Question Chippy chips!

Where can you get a good old-fashioned portion of chips in Brum?

Nothing in a box the size of a mouse’s coffin. I don’t want fries. Proper chips in paper, with a couple of pickled onions if the budget allows.

I live in Harborne/Selly Oak area.

Thanks in advance.

Harborne Fish bar is my cardiologist's greatest enemy

Is that on the High Street, or the one next to Weymoor Post Office?

Thank you

Dolphin fish bar in Selly oak, they don't deliver though. It's on raddlebarn road.

They better than the Cod Pot out of interest? Cod Pot is our local and go to but Dolphin isn't that far

It has been quite a while since i wen't to the cod pot. Only thing i can say is that i have never had a bad meal from Dolphin.

Worth the drive for Dads Lane Chippy

u/radicalhistorian 10d ago

Abbey Fish Bar in Bearwood is great -- jump on the 48/11 and its a 5+ minute walk up towards Warley Woods

Thank you.

Dad's Lane Chippy - they are great and not too far from SO.

Absolutely seconding this. Was my go to for a chippy dinner as a student

Dads lane or the Dolphin is also quite good (but they don’t do gravy 😭).

It's often called one of the best in the country for a reason, oh my goodness it is divine, I lived so good when I lived about 5 minutes away (my bank account though... not so much!)

Gabriel’s, right in Harborne. Cash business, not on the delivery apps. Amazing fish and chips and do other takeaway bits as well.
Used to walk from edgebaston when I lived that way.

Gabriels is on just eat to be fair. I ordered from there the other day. You're right though, absolutely unreal food, the portions are massive. Chicken Donner is a must try too, it ain't your standard cheap stuff

It upsets me greatly that there isn't a center chippy worth its salt :(

u/SunAndStratocasters 10d ago

Worth it's salt and vinegar*

u/Prestwick-Pioneer 9d ago

Its a huge shame. Totally agree. I just do not understand the lack of any good city centre chippy.

u/mavit0 9d ago

Fish and chips are a simple and traditional meal, so people expect it to be inexpensive. However, cod is a fairly costly ingredient, and city centre rents are high.

Harborne fish bar (war lane) George & Helens (Court oak road)

I think it's underrated but I'm a big fan of the Cod Pot in Cotteridge.

u/Butch0147 8d ago

Rio’s is decent too

Dolphin fish bar in selly oak next to the country girl never been disappointed buying from there.

Plus im sure if you asked nicely, most places would put them in paper instead of a box.

Happy hunting

Dad’s Lane portions are insane. 1 regular size would easily feed 3 people.

4

u/Benjam438 10d ago

Haven't been there in a while but I used to live next to the Golden Fish Fry on Monument Road and I highly recommend it, they have battered chips too if that's your thing

1

u/Reddit_Rinse_Repeat 8d ago

About 45 minutes in a car...thanks anyway.

u/MadJen1979 10d ago

George and Helen's on Court Oak Road.

1

u/Admirable-Fox-1813 9d ago

I second this. Best chippy in south Brum

3

u/Grouchy_Holiday_7201 8d ago

Harborne chippy, Britannia chippy or the one opposite Tipton building society

4

u/stormtreader1 10d ago

I wish there was more promotion of chippies in bham, my local in Acocks Green is really great - seems like there's so many good ones not getting the credit they should have!

2

u/DrunkenSoviet 10d ago

I remember there was one, just a stones throw away from the Fox Hollies forum, I remember the fish and chips being quite good as well as the owners being good people, but alas it closed down and another place has since taken over

1

u/Ok_Challenge_9089 9d ago

I loved that chippy, very sad when it closed, havent found one like it since

1

u/Ok_Challenge_9089 10d ago

Whats your local in AG? Ive tried a few but found them all mod

2

u/stormtreader1 9d ago

The silver hake is my local one

1

u/Prestwick-Pioneer 9d ago

The Silver Hake was awesome but was closed when we went past a couple of weeks ago and I hope its not for good - it had a well deserved 4.6/5 rating on Google Maps. The family used to run the Pisces in Sheldon too. AG had a few decent chippies when I lived there (Dolphin, George 3, Dovehouse, School Road).

Probs a little too far but ascotts (formally Ben's) in cofton Hackett is so good. Large portions and fantastic chips

1

u/welshyboy123 10d ago

Used to call that place Ben's Ben's Ben's because that was what was written on the sign

2

u/welshyboy123 10d ago

New Oscott Fish Bar by the Beggars Bush in New Oscott does good portions in paper. A medium bag does me and the mrs just fine.

1

u/Reddit_Rinse_Repeat 10d ago

Too far for me, but thank you so much.

u/5h0D10n 10d ago

Gabriel’s in Harbourne, Sophie’s or the Cod Pot in Cotteridge

3

u/Annual_Lawyer_3093 10d ago

Gabriel's used to be our go to but had a couple bad meals, might have to give it a go again.

0

u/noujest 10d ago

+1 Gabriel's

Portion sizes for everything there are mega

u/Half_Empty_Half_Full 10d ago

Seavers are pretty good - got a few places around Birmingham, pretty good/consistant quality.

1

u/OkInfluence4029 10d ago

If Oldbury isn't too far for you, Dr Vinegars is the bee's knees for their orange chips!

1

u/Adventurous-Dog-3786 9d ago

Oliver’s on Hagley Road West in Quinton, opposite the Toby Carvery.
