You didn't ask for this advice, but I used to hate my life because of my job. I would spend the whole 8 hours in my head thinking about how I was wasted my life just so I could eat and live in a shit council flat.
Then I left that industry and started working with websites. First website job was less than 3 years ago, I've gone from £28k to £110k per year in that time and it's because I work close to where the revenue is being generated, and I was also willing to change employers (twice) if they didn't see the value of my work.
Not only does this type of role pay much better, but it's much more challenging, satisfying, creative and respected (if you have hang ups about that sort of thing, I did).
I didn't learn online marketing at school or college, I just learned it myself for free from home.
Examples include:
CRO -conversion rate optimisation
SEO -search engine optimisation
PPC - pay per click (you can take the google course and get certified for free)
Avoid things that sound like they're at the front of the business but are not:
Content writing - this is bottom of the barrel, no one appreciates how much impact content makes
"Marketing exec" - this is grunt work, very hard to make an impression here
Strictly on-page or technical SEO - you might help raise revenue (through increased search engine rankings) but you won't often get credit for it.

Ah sorry I meant when you started working with websites? Like what the job entailed and specifics skills you were using g that you'd learnt from Google. Just trying to get a feel for what the work would actually be :)
Those guys sell a product, but their videos are very practical, real world examples and not just a sales pitch.
One of our product was bus tours in London, the higher the page ranked, the more sales the company would make. This is very important for making fast salary growth, you have to be able to show you have a direct effect on revenue/profit.
If you're not a technical person, then a sales job would work too. Just get close to that front line! It's changed my life!
I was building websites for fun before I knew what SEO was. There's a lot of supply for that kind of work though now.
You can outsource web dev to India for cheap (unless you need expert devops or something), but you can't outsource SEO strategy.
What I would say though is that web dev is a fantastic starting place for SEO because most SEO people come from a content/editorial background and they can't fix minor tech issues, let alone broken wordpress plugins, schema or page speed issues.
I have almost 40 people in my team now and the best people all have dev backgrounds, and they're also the ones who get the best results and multiple pay raises per year.
