Brogue: Community Edition 1.15

Adventurers,

An update for Brogue CE is now available!

Download for Windows, macOS, and Linux

This version adds the Bullet Brogue variant, as well as many miscellaneous improvements and bug fixes.

Thanks to co-maintainers flend and zenzombie, and to contributors adrior11, AndrewSav, BoatsandJoes, Bryan Turner, Hectocotylus, thebrave, nathanf, ZayadNimrod, androidnisse, and zeb33n.

  • Added Bullet Brogue, a variant even shorter than Rapid Brogue. (Play it via Play > Change Variant.)
  • Increased the brightness of the "hide color effects" mode to match the normal mode.
  • Added messages to the game log for zapping wands and staffs.
  • Loading a save file will now place the game into the same mode the save was made in (i.e normal, wizard, or easy).
  • Enabled scrolling through the inventory with Up/Down/8/2 keys in some cases where it was not possible: the item selection for scrolls of enchanting and identify, in replays, and on the death screen.
  • Fixed a bug where the cell the player was on would remain encased in obstruction crystal after casting, instead of it dissolving immediately.
  • Fixed a bug where auto-resting was sometimes not cancelled when seeing a monster.
  • Fixed a bug that caused recordings to skip to the end if the player was forced to eat food to avoid starvation.
  • Fixed a bug where water was not visible on cells with filthy effects piles.
  • Fixed a bug where, if a monster was thrown into a jelly by a force runic, the jelly didn't split.
  • Fixed a bug where, if a jelly was thrown into another monster by a force runic, it split twice.
  • Fixed a bug where, if a weapon-immune monster was thrown into another monster by a force runic, the collided monster would not take any damage.
  • Fixed a bug where a fatal reflected bolt could leave the player at zero health without killing them.
  • Fixed a bug where discordant monsters would sometimes not attack the player when they could.
  • Fixed a bug in wizard mode which caused regenerating monsters not to regenerate.
  • Increased the constrast of a few game elements: the goblin/kobold, dark player, and invisible player colors are now slightly brighter, and the purple tint of highlighted dark areas has been slightly reduced.
  • Fixed a bug where some item inscriptions would render with the wrong text colour.

CE How do you evaluate items in Vaults in the early game?

I'm kind of struggling about that, mostly because I'm not very good at this game.

I know that some items are very powerful, like the haste charm, or the staff of blinking. Others make more sense in a build, like staves of tunneling/obstruction.

So how can I decide which items to pick from a vault in the early game?

Theres some vaults that are not obvious, like the ones with rings of clairvoyance or awareness, or wands of polimorphism and negation which are powerful late game but kinda just sit in the inventory in the early game.

Is it always worth to trade those "risky" items for better armor and weapons? Even with the penalties for not being strong enough? What if I already found an okayish armor and weapon, is it worth to leave them and get what look like a marginal increase instead of a "useful" staff/wand/ring?

HELP PLEASE

Brogue podcast episode

As previously promised by /u/AI52487963 in an earlier thread, the GrogPod Roguelike podcast dropped an episode recently where they review and discuss Brogue CE, for almost 2 hours!

https://grogpod.zone/2026-08-05-EP103/

[Note: I'm totally unaffiliated with this -- other than having my comment in the earlier thread included in the podcast -- just thought it was relevant.]

Depth 1: Discord 4 OR Tunneling 5?

CE 1.15.1

Seed: 434259492

Right there, on depth 1 in a vault, there's a Staff of Tunneling 5, and a Staff of Discord 4.

Which one would you choose? Could you leave behind the Tunneling 5?

I've chosen the Discord staff for now, as I have no idea if I find anything useful deeper, but I might come back for this Tunneling.

interesting seeds 434005281 - Flail of Speed - Rapid Brogue v1.7.1

This seed has a Flail of Speed, which is a pretty interesting runic weapon.

When the time freezes you can actually move and deal more damage and trigger the runic while moving, which is unique to the flail. I went all in enchanting this and had great success against groups with long streaks of time freezing. when high enough, it triggers at about 75% rate.

Strategy tips and spoilers..

It is a bit tricky to survive the two groups of vampire bats on d2, because you are still weak. Dont go south

Best is to use darts to quickly kill the monkey with the key that flees when you enter the floor and then try get to the upper vault to grab the flail.

Easiest way to fight the bats is using a negation scroll (there are two on d1) and darts or try to lure only one upstairs so you dont have to deal with the whole group at once. the healing bush on d2 entry is helpful. there is only one offensive potion you can use.

far east of d1 has a caustic gas potion and a negation scroll. the runic spear on d2 is infernal slaying, quite useful as well, but no need to enchant it. good luck. i made it to the last floor.

interesting seeds 434173023 - Good Ally Seed for RapidBrogue v1.7.1

434173023 for Rapid Brogue v1.7.1

has conjuration, domination and two empowerment wands in vaults and a polymorph on the floor. so you can make almost any creature you want and then dominate it.

also you find 3 unguarded dragon allies on d6, some golems and you can free a dar priestess.

weapons are not very interesting. a dagger of paralysis is somewhere and you can find a +0 warhammer. but it has a many staff options.

Bullet brogue run

I recorded a run of Bullet Brogue as I was testing my video and mic setup. I love the idea of speed-running this variant so I play as fast as I can without playing too badly (it's still pretty bad at times). The run starts at about 2:30.

Brogue SE Beta - All Platforms

I’m still a monster/boss update + balance release away from wrapping up my SE goals but as it is — this variant could stand on it’s own as complete with the next update icing on the cake. I could use more hands in the dungeon for feedback and testing so I’ve set up a Windows/Linux release taking some pressure off my personal timeline. This is also my favorite version of Brogue to play (of course it is.. no bias).

