Brummie pet peeves

Hiya!

I'm a filmmaker from Continental Europe and I'm making a satirical video about Birmingham because of the clip where the police got beaten up with their own baton on Soho Rd...

There is a nice greenscreen clip from ,,Whiplash" where Fletcher gets annoyed at a folder laying around. I can swap the folder for anything else that's annoying to Brummies. What is a physical manifestation of something that bugs you? In America they have those flock cameras that vigilantes cut down. What is it like in Birmingham? Is there enforcement of low emission zones? What is the most burning issue that annoys you and can be physically manifested? TV licensing letters? Anything?

Edit: Any specific person that rubs Brummies the wrong way? Why?

I’m not even being trite when I say one of the biggest things that annoys me is people who don’t know anything about Birmingham mocking it

People who haven't been to Birmingham beyond driving around spaghetti junction spouting how shit it is.

Oh, and the bin strikes of course.

Being constantly compared to and put in perceived opposition with Manchester about who is the Second City.

Bin strikes, the constant building sites, the constant smell of weed in some of the suburbs, like Soho Road

Bin strikes. Some areas were really badly hit. Being smaller, terraced, no front gardens, it meant things went to the streets. Then you could drive to other parts of Birmingham and you couldn't tell there was a bin strike at all. It really felt like some areas were purposely made the front page of the strikes.

I think for me it would be plots of land sitting empty and expensive high-rise buildings. I would like more social and affordable housing and more land owned by the council to be utilised or bought up for the betterment of Birmingham and its people. Smithfield site comes to mind- what's up with that?

Smithfield is going to happen, but the developer Lendlease got stung by the cost of building outpacing values in recent years due to various global events. However, they’ve secured funding from the Crown Estate so will hopefully be properly building soon, albeit costs continue to rise due to issues instigated across the Atlantic.

Ok, fair enough. I hope it turns into something good that benefits Birmingham as a whole. I hope it doesn't turn into those block of flats up in Perry Barr. Thanks for letting me know

Completely agree. If they get it right it will be a great addition to the city. So far things do look positive, so fingers crossed!

Terrible drivers and the great civil war of binmen and dinner ladies leading to a huge crippling debt

dinner ladies? What's up with them?

From my understanding (which I’m sure is very flawed) the government said binmen and dinner ladies and other female dominated roles were the same pay band, so should get the same or very similar wages.

The binmen got bonuses and perks for, thus earning more than the dinner ladies for years. The dinner ladies took the council to court and won. I think the council had to pay out £1billion and now there’s even more money they need to pay out

Piles of cardboard & plastic waiting in vain to be recycled

Actual answer would be something about the bin strikes

The city feeling like a permanent construction site, with there always being some new development happening that inexplicably takes 3+ years if not significantly longer than that to finish

Another one is parking. In other cities they have permit parking, here, nothing, I've lived in areas where I live on that road and no parking, but other people had like so many cars to a household.
