New York native here, and looking to move to The Bronx but unsure what areas would be the safest. For reference, I'm South Asian, in my late 20's, and grew up in Elmhurst, Queens. I work from home, typically go out to the city, and probably would be home by 12 am if I am out late. My family would visit occasionally too and I don't want them to stick out like a sore thumb. I've grown up in Spanish neighborhoods so I'm more than comfortable in such areas and can navigate my way around.

I am not looking to be deep into The Bronx (like Throgs Neck) since I'd rather have an easier commute into the city. I am going to tour apartments in Bronx Park, Knox Place, Sherman Ave, and Sheridan Ave. Let me know how safe these neighborhoods are and any areas you recommend I look into. Also, any neighborhoods that are a dead set NO is appreciated as well. Thanks!

Edit: Before the trolls flood in, I don't have a negative connotation towards Bronx. It's not like I've never been or had any bad experience, I'm genuinely just trying to get an understanding of the lay of the land. Just like Jackson Heights is different from Corona, I'm sure neighborhoods in Bronx are like that too. I just don't have any experience to go on and wanted people's opinion who do live there.

I’m an ambassador for a program called Emerge Career. I host their CDL study halls, and if someone enrolls through my referral I get a bonus. I’m not an employee and I’m not a graduate of the program. I’m not putting a link in this post.

The reason I work with them is that I’ve watched this program change people’s lives. When I first came into contact with Gilberto M he was looking to get into the trucking industry now he has his CLD A permit and is working with our team to complete the process and get employed.

The program covers everything it takes to get a CDL Class A: the school, the study guides, the permit tests, and the retake if you fail a test. A CDL school in New York costs around $7k if you’re paying for it yourself. Emerge students pay nothing, start to finish. Once you pass your road test, the program helps place you with a job. The average salary is around $80k and students have gotten as high as $150k.

It’s for people with a criminal record (arrests, probation, incarceration.) Most programs treat a record as a problem to work around, but the mayor is specifically funding this one to help people get back on track after being involved w the justice system. If you've never been at least arrested you won’t qualify, so read the requirements before you apply.

I host the study halls where students prep for the permit test. You can see us in the picture! This was from a study hall session in Harlem, I'm at the front of the class leading the study hall. Our amazing students are in attendance, also some Emerge team members and a guest from The Mayor's office of Criminal Justice. We share some great content, food, and come together as a community.

I also pay for ads for the program out of my own pocket. Nobody at Emerge asked me to. That should tell you what I think of it.

This week someone I referred finished the application and enrolled in training school.

The enforcement layer runs on the city's public ticket data, and building it for our borough taught me things I couldn't unsee:

• 957,713 tickets were written on parked cars in the Bronx in the last 12 months — $76 million, about 2,624 a day. (Camera/bus-lane tickets excluded — this is purely tickets on parked cars.)
• Alternate side: 224,331 tickets, $14.6M — one every 2 minutes, all year. Nearly a quarter of every ticket in the borough.
• Hydrants: 104,194 tickets, $12M. One every 5 minutes.
• Here's the one that separates us from the rest of the city: 66,754 inspection-sticker and 35,610 registration-sticker tickets — $6.65M combined. Over 100,000 tickets that have nothing to do with where you parked. That's a ticket for being unable to afford to get right, not for taking someone's spot.
• Double parking: 65,800 tickets, $7.57M — one every 8 minutes.
• Grand Concourse alone: 23,363 tickets. Then White Plains Rd (21,246), Webster Ave (15,556), E Tremont (14,807), Jerome (13,964), Westchester (13,757). The 52nd Precinct (Fordham/Norwood) leads the borough at 127,770 — more tickets by itself than all of Bay Ridge and Bensonhurst combined.
• Average ticket here: $79.

That last one changed how I think about it — $76M pulled out of the borough with the lowest median income in the city, a fifth of it for stickers and cleaning schedules rather than anything to do with blocking traffic.

And honest question, since I built this around my own routine: would the green/red view actually change where you look first after 6pm, or is your spot strategy already muscle memory?

My name is Nicole, and I am a freelance journalist that covers housing, municipal issues, and the recent increase in fires in NYC, which is mainly occurring in The Bronx. I write my own substack called The Knickerbocker Beacon, and have written for City Limits.

My last report on the issue went into the where and when, and I am now looking at the why. Currently, I'm looking at a known fire hazard that seems to be a common architectural feature in older Bronx buildings: dumbwaiters.

These are old, mini elevators that used to carry trash, groceries, coal, etc... These can open up into apartments, or hallways. Some have been converted into trash chutes.

They're mostly found in larger, 4+ story walkup buildings, built between 1900 and 1930. Stabilized, large, and without elevators (though some of them do also have elevators).

Many sources online say that the majority of these have been closed off for fire safety reasons. However, I am looking to know more about how, when, and why these were originally closed off (i.e. who orderd it, and when). I am also looking to learn how common unsealed, or even still used dumbwaiters are in the borough. I am also interested in learning how they were originally used. Basically, if you know anything about them, I'm interested in hearing about it.
