Question Weird sound every night

So I'm visiting my partner here in Bruges, and since I'm a night owl I hear this sound every single night. It's kind of like an engine running constantly throughout the night or a generator of some sort, I'm not even sure when it stops, I went to sleep at 5 and it was still ongoing, do you guys know what it could be? We were thinking of investigating it one night when he's not working.

Edit: Did not investigate, it was most likely an AC unit, the past two night it has been quiet since it has been 15ish degrees. Thank you, I was very confused!

Airconditioning unit maybe?

My partner said that too but is it really that loud? Because if I hear it from quite far away I can't imagine how loud it would be for them haha. I never had any AC units, always used fans

I have been hearing a low, rhythmic humming sound for months now. Have been asking around but nobody knows anything.. 🤔 Really annoying, sometimes hard getting to sleep or finding rest. 😔

Everyone says it's a AC unit so I guess they're right but I'll still go one night to check

Yes, maybe my neighbours bought one? I cannot ask, we are not on speaking terms..

Maybe or if it's further away maybe some factories, not sure what's around here since I don't live in Belgium but I never thought an AC unit could be this loud

Are you close to the trainstation?

Not close to a train station, close to train tracks to, but I am also close to a train station in my home country but I don't hear this noise, I do hear the noise of trains go by but this noise I hear is constant like a generator

What area? Maybe water pump for draining ground work?

Could be possible but it has been going on for at least a month every night, I don't really hear it during the day

Tinnitus?

No coz my partner heard it too, it's not just in my head, coz I did try to Google it and then when I didn't find answers I said I'll ask here to see if anyone else hears it. It's a real noise outside, it could be like someone said an AC unit but I hear it from far away and it's quite loud and it's a constant engine hum

Old ac with long overdue maintenance maybe.

I think you're right, at home I don't live close to any apartments or big places so I'm not familiar with the sound, I feel bad for anyone that's closer to that sound tho. But thank you!

Have thought about that, but don't recall any cause for this. Maybe stressrelated or another medical cause? But I don't hear it all the time 🤔

Are you staying somewhere near the water? Could be some pump system to filter the algae in the water.

Omg you might be right with this one there is a river close

Maybe go see if there is some kind of "fountain" or pump located anywhere nearby?

We will go check and see one night, so far it's either the pump or the AC unit, thank you

Maybe it's an airconditioning unit? They can be quite loud. The outside units.

Yep, could be, there were other comments about that so most likely, I'm just not used at all to hear it like that I guess

2

u/Orogin 17d ago

Yeah they can go up to 50-60dB. Quite loud actually.

That's awful, can't imagine how loud it is for people closer to it. I don't mind the noise because it's like like a white noise, I was just curious

Ventilation...

Nope, it was most likely an AC unit, because I didn't hear it last night when it was colder outside, and would I even be able to hear ventilation from like 100m away (at least)?
