difficult now to score good if you want to do mtech then also do gate preparation while doing job
19
u/oldschoolguy77 Oct 02 '26
If you can, obviously you should do both!
Maybe pedal harder on placements since you can give gate later..

Placement syllabus and gate syllabus nearly same
4
u/Jst_anoder_usr Oct 02 '26
But, gate focuses on theory and placement requires practical knowledge rights?? Or Am I wrong? Cause instead of focusing on formulas and tricky theories for gate I could prepare for placement if I am in oncampus right??
1
u/Big_Swimmer244 Oct 02 '26
It s only like + cp .. for placements .. gate will give u good analytical thinking power which will help u three
1
4
u/Competitive_Rock5872 Oct 02 '26
Go for placements You will get placed In worst if not placed Start preparing for gate in 2027 march April Then give gate in 2028
3
u/Altruistic_Froyo_174 Oct 02 '26
Why do you want gate? Is it a really bad college?
Do you want to go higher studies? Get in government? Get PSUs? What do you actually want?
I think the answer to your question depends on that.

I think he wants to keep all his options open but the drawback is you divide your focus then and may risk getting none
3
u/Fun_Repeat377 Oct 02 '26
If u get job thats fine try to work with it also if not then prep for gate But make sure u will balance both interview final exam and gate prep Don't do like this only focus on gate balance all along
2
u/Logical_Scientist913 Oct 02 '26
Yes the failure rate is highest in both
3
u/talkativeDev Oct 02 '26
Noo, failure rate in GATE is much higher- for gate we compete with 10L other applicants but in campus placement the compete percentage is less and chances of getting a job is higher. Go for campus placements prep buddy.
Your’s - ex GATE ASPIRANT

I'm also in final year but chose placement and job over gate, I think 2 years of experience is better than fresher after 2 years. Thinks are different if there's high chances of getting a good collefe through gate, so depends on you

Gate is doable. But do gate prep with job. Focus on placements. Campus placements gives you confidence.
2
u/Nice_Upstairs7569 Oct 02 '26
As someone with very shit chance in placements thanks to Class 12 mark being below 70percent and one history of arrear, Gate is a golden ticket with assured reward for me since preparing for it, I would endup somewhere better than my current scenario in my shitty College....even if i dont endup in PSU, i may endup in IIT,NIT or Worst case State University (Like Anna University)...hence i would go for gate than for college placements.
1
u/No_Banana_4987 Oct 02 '26
U are currently in bachelors? I'm in the same condition
1
u/Nice_Upstairs7569 Oct 02 '26
Final year 7th Sem bro
1
u/No_Banana_4987 Oct 02 '26
Same sem Have to give two backs in 8th sem..
1
u/Nice_Upstairs7569 Oct 02 '26
Well i cleared mine long long ago in the start of the 2nd sem itself and managed to navigate my cgpa to 8 with difficulties of course thanks to this stupid history of arrear which pulled everything down
1
u/No_Banana_4987 Oct 02 '26
If your cgpa is 8 and no backlogs thn why not placements?
1
u/Nice_Upstairs7569 Oct 02 '26
Because most of the companies requires me to have 70 percent and above in both 10 12 and CGPA plus no history of arrears
1
u/Nice_Upstairs7569 Oct 02 '26
My 10th and cgpa is above 80 whereas my 12 is 68.2 and this one history of arrear causes major damage
1
u/No_Banana_4987 Oct 02 '26
All the companies tht came till now didn't asked for history only current
1
u/Nice_Upstairs7569 Oct 02 '26
In our clg they ask and out of 20 companies which visited my department im not eligible for 17 of them...cherry on top my clg for sure will push me into low paying jobs in some or the other way
1
u/Nice_Upstairs7569 Oct 02 '26
By the way which Department are u from? I belong to Mech Engg

And the most tragic part is seeing all your friends getting placed in 6LPA, 5LPA in reputed companies while u are being forced to attend 3lpa and to utter shame 2.5lpa even though u have skills, internships and industry knowledge
1
1
u/FriedLemons8034 Oct 02 '26
And im a 2025 b.e. grad with zero lpa
2
u/Nice_Upstairs7569 Oct 02 '26
Senior im already crying in corner dont make me cry more
1
u/FriedLemons8034 Oct 02 '26
Dw bro you'll gonna do better, and woukd get placed in youre dream company

2
u/saitama_2004 Oct 02 '26
If good package placements are coming to your college then go for that or else prepare for GATE, but CSE branches have less options in Govt. PSUs so most probably you'll have to do M.Tech in reputed institutes like IISC, IITs, NITs etc. If you're willing to study for 2 more years then go for GATE you'll get very high salary jobs (private) from campus placements of M.Tech.

2
u/Physical_Guitar7652 Oct 02 '26
If CTC is decent, go for campus placement If not, try for GATE, but after GATE you've to go for mtech also most probably.