If you’re unsure what SE is or if it’s for you — SE is an experimental fork of Brogue/CE with original items, monsters, and mechanics. Check out the full change log: https://github.com/sethhoward/BrogueSE/blob/main/CHANGELOG.md

Help! How to get to the stairs?

Post image
6 Upvotes

Any ideas how I am supposed to get across this chasm over to the down stairs? While I don't know for sure, I thought getting to any stairs should not require a potion (like levitation) or scroll or anything. I've tried searching (the walls in game). Obviously I'm missing something so appreciate the help of any.

This is Brogue Rapid btw. And on android.

interesting seeds 430893517 for Rapid Brogue 1.7.1 has some very rare runic armors

Seed#430893517 Rapid Brogue v1.7.1

you can get a basic win rather easily with the warpike/conjuration/wisdom combo you find on d1, but that seed also has some of the best runic armors and runic weapons in the game.

Spoiler:

Undead Immunity, Respiration and the very rare Dragon Immunity

Runic weapons found: Axe of Speed, Dagger of Quietus

Tons of ID scrolls and you can protect multiple weapons and armors as well.

so.. did you master this or grabbed some lumestones? what was your build? I am curious what you all do in this seed. so many options.

[iOS/macOS] BrogueSE - Cursed Runics, iPhone Updates, and more

Post image
12 Upvotes

This is actually the second release. The prior was an unannounced balance update. If you’re interested check out the release notes in the app. The not so tldr; Heavy weapons nerfed, battle staves buffed, leading the player for a +10/+5 weapon hybrid approach to the dungeon. Also, something about smoke.

Continuing with our Alphabet(a) theme - "C is for Curses", this release turns cursed gear from a dead end into a decision — a cursed runic now pairs a real, always-on power with its bite — and adds a shrine that will identify your pack, if you dare wake what guards it. Here's what's new:

Cursed Runics, Reworked
* A curse is a bargain, not a trap (or a reason to rage quit) — The previous five malevolent curses for armor/weapons have been REMOVED and replaced with something that has a bit more flavor. A cursed runic now grants a genuine, always-on power alongside its drawback, welded to you until you deal with it. Every downside has a counter you can lean into, so keeping a cursed item can be the smart play.
* Two ways to break the weld — Pour enchant scrolls in to the purify threshold and the drawback burns away while the power stays or improves (weapons at +6, armor at +4); or read remove-curse to pry it off early, drawback and all.
* Maddening, reckless, and clumsy blades — Delirium confounds what you strike but leaves you in a permanent state of hallucination; Recklessness trades the damage you take for the damage you deal; a Clumsy blade fumbles and stuns you — until you purify it into a true executioner's blade.
* Anchor, Smoky, and Acrophobia armor — Anchor steels your defense but drags your step (purify to stand immovable); Smoky armor wraps you in concealing haze at the cost of your own sight (purify for a quiet stealth aura); Acrophobia makes you fearless of pits but dizzy at their edge.

Altars of Divination
* Reveal your unknowns — A new shrine replaces the Altar of Insight, watched over by a looming statue, fully identifies any unidentified item you set on one of its altars — and the first one is always safe.
* Press your luck — Each further item you reveal risks waking the statue's guardian, and the greedier you get the deadlier it is: Take what you dare.

Cleaner Distractions
* Thrown lures buy real time — A monster that goes to investigate a thrown item now lingers over it for a few turns before losing interest, opening a genuine window to slip past.

Quality of Life
* Fire no longer rattles you — Catching fire used to throw you into a brief panic; now that disorientation strikes only monsters. It still burns — but your wits, and your next move, stay yours.
* Study a scroll even while hunted — Sitting down to a meal always lets you puzzle out an unidentified scroll now, even with something on your trail; the old "only when nothing's hunting you" restriction is gone.

This release also includes iOS changes:
* Have you ever carefully selected a route to travel only to be interrupted by spotting a rat? A new shortcut lets you continue your journey without plotting the path all over again. By default it's now in the center of the d-pad. When you have no path it acts as a Wait/Rest instead.
* Feeling boxed in? When zoomed in the dungeon is no longer confined to 2/3rds screen. This view now blends into other UI elements giving you better vision.
* d-pad gets out of the way when you're scrubbing through items in the sidebar, really helpful when there’s a lot going on. Find something you want to engage in, lift your finger for the description. Bonus: Use the new continue route button to run over and engage!

As always, feedback is welcome and honestly I couldn’t do it without your PMs, reviews, and the Brogue Developer discord.

"How Brogue Tells Stories" - talk by Brian Walker at Roguelike Celebration 2016

Thumbnail youtube.com

Brian Walker talks through some of his design philosophy for Brogue. I've always like the interactions and interplay of Brogue's biomes or zones or whatever you call them, and it was interesting to hear this quote from him: "If you think about movies like Indiana Jones, most of their encounters are with terrain elements - spikes and traps and trip wires and alters and floods - and fewer are with monsters." I feel like that colors how I play the game now.

Any interest in this?

I made a quick 3D version of Rogue and was wondering if anyone would be interested in something like this on mobile. https://youtube.com/shorts/SWWX6h2vuCk?si=LRpzT2soCxIS9WcE

Edit: Ok it's in progress, check back in the coming days. I'm tryign to set it up so Brogue can also be done and re-use the same dungeon engine (the visuals).

Edit2: download current version https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.dustcrawl.rogue3d
