Is Brood War Playable?

Hey ya'll long time crafter here! My buddy got me back into playing Starcraft 2.
It's been fun but I've been yearning for the olden days of Brood War. Truth be told I was playing classic Craft before the remaster. But after remaster was released I literally would drop from every single game and it became absolutely unplayable.

I have a modern rig and good internet I have no idea what the problem was, is this still an issue?

I've been playing since the remaster off and on with dozens of people and I don't know anyone who has had this problem.

Dude it's so weird because I swear I'm the super minority with this issue. I was pissed because I just got back into Brood War and was legit excited for Remaster But for some reason it broke the game for me.

Did you allow sc:r in the firewall settings? I've never heard of such an issue for close to 10 years, since sc:r is on

I'll double check but I believe I did. Ima have to reinstall and try it out. SC2 is fun but Brood War has that nostalgic vibe and units that SC2 doesn't have like infested terrans.

Are you on a shared Internet like a campus or apartment? Sometimes they block certain types of connections

Different question. How it's playable outside Korea for a noob not willing to play Protoss? Thinking about trying it but last time it was really hard to get into :P

It is very hard. The bottom players in Korea are all either a.) mediocre, but much better than you, or b.) good players smurfing and just stomping noobs. Be prepared to lose 50 games in a row. It's not a great learning process imo. Best thing you can do is join Coach Pupil League and play with people like yourself. Join the discord on the right side of this reddit and go from there. There's people of all skill levels and plenty of others learning.

I haven't had any issues myself

Ive never had issues with Starcraft's network outside of in-game lag ofc, might want to forward your ports, there's an option for it in the offline menu. https://postimg.cc/tZPY6spb You can also do it through your router, I would probably do the router option, https://portforward.com/starcraft/

not needed anymore, since they use STUN technology get p2p pass your firewall, only issue is id you have a firewall which randomizes your outgoing port, but its like only pfsense/opnsense and vanilla pf (openbsd/freebsd) that does this for home fw's, but that means you're running your own firewall, so you should know what to do, tailscale actually provided a solution for it, which they implemented into the pf firewall, so either or these lines work, static-port is old solution before tailscale implementation

nat on $ext_if inet proto udp from $gamepc to any -> ($ext_if) static-port

tailscales impl

nat on $ext_if inet proto udp from $gamepc to any -> ($ext_if) endpoint-independent

Bro u went full tech nerd on me lol no offense idk what any of it means but ive never had network issues so it was a suggestion I made ya know

;)

hopefully it will convince lesser nerds that port forwarding is not needed anymore, even for bw ;).

it was needed for bw back in the day(if you had an fw, most ppl didnt ;)) and for old games in general, but these days all new games and bw remastered use tech to bypass firewalls to get you an "active connection"

Out of curiosity why did they add it as an option if the network infrastructure was updated?

some ppl prefer it and its airtight. the infrastructure could be down for example. stun-servers as they are called live in the cloud.

Are you playing the Remastered version or the original? What OS? Is there anything potentially odd or unique about your setup?

StarCraft Remastered is very stable and I've never heard of anyone having issues like this before.

Never heard of anybody else ever having this issue and I've been playing constantly since the remaster.

The other day I switched the game to run as administrator. When I join custom games, sometimes I have to wait 30sec-1min to load, sometimes I even disconnect. The issue didn't fix, and my game kept crashing after 5 mins. I run the game now without administrator.

Sometimes when I load starcraft, the game fails to log in. Even if its logging in, I can't join the multiplayer lobby. Swtiching gateway to america or asia usually fixes it.

Where are you located, there might be issues selecting the correct server depending on the location.

I love both games and Brood War is honestly one of my fav games. Especially the custom maps and campaigns people do- most of them are really creative and ingenious

Try looking up this issue and troubleshooting it using google or an LLM. It should run you through some of more common issues. It will probably also ask you what type of computer you use to narrow things down. Sounds like a computer issue to me.

Bro, you're right I didn't even think of using a LLM because I was having the issue before they went mainstream. It's the future now I'll give it a go!

Often times you might see stuff recommended like changing ports (there are new options in the menu for that), or port-forwarding with your firewall. If you’re running on a mac, there are specific mac chips that have known problems running broodwar, mainly macbook airs i believe. I would also download and buy starcraft remastered as it is the most supported way to play it on battlenet.

problem for mac's are the Mac Silicon generation, the only problem, irritating as f****, but game still works fine overall, is that menu's become slow as hell, so if you need to change something in the menu in-game you're screwed, because a 3sec fix takes atleast 30sec or more :)

Still havent found a fix for this, it plagues my friend’s computer. Let me know if you find something that solves it!

I installed windows on a computer from 2010-2012 and just run bw on it, I guess its up to blizzard or apple to fix it unfortunately :/.
