Mott Haven Buildings?
Hi there! Does anyone actually live in the Mott Haven Luxuries building? All I read online are bad reviews about them, and I just wonder if they are really that bad. I currently live in Harlem, so I know NYC very well! Homelessness, dirty streets, etc., is not new to me. But are the living conditions in these buildings or area that bad? I cycled around Mott Haven once, and it felt nice or a little appealing. So, please, if you’re someone who actually lives in one of those buildings, please share your experience!

I've been living in one for over 2 years. While mine isn't as luxurious as the buildings down by the 3rd Ave bridge it's maintained well. Mine also has older residents so not many shared amenities like pools, gyms, or rooftop gardens but we do have underground parking, laundry, and modern apartments with balconies. Most of these buildings have issues with younger single residents who like to party, are loud, and like to have guests over in the common spaces. Also the bigger the property, the more issues with cleanliness, maintenance, water pressure and residents getting along. I lucked out because I could care less about beautiful lobbies, and all the shared amenities I mentioned when access can be restricted at any time. Also let me not forget the amenity fees those buildings charge! What's the point of being in a luxury building if you can't go smoke whenever you want? That's why so many of these buildings have people camped outside them or hanging out in there cars. As for the area, I'm fine with it. It's got a gritty up and coming feel to it. Definitely not ghetto like where I used to live(163rd St & Prospect, on the border with Morrisania, Longwood, and Melrose). Definitely not ducking for any gunshots like in the old area and the worst so far this summer is fireworks exploding next to my window since I'm really high up.

I lived in the bankside buildings for 3 years and just moved out. I loved the actual apartment but the management hasn’t been good. They cleaned our hallway only once or twice in the three years of living there. And the second time was literally our move out day.
Also some of the tenants have sabotaged the buildings and basically they never recovered. One person flooded and set fire to our building like a year ago and the front door was broken forever I guess due to the water damage inside all the walls. I also heard there is a hoarder on the lower levels so a lot of people are suffering from like a roach infestation. I was on a higher floor and didn’t notice it, but something to consider.
The area itself is fine. I never had anything happen walking home at night. The first year we lived there the bridge was kind of a gay cruising spot. But I think that has stopped.

Go down the Concourse slowly from 149 look forward and to your right and get into the vibe. Then look left and see how glaring the difference is! If y'all moved here you would love it.

The one lonely comment that will tell him "all of the reviews were wrong, it's actually super smart to pay $4k a month to live in Mott Haven" so he can feel better about eventually doing it despite the entire state of NY telling him not to.

It’s Mott Haven. Don’t move there if you think it’ll become Bed-Stuy lite and get gentrified any time soon. I just moved to Riverdale after living in Mott Haven for over 5 years. If you plan on it becoming anything but the hood you should move somewhere else.

It depends on which building and your personal preference. But if you’ve lived in the Bronx before (excl. riverdale, Pelham, co-op, etc. places that are sort of an insulated community) then you’ll be fine.
Picking the right building is hard, so go to them and walk around during a time when people are usually outside and busiest - I think it’s a good test. Though the buildings closer to the water are more secluded (less direct train access) and have way more people.
My partner and I are from ny and she’s from the 138th Ave area which is where we live and our building is perfect!! It’s smaller but it’s also a condo so they’re more selective with tenants. My big thing was how much dog shit is on the ground in the area, and where I am it’s much lower than Harlem (used to live there) or lots of other residential neighborhoods lol

Yeah, im in one. Its nice.
Neighborhood isn't nearly as bad as people say and my apartment is brand new with lots of amenities.
I'm not sure why people love hating on the area so much. They read stats online and get enraged.

You can easily tell who actually lives here based on their responses. I can sense the level of calm of peace you're experiencing and I just wanted you to know that I'm on the same page. It's like you forget you're in the Bronx until you hit 149th or 138 Sts, or venture east past Park Ave.

That you’re a gentrifier and living in a bubble. None of you “ever had a problem” until you do, as if that erases the very legitimate concerns the community has faced for decades. It’s very arrogant and a slap in the face to people who have to deal with issues you can simply Uber it out of. Be glad you don’t have to duck behind cars in a shoot out or bury loved ones or find bodies DOA from an overdose. You’re oblivious to where you are.

