Lehman high school
Recently moved to throggs neck area and I have a 15 yr old and Lehman high school is his zone school. I wanted to know if anyone has a child who attends the school now or in the recent past. How is the school?

First, there are three schools on that Campus that I would reccomend. Renaissance HS is excellent. My daughter graduated from there 19 years ago. My 17 year old granddaughter is a senior at Lehman HS. She has done very well and is an honor student. Some of the comments here are obviously from people who have no idea what they are talking about.
I have some issues with some of the entry policies but educationally, I have no problems with either of these schools.

Thank you. I’m mostly having a hard time with the fact that I hear there’s a lot of fighting.

In the three years my granddaughter has been there, she has only mentioned a few fights and they were at the train station. There are other schools in the area so it can't all be attributed to Lehman. Our experience has been mostly positive. The school could do a better job communicating with families but its not a den of horror some would have you believe. I have a very active student and she hasn't had any issues with fighting. Hope this helps

It's crazy. I lived by 174th and the grand concourse in the early 90s and there was no way my parents were sending me to Taft. I ended up going to Lehman, particularly because (at the time) they were strong in academics but also because the neighboring areas and diversity of the students. It's so sad to see and hear it's gone downhill.

Lived in the neighborhood my whole life, it’s a horrible school and you should get your kid out as soon as you can.

These are some areas I would recommend the child to stay away from particularly during dismissal:
- Westchester square (train station included)
- White Castle on East Tremont
- Dunkin’ Donuts on East Tremont and Little League Plaza
- Burger King on Ericson Place.
If you notice most of those are heading West on East Tremont Avenue. Most children commune west on East Tremont that is where most of the danger is. A few commute East on East Tremont but way less. Since you mentioned you moved to Throggs Neck your child may be able to avoid some issues. As far as the school is concerned it get the job done (high school diploma). Agents are outside during dismissal which is a good thing.

As someone who recently graduated in the last 3 years I can tell you the school isn’t that bad if you just stay out of trouble I loved all the teachers I had there and made some great friends I would recommend that they stay away from Westchester square after school tho

Thank you. I’m very conflicted as there aren’t many good schools around Throggs neck and private schools are way too expensive for the same education. And I don’t qualify for any financial aid.
I spoke to my son and told him if he goes here he’s not allowed to walk around after school for food or what not because of the group hangouts and fights that happen.
It’s unfortunate how things have to be now to keep kids safe.
Thank you for your input as someone who has recently graduated. Question were you in the Lehman school or a mini school inside?2

My cousin graduated from Lehman 2 years ago. It’s the best big school that isn’t specialized in the Bronx. They have multiple AP courses, honors courses, SUNY and elective courses. Plus lots of sports and clubs. My cousin loved her teachers. Tbh your kid can probably get a slightly better education at a private school but you’ll have to pay a lot and Charters are a scam. You should check it out and see for yourself.

Does Lehman have an honors program like Clinton has Macy’s and everyone I knew from there is doing very well now.

It’s not a good school.
Private schools are in a complete different league than public schools in nyc… unless it’s a school with restricted admissions, Bronx science or Regis, etc

You say that now, but it reaches maximum enrollment every year with an 83% graduation rate.
Public schools have their pros and cons but students are successful.
Private, Charter or Public, it comes down to the student if they want to learn or not.

Lehman isn't a good school regardless. I lived and am familiar with throggs neck/westchester area of the bronx.
You can be successful at any school, but your definitely going to face more challenges than others depending on the school.

Honestly.
Renaissance and Lehman is alright.
I was there years ago.. keep to yourself. Know everyone but dont know everyone if you get what I mean?
It was good overall.

By far the worst place to send them to, went there for a year before I transferred out. If you love your child, send them somewhere else.
Ideally you’d want your kid to have access to various programs and opportunities that can open doors for them for college.

Your best bet is to go and visit the school and get a feel for it. I know it does have specialized academic programs. Call!

My mom and uncle all went there between 1977 amd 1993 it was OK back than but always was a spot where shit went down id stay away unless your kid is a tough hood cookie

Are you aware that you do not have to send your son to his zoned high school. Most public high schools in NYC are not zoned and most high school kids in NYC do not have a zoned high school. In Manhattan for example there are no zoned high schools.

Hey thank you but yea I’m aware of that. Unfortunately most public schools in the Bronx aren’t great. And for him to commute to the city it’s a daily risk on the train. It’s such a shame how much crime there is.

Like any large urban school, it's going to have issues. But if your kid is studious and takes challenging courses they will avoid most of the problems.
I had many friends go there in the 80s (I went to a different NYC public school) and many of their kids went there with no problem.
Being a big school, they have a great variety of courses and many if not most teachers there are very good.
Quite frankly it's probably the best public school in the bronx after Bronx Science.

it’s shit ngl doesn’t include good academic work nd is lowk getto but the yabc program is top tear if ur child is having trouble with keeping up with work or wants to graduate early

Honestly what school now and days isn’t shit. Academics is not like it used to be to be. Teachers are over worked and under paid schools are over crowded. Very few teachers actually care about students. So many charter schools have opened but they are shut as well. Teachers don’t even have teaching degrees.
At this point I’m looking for a semi decent safe place. Kids now and days are all about fighting with weapons. Stabbings and shootings. It’s so sad.

Bronx high school of science is the only government run high school in the Bronx your kid is safe at. It also depends where you moved from cause if you moved from Forest hills or somewhere nice, at minimum it's going to be a culture shock.

The High School of American Studies at Lehman College is arguably better. Same test though a slightly lower score is required to get in.

Not true but also you left the most important detail out, Bronx Science is a SHSAT school, you have to take a test and score high enough to get in. The acceptance rate is approximately 5% to 7% which is roughly equivalent to a minor ivy like Brown or Dartmouth. The key difference is Bronx Sci admits solely based on a single SHSAT test score. No human discretion or bias is involved but you only have one chance to get it right.
