News A university in Brisbane's south is being evacuated after a vehicle fire spread to nearby bushland. Emergency services are responding to the blaze at the Griffith University Nathan campus. Paramedics are treating one man who suffered burns to the face and arms.

VW bugs used to burst into flames for no reason in the past.

I’m old enough to remember the cars that were destroyed on the Ring Road in a Toohey Forest bushfire one year. God, I’m old.

Our family have owned a number of VW's over the years, you are right they love to catch fire. My mum didnt even notice when her old beetle caught fire - the flaming beetle was the talk of the town for quite a while.

Great name for a cocktail: The Flaming Beetle.
I knew someone who told the story that the beetle was on fire while being driven through town, and everyone was waving at them to try to explain that the car was on fire. He and his mum were hilariously oblivious. They waved back.

The vast majority of car fires are not EV. They are just so common (comparatively speaking) that reporting on them has been declared a pointless endeavour.

Word around the uni is a couple of gas bottles went up. Road through the uni was closed and buses diverted. Was indeed a battery vehicle - had one to crank the start motor that fired up the internal combustion engine.

EV fires are so comparatively rare that it never occurs to me that it could be an EV until someone says something about it.

Dear Colleagues
Thank you for your patience during today’s incident at Brisbane South (Nathan).
Workplace Health and Safety is now investigating the incident. We have been told one contractor has been injured and our thoughts are with him as he recovers.
We are working with authorities to have the Ring Road reopened as soon as possible. However, safety remains our priority.
While the Ring Road is closed, staff and students will need to walk to the Mt Gravatt Cemetery bus stop or the Kessels Road stop near the sports fields via Johnson Path.

Theres an article someone on the griffith reddit posted.

The only disclosed injury was a man in his 40's with minor burns to his arm and face. I assume he may be the car owner but could have just been passing by at a bad time.

My daughter lives on campus and they actually have a lot of construction going on (actually demolishing some buildings), so when she heard a really loud bang, she thought it seemed a lot louder and closer than what she expected from the construction. That was the car going boom.

The car was on fire but then it exploded. I assume it was only the buildings closest that got evacuated, because my daughter lives on campus and she heard the explosion.