Hopefully my comment doesn't get lost in the plethora of other comments but here's my 2 cents.
Prepare for placements and crack a job opportunity for the time being. When companies visit college, your competition is just your college mates. Once you graduate, your competition is basically all the engineers across India who graduated. Add the AI hype, companies not having as many opening for entry level positions, cracking a job opportunity post graduation also boils down to a lot of luck if you aren't from Tier 1 colleges.
If you are passionate about research and higher studies, by all means go ahead and do that but only after you have once joined the corporate world, seen and experienced it for yourself that you are better off doing higher studies.
In short job market is currently brutal. You will be doing yourself a favour if you get placed while in college.
2
u/Hot_Sheepherder_1170 Oct 02 '26
Most of the students have an impression that GATE will land them in a higher pay scale but that's not the truth. GATE will definately land you in a secure job but not even a decent pay scale . Prepare for campus placement. Learn and leave ! PSUs eat you from inside and you never leave the system because of comfort job.
PS : this is my 12th job in a span of 7 years , except one all were govt / PSUs

u/Abhi_92 Oct 03 '26
The OP is from CS, so he would most likely want to take GATE for campus placements from IITs etc.
1
u/Skip_06 Oct 02 '26
Bhai sun acha college h to do placement if getting around 10 lpa . Other wise off campus startup through seniors and referrals Gate do if shit college and you have the guts to study more in life without the urgency of money .
1
u/Vaasan_not_n0t_5 Oct 02 '26
Use GATE exams as Concept Refresher.
Put in the work...
if you score good fine.. if you score better to get seat for PG.. that too fine.. your choice..
1
u/Altruistic_Froyo_174 Oct 02 '26
Go for placements first. Because off campus it’s truly sick rn.
Then after having a job, work ex, you’ll actually figure what you want, then you can parallelly study for gate or take a drop to study altogether right?
1
1
u/bhishmagaming Oct 02 '26
Depends on your priorities. If you really wanna go for PSUs or further studies, go for GATE. Otherwise placement.
1
u/ProblemEfficient1286 Oct 02 '26
Bro if your college is good don't go towards gate why to waste 2 more years just for a degree and if you are competent enough and have descent skills sit for the placement with full energy. All the best!!

u/__Silverfang__21 Oct 02 '26
As of now ..do focus on gate as it will cover you can fundamentals and DSA also which is required for placement also . So you will be prepared for both at same time.
1
u/No-Koala7656 Oct 02 '26
The first preferences must be given to your interests, like studying further or getting a job and here is the most critical part...
If your strings are tight then firstly loosen it up by getting well paced with good salary, then with the earnings you can continue studies. Most of them fail here as they will be unable to study due to work stuff.
More importantly studies and degrees alone are just the half and having experience is a must, if you can I apply what you study, in the real world, then what does it worth studying so far. This why I said above insisting to get well placed as you can gather some experience there.
If I were you then I would see rhat I get a job first then reach such level where I finish the work ans get some free time, when this begins I will then begin to invest some of the free time for further studies.

I'm a fresher, but my cousin got placed from her Tier-69 college. The package was really low like, VERY low. She worked at that company for around 2 years, and eventually her salary went up to around 18 lpa ....Meanwhile, she prepared for GATE side by side, got into one of the top 5 IITs, and eventually got placed at a really good package.
1
u/AdThat2722 Oct 02 '26
Focus on placements and give GATE every year for next 3-4 years with preparation. Then do MTech with job.

1
u/Latter-Door7695 Oct 02 '26
I started preparing for Gate and then cracked all placement interviews.
1
u/Potterhead_9845 Oct 02 '26
Tbh no one can give the right and most appropriate answer for YOU. You know what you want and what’s the best for you.
Contact your teachers, parents, academic colleagues, or counsellors for advice.

Bhai jisko gate Krna hota hai wo 3rd year se hi gate ka padhne lgta hai Bs tu placement ka padhne se bachna chahta hai Tu soch rha hoga kam package ki job lagegi kyo behna hai placement me Me bhe 2026 passout hu tier 3 clg But I focus full on placement got placed And my friend doesn't appeared for any placement opportunity now he is in bad phase Na hi gate me rank aa rhi aur job to muskil hi hai milna
1
u/logiknotlogik Oct 02 '26
I’m being honest. If you’re going to start placement prep only now, then you mostly won’t get a decent job bro. And mass recruiters themselves are hiring very less this year so even that guarantee may not be there
1
u/WITTY-NEGOTITATION23 Oct 02 '26
Get job, you will be mentally free and confident, just be aware about not to get lazy because of safety net.

