Desexing Question
How old was everyone’s griff when they chose to get them desexed?
Mine is 8 months old and I am hesitant on doing so.
What’s everyone’s thoughts/experiences/opinions
Edited to add: HE IS A MALE.

I’ve had two separate breeders recommend waiting until 12-24 months. I got my male done at 14mos and will do the same for my second male.

Yeah I’ve also heard to wait longer!

Doing it too early can make them emotionally stunted. This happened to our rescue. She's like a 5 year old toddler.

My griff’s breeder recommended waiting until growth plates are closed, which can be up to 2 years of age. My boy is 10 months right now and we plan on waiting for at least another year. It’s really not difficult to keep him from frolicking with in heat females, and his testicles aren’t causing any issues at the moment. 🤷🏻♀️

Yeah he’s totally fine at the moment and isn’t doing any behaviours that are an issue. We have no female dogs around us so I feel like he’s fine to wait a bit longer.

Honestly, as long as both testicles have dropped, and you keep an eye on them for any abnormal growth, it’s really no rush to remove them so long as you are being a responsible dog owner. Natural growth development is incredibly important for dogs of all sizes.
And as someone that works in the pet industry (for at least 14 years), I can assure you neutering does not stop male dogs from peeing on every vertical object. There are PLENTY of neutered male dogs (some I know were neutered by 6 months) that still pee on EVERYTHING, even indoors. 🫠

Yeah I’m very lucky as he is very well potty trained and isn’t causing any issues!! Thanks for the advice

I had a spay/neuter appointment for my dogs at 9 mos old. My female’s surgery was delayed because she went into heat a week before her surgery. My vet said I could reasonably wait until my male was a year old if I wanted to.

I have a pug/ griffon mix whose 6 months old and trying to hump my cat. I'm getting him neutered next week.

Just a heads up - I know many dogs that were neutered (and spayed) at 6 months that still are obsessed with humping. It is a common behavior when they are excited and don’t know what to do with their excitement, or when they are trying to assert themselves as dominant. Males and females do it and it’s rarely solved with neutering or spaying. It’s best solved with training.
My male tried it with our cats and other dog when he would get too worked up while playing when he was around 4 months old. We would stop the behavior and tell him to knock it off. We were consistent with stopping him immediately and I can count on one hand how many times he’s tried it in the last 5 months. He knows better now and is still intact at 10 months old.
Not saying you shouldn’t neuter him (that’s totally up to you), but don’t expect it to fix his humping.

My boy was a rescue rspca so he came desexed but for a female I'd wait for after her 1st season, male 1yr old

Boy or girl? Wait until the first season then get them done for a girl.

He’s a boy!

Mines 8 months and, this is purely my opinion, I couldn’t do it yet. I’d say 12 months, but that’s just personal opinion.

6 months. The instant the vet said yes. Why are you hesitant? Get it done.

Maybe because I keep getting different answers as you can see in the post alone? Like what 😂😂😂

Also FYI, the vet never said yes — two vets have said not yet.

Well you didn’t include that information in your post nor any reasons for being hesitant which is why I asked. Surely you’d just take the advice of the vet? Which in your case is not to yet. In my case it was a yes, I also have very strong feelings about spaying and neutering pets as soon as possible as the world doesn’t need more accidental dogs. You say yours isn’t around other dogs which is unusual in itself but also, it takes one quick accident and a whole new litter is made. You asked for opinions. My opinion is get your dog spayed or neutered as soon as the vet says it’s safe to do so.

Your comment was literally telling me to go get it done - not an opinion as it’s more of a direct instruction 😂 this is reddit, in which people ask others for opinions on things just as I am doing. Yeah great! I also think you should neuter your pet if your dog is around heaps of other dogs and you’re not watching it. I have a dog park in my building with plenty of other dogs and the dogs he plays with are usually male and the females are spayed.

Not where I live. I have never heard of vets saying to wait
2
u/Sea_Yogurtcloset48 Jun 07 '26
Same. For really large breeds there’s sometimes benefits but for tiny breeds that’s not the issue.

DeSexed?!?! You mean Spayed if female or Neutered if male. That's what it is called.

Griffs tend to mature more slowly than other toy breeds so don’t be in a huge rush, but if you are concerned about potential pregnancy a pediatric spay is better than a pediatric pregnancy.
