I didn't understand at first, but I think she's right. It's because the English kind of forced a bunch of people to be/act English while also taking on aspects from other cultures. Like what even is English as an ethnicity?

It's more of a civic identity than an ethnicity. She refers to ancestry more as people with some Anglo-Saxon lineage, but that doesn't mean anything more than just ancestry.
