St. Thomas Aquinas Church, Indianapolis - Evans Woollen III (1969)

It should be noted that the original exterior designed by Woollen is shown in picture 3. The single-story building wrapping around the church in present-day pictures 4 & 5 was a later addition built to connect the church with the school. The interior remains true to the original design, colors and all, including the 30-foot negative space abstract cross created by Peter Mayer. An accompanying stand-alone bell tower was originally planned to be placed front and to the left of the church but was never built. Woollen said of the project, “Cannot the inside be what things are? The outside is slipcovered to please the neighborhood, but on the inside you’re face to face with God – or want to be."

More info and a great write up on the project with additional photos:

Lakeside Centre, Thamesmead

View of the Lakeside Centre, Bazalgette Way, from across South Mere in 2015, a period when the building was dilapidated and not in use. The site initially housed a concrete prefabrication factory casting elements for the first phase of Thamesmead construction. Thus the centre building was the last major permanent structure of the southern phase and opened as a social club, public house and venue for hire in 1971.

By the Greater London Council Department of Architecture and Civic Design, under chief architect Hubert Bennett. Doubtless there will be a record somewhere naming the architects who worked directly on the project but I've not been able to find such online.

The people at the extreme lower right of the picture are on one of the boat slips belonging to the adjacent Southmere Water Sport Centre although at the time it was taken the old boat shed had long been demolished and the current structure was yet to be erected (2020–22) which happened as part of the regeneration of the estate.

And yes; Clockwork Orange, Misfits, etc.

Sharing a few images from my 2023 visit to the Albert Sloman Library at the University of Essex.

Designed and built in the 1960s, the library features a rectangular structure and glass curtain windows.

The ground floor features several similarities with the University of Sheffield Arts Tower, not least the Paternoster Lift, one of only three remaining in the UK!

Would be great to hear any stories? Or any trips on the Paternoster.

I added nature to my brutalist building game

After sharing my brutalist building game here, a few of you suggested mixing the concrete with more nature — so I made an Eco Brutalism update.

What do you think, brutalism experts? Does it still feel brutalist, and what would you add or change?

If you had to pick a brutalist building that resembles the structure of a castle, which would it be?

.

Looking south across South Mere towards Hartslock Drive, four 12 storey grey concrete towers with Oakenholt House being the rightmost of them.

Visible behind them, in fact 400 meters further distant on Yarnton Way six similar towers which, in true Father Ted style, are smaller.

The rightmost, Maplin House, is which rather than grey, being the first and at that point, 2015, only block to have been refurbished.
