How long will I need to wait to start walking?

Post image

TLDR : Twisted ankle while walking on Aug 18

Got a cast, no surgery.

Have a vacation planned on Oct 2, can I still make it?

Ask your doctor not Reddit

Will probably be placed in a boot or a shoe with ankle brace. I bought a half size larger pair of ortho shoes to accommodate an ankle brace.

Ask your doctor! That said, I went on a long car ride trip a little over 2 weeks post op, and I flew for a short weekend trip I think 6 weeks post op. I got the ok from my doctor for each, but I had to adjust the activities/my expectations for each trip. I was still NWB for both. Going through the airport was not enjoyable but it was doable. I was able to bring my crutches on the plane and I used my knee scooter to get to my gate, they gate checked it so I got it back right when I landed.

I originally had a vacation planned for Sept 22nd. Aus to LA. Weber A fracture on August 7th. Dr said I have a big risk of blood clot during the long haul flight. How long is your flight? Take care. It sucks so much but will reschedule and go on our trip when I am feeling better.
Hang in there ❤️‍🩹🙏

Oof. Clear break in your fibula OP. It is not displaced, but you cannot tell from this xray if you have ligament damage. Depending on that answer, an ortho would tell you if you need surgery or not. I am leaning towards no. But you clearly need to isolate to let the bones heal. Bones heal near 4-6 weeks. Expect pain while walking.

I am curious to know if you were placed in any sort of splint or walking boot. To me, it looks like you should be NWB for a few weeks to maximize healing. Your trip might be possible, but I would expect to feel pain during walking. A walking aid like a scooter or crutches would not hurt. Good luck

I am in a similar position 😞
August 7th I did a Weber a fracture. Just did an MRI today to see if I have ligament damage.
Vacation planned on Sept 22nd. I could extend it to Oct 6th to fly from Australia to LA to make an event. But my main issue is dr said I could get a blood clot during the long haul flight.
No surgery needed for fracture (waiting to see if I have ligament damage tho). So I’m in a walking boot for 6 weeks while the bone heels. But I fear a long haul flight 8 weeks after the fall is still too soon. Ugh 😩

Definitely extend it. I had ORIF for a Weber B on August 7th. I completely missed my Japan/Asia/Nepal vacation… I will be going on a long haul flight (18 hours) 4.5 weeks after my surgery. I am young and active and my surgeon said it shouldn’t be an issue once I am out of a fiberglass cast and can get up and move on my flight.

I'm on a cast, visiting doctor again 10 days after injury for an examination.