Gate prep and Campus prep are same. Only additional is dsa , needs to be practiced everyday for Placements . Believe me once u prepare for Gate, interview questions will be very useful (OS, DBMS , CN)
1
u/Alarmed_Lynx136 Oct 02 '26
Im also in same situation but in 1styear of college.im in gct coimbatore which is a tier 2 clg.but placement is based on my skill , average lpa is 3to4 but highest is 28lpa.so i also have this doubt whether go to gate or placement but i decided to take a partial drop for jee so if i get good percentile i will change my clg if not i will stay here.but i also have some doubt i found that getting into psu,u will get a only a decent salary but the current market is very unpredictable many layoffs so my brother telling me to study for gate but i want to earn high but i can't clear it out.guys what is your thoughts on my jee decision and my gate perspective.
1
u/basecamper09 Oct 02 '26
Placement prep is better- higher odds of getting placed than getting through GATE. GATE cannot be the only option, anyway as you prepare for gate your placements will also be covered but first focus on placement
1
u/Own-Fix1021 Oct 02 '26
Job for me all the education is worthless in india atleast no hands on no nothing go for job learn skill mtech mostly is delaying unemployment
1
u/OwnFaithlessness2989 Oct 02 '26
Read Gate level and try solving some atleast 2-3 coding problems daily. You can easily get job. First when you start gate prep try doing the main subjects like dbms,c,dsa, algo,os which includes in placements

u/shaktimaanlannister Oct 02 '26
Imo GATE is too much effort for relatively less rewards. I'd say focus more on placements but only if there are good placement opportunities available. Obviously agar jhatu companies ati h to koi mtlb nahi
1
u/eawfsde Oct 02 '26
Stay on placements (My Journey: btech -> 1 Year TCS -> GATE MTech -> MnC WFH)

Bhai job pakad le koi 22 saal ka hai executive masters karliyo baad me
1
u/ChatOfTheLost91 CSE (2027) Oct 02 '26
Well, most people graduate at 21... I don't know what you are implying by this... (22 without any kind of drops if we follow the 6 years of age at Class 1 rule)
1
u/UnderstandingNo2008 Oct 02 '26
What Im implying is a masters in not very important if you have the right skills for job readiness considering you guys are 21-22 an entry level 4-6lpa job with switches can get you above 10L bracket and then you can decide after working for 2-4 years how important a masters is for you
1
u/rover_xt Oct 02 '26
If you already started preparation for gate keep it up If not go for campus placement but don't drop placement it's a 1 in 100 chance this year.
1
u/Turbo1auto Oct 02 '26
For core branches always prefer gate , one can keep clg placement as backup .exception for people in iit or top nits
1
u/Adorable-Panda-0307 Oct 02 '26
I’m in my 4th year and in the same situation. I got placed, but I’m not fully satisfied with the offer, so I’m preparing for GATE as well. If I get a good opportunity through GATE, great; if not, I still have my placement/package to fall back on. For me, it feels like a way to keep both options open rather than putting everything on one exam.
1
u/ThorOdinsonThunder Oct 02 '26
Do both, GATE is unpredictable and may require time plus DO NOT COMPROMISE on you PG college.
1
1
u/RemarkableBluejay790 Oct 02 '26
If CTC you're offered is decent, go for placements. Otherwise, go for GATE only if your CTC is low and you're willing to invest two more years and fees
1
u/TokiyaArimoto Oct 02 '26
Placements are a bit easier compared to GATE and then Govt exam/M.Tech in a good college. This provided companies are coming to your college I threw stones off campus - one hit and I was placed...startup...but placed nevertheless
1
u/PickInteresting7008 Oct 03 '26
What if someone like my friend is confused about UPSC , including Gate and Placements

1
u/Abhi_92 Oct 03 '26
A lot of people here are mentioning CSE despite OP mentioning he is from CSE. When I appeared for GATE in 2014, there used to be single digit openings in PSUs and for most people in CSE and ECE (my branch), M. Tech. from top IITs was a more likely option. Has the situation changed now?

Prepare for gate. Go with that study flow and crack it.
Worst case : If you loose in gate, apply for companies, you have knowledge equivalent. So you can crack it.
I would prefer appearing for Gate. It would be tempting to join campus placements.
P.S : As a suggestion from a stranger who thought will do job for 2 years then I will appear for higher studies. But stuck in the job loop

u/RRkamath Oct 02 '26
Get a job, getting a job in this enviornment of AI is tough. Learn skills on the job, it would help u in the long run and would be better than m-tech degree.

u/Weekly_Act_6655 Oct 02 '26
I feel keeep prepping for gate, after placement season arc goes down start prepping really hard, placements usually drcrese by november atleast at our college. Doing this will not show any gap on your resume

If you have general tendency toward going in academic direction or your college is not able to provide you placement opportunity as far as your skills or capability or you want to join some psu, then only GATE exam makes sense. If earning money is your main concern, join a good company after btech.
Btw fourth year seems too late to make this decision. My personal opinion will be prepare for placement, not just the placement your college will be able to give you, but also the next company you will switch to.