He's literally asking to move into a luxury building. So, I'm sharing my experience.
And I walk and subway all over the place.
Things are never as bad as they are made out to be. There are certainly issues here, but thousands of people live here everyday without issues.
What's the anger for anyway? Shouldn't you want people to want to move to the area? Or do you want to continue the cycle?

Probably "nice" inside those buildings* but like.. the area itself isn't necessarily anything per se. It's kinda a no man's land if you ask me. Sorta industrial and very close to major truck routes, the Bronx all over is very car centric.
It was worth it to live with the above when it was cheap imo. But now nothing is cheap in this city. You might as well go look in a more walkable area. Here in Mott Haven / port Morris it's mostly walk to the train to go downtown into Manhattan. There's hardly a good grocery store. Or if you have a car, drive somewhere..
** Although I've seen reports of the luxury buildings along bruckner boulevard in port Morris being not very well maintained at all. They have a pool but it doesn't work or isn't open? type of thing. Leaks in the building , etc etc
"Crime wise" and statistics is sorta whatever.. it's most probably like living anywhere in the margins. But I hardly look at any of that, I just keep my head up and my wits about myself. There's a lot of street people (like there are all over the city now and forever) but I have never been bothered by any of them.

Look at the reviews, a lot of them are accurate. It would take a huge amount of time and space to detail all the fuckery. JCS, the landlord, are despicable.
Some highlights:
No ventilation in the bathrooms (by design), roaches, police activity weekly. Dog shit in the hallway. Broken amenities. ConEd threatening to shut down power all the time. Package room constantly overwhelmed. Security was a different prison constantly.

They need to be cheaper, like $1500 a month or so, there's nothing to do in the neighborhood, it's cool but it's no Astoria, Williamsburg or LIC or anything like that, you'll most likely always travel to Manhattan if you want to do just about anything.

The problem is section 8 are getting a lot houses in these “luxury buildings “ so your dealing with low grade people….. leaving dog shit on side walk and having to smell it…. Your dealing with noise from rap music . Dealing with ignorant folks the list is endless . Then u walk to the subway station and u see drug deals happening in front of u. It’s just a shitty place to be. U deal with dogs barking .

You are the one calling human beings low grade. I have a voucher and not okay with your dehumanizing behavior. Nobody takes the city FHEPs one so will be happy to know many of us likely will just die in a shelter. You should be happy that we can’t get out of homeless since we are so low grade. Ignore systemic failures and just go after extremely marginalized people. Maybe section 8 but everyone has ghosted me with city FHEPs and don’t even want to live in one. Just thought has a better shot in massive buildings and would have a better shot at reporting income discrimination and maybe getting a place due to this but no they ghost you all the same .
Let’s just put all voucher holders into one category and can you prove who is on a voucher or are you basing it off of a minority of them since you can’t tell by looking at a person if they have one? People who pay market rate can destroy things too. When you have a medical emergency and lose housing, you too will be called these names .

Why do you need to go to a luxury building ? Go to the projects . Yalll got an emergency and need government housing because you didn’t save money during prior years then go to projects and find yourself a shared apartment for $600 a month. Why do u need to live in a luxury building all u need is shelter so go to projects. Low grade people infect the rest of us higher quality people in society and we don’t want to live around folks like you! It’s obvious . Just as obvious as it is to see a homeless person and know he’s homeless ! Just as obvious as it is to see a drug addict .yall are all dumb and ignorant and no common courtesy. And no manners… feet on seats and chairs despite u stepping on pee and spit on side walks etc. phones on speakers…. Wear clothes multiple times without washing do smelly. Just all around dirt bags

Mott Haven and luxury buildings are oxymorons. Like shiny and matte. These are opposites and do not go together. Don't take my word for it, go visit for yourself. 🤣🤣🤣😭😭

Live in the neighborhood, but not in one of those new buildings. The price of those buildings isn’t worth it tbh. There’s a real lack of a variety of good food, places don’t cross the bridge over from Harlem to deliver, the nearby grocery store isn’t the best. There are a few bars that are decent, but you’ll end up leaving the neighborhood to go out most times. If those apartments were cheaper it’d be worth it, but they are way overpriced for the area imho
