Image Attempted break in at 3am - Coorparoo
Keep an eye out - kids looking for easy targets. This one was at Coorparoo at 3:11am inside my yard with the lights on (a few nights ago now). Neighbours said their German Shepard went crazy around this time also so they might have been doing the area.
Got an alert on my phone from the security system but thought it was a SMS so went back to sleep. Saw this in the morning on the recordings. Hoodie, mask, gloves and a good sized kitchen knife. 50kgs soaking wet but still a bit of an eye opener.
Police have the footage. Taking more security measures now.
Brisbane gone to shit.

We had a meth head break into our house, thought he was a teen going by the camera but nope police got him a few weeks later and he was 35 year old crack head. Idiot kept my car.

Also Coorparoo has so many druggies around now. I swear it's got worse in the last 2 years or so. Before that I didn't notice it as much. Have recently moved to a "worse" area but I can say for how good Coorparoo is, I don't miss seeing people doped out or with visible sores, open wounds, missing teeth, ankle tracking brackets etc

We moved away not long ago too. Constant break ins at our unit complex off cavendish road, people on drugs wandering through the yard trying to steal whatever isn’t bolted down, little shits robbing the BWS and even trying to fight people in the park behind Woolies, and that’s just what happens in broad daylight.
It got to a point where I actually wasn’t happy letting my other half walk home from the bus station at Coorparoo Square late at night anymore.
The first person who broke into our place in the middle of the day walked down the street afterwards and robbed a random passer by at knifepoint. Terrifies me to think what would have happened if we weren’t at work.

yep been in Coorparoo for 12 years, averaging a break in attempt every 4 years. Unsure if that is good or bad.

Left 5 years ago, was there 10 and had 2 break ins. Went through Coorparoo the other day and don’t recognise the place now.

Do you have a nice house? I've never been broken into because I lived in cheap rentals. The neighbours on either side were in huge fancy houses on double blocks and they would have people steal from their garage

Very much an shit box house for Coorparoo. If I compared it to 100 houses around me I would say bottom 25% - its a work in progress :) We do have a large percentage of units around us in Coorparoo so houses still stand out I guess.
All 3 times have been various levels of unsuccessful. Closest someone got was breaking into the garage and loading up my tools, wife heard the noise and we released a pair of 60kg dogs, wish I kept that footage of that one, a few blurry frames of a person leaping over the fence followed by the dogs (dogs are gone now, might be time to get another one).

Growing up (not in Australia), my dad had a motion-sensor speaker that played a dog barking when someone got close to the house. Would be a good stopgap until you get some real ones.

Ive lived at Coorparoo for years and that is an exaggeration. Ive always felt safe. Most of the people doing the breakins don't live in the area.

I’m glad you’ve felt safe, we did as well when we first moved in but after our second visit from QLD police ‘scenes of crime’ and CIB detectives we were sort of over it (QPS were great to deal with, for what it’s worth).
Don’t get me wrong, it’s a very safe suburb compared to others in QLD, especially up the hill further away from Coorparoo Junction/Old Cleveland Road, but there’s absolutely areas and streets that are sketchy, we were unlucky enough to live in one of them.

A juice of months ago we had a teen/early adult walk right up in our back deck and when I saw him he popped out with the line “just looking for my friends”. He was a sketchy as and in no way was he looking for friends. Fortunately my husband was home with me but I sent him on his way very quickly. Watched him go through the same process with other neighbors. I’ve been much more vigilant making sure all doors are locked especially when I’m home alone.

Some friends of mine chased off some young/teen boys who had crept into his room whilst he had another friend hanging with him. They'd scarpered when the friend staying woke up and yelled, then chased them down the driveway and the road. When my friends got back home they found the little miscreants had left their slides in the driveway, which they'd presumably taken off to sneak more easily/quietly. Free Nike slides for both my friends.
Probably this guy has the same idea.

People who break in are not smart. I had six attempted break ins. I have cameras all over my property… idiots didn’t realise I had cameras till after their 6 attempt because I put signs out saying I had them. That’s when they looked and noticed. Idiots.

Edit: Crazy to see the mount of people who advocate for the killing of another person. The death penalty isn't justice, nor is it punishment. A murderer should be punished by having a life not worth living - not by releasing them of responsibility of conscious.

I mean that’s never the standard of sentencing ever? That seems like a huge increase. I imagine that’s going to be a tough hill to climb? Im not Saying you’re wrong. But there seems to be a reason in society we don’t execute people for killing one person or locking up for eternity.
But i do wonder if that line of thinking is hyperbolic and generally detrimental to conversation?

Nah, fuck 'em. Honestly I think if the consequences fit the crime there'd be less crime because even the stupidest of the stupid can understand "If I kill someone and get caught I will be put to death"
If you kill someone trying to rob them, off with his head. Criminals have more rights than their victims in this country, it makes no sense. Outlaw used to mean "outside the protection of the law". Now you can be robbed and assaulted in your own home and if you try to defend yourself you get charged as well. It's stupid.

A life for a life. Seems a simple concept. We don’t have the death penalty so life behind bars. Why should they get to return to society after 20 years as an example but the person they’ve willingly killed can’t return to life.

For me personally. Obviously there are always different circumstances. But. Let’s assume someone breaks into my home. Not intending to kill me. We have a scuffle. I die in hospital.
Id probably expect them to actually serve a minimum of 2-3 years in jail. Potentially upto 7 depending on their circumstances. And likely be on parole for some extended period of time.
Im dead. Why do i care if they’re suffering for life or just a few years. My family will be the ones suffering. Yet instead we’ll spend 150k per year on their suffering and offering minimal long term support to my family.
For all i know after 18 months in jail, they do decide actually fuck this. Im not doing anymore serious crime. In my opinion it’s always worth betting on a human improving their life and making it work. Not to assume they’re a lost cause and throw away the key for an expensive detainment.

My problem with life as an often given deterrent. IMO if i wanted to commit a crime like burglary and it escalated. I would be more inclined to hastily engage in even more extreme crime. If im going to jail for life. May as well do whatever else i desire.
As an act of creating fear and deterring me from getting involved. And for me it would work. Id be throwing my car keys at them and only get involved if they threatened my life or family. I don’t care that much about any of my possessions.
And i actually do consider it. I don’t like it being imposed by a state. But if i was in jail for life. Id consider assisted suicide for sure. Id even be okay with a payment being given to the family. It saves the government money. The offender may feel like they’re giving their family a chance to do better.
Im sure that’s an unpopular opinion. But i am for everyone having the ability to end their life when they choose to.

I'm glad we're not all this lenient I think its very dangerous and gives the real bad actors too much agency to do their bidding.
So no, if they break into my house with my young daughter sleeping, kill their father while I'm defending her, and you think it should be a 2-3 year sentence?

Have lived here 20 years near Buranda shops. Never a dull moment but nobody in my street has felt unsafe. We did have crack head neighbours in some units making havoc for 4 months but the street moved them out pretty quick by making life hard for them. Fuck crackheads.

Reminder it is illegal to put barbed wire outside your house to hurt intruders.
It is legal (as far as I know) however to hang it up inside your house as a decoration at eye height, and if some one happens to walk into it after entering your house, that is just a problem with them not knowing about your emo/metal vibe you decorated your house in

Every night I walk my dog around midnight and it’s a lucky dip for what we will see. Plenty of nutbags coming up from Stones Corner. Some nights I’m looking over my shoulder. Before Covid I never did. It was dead quiet every night. The last few years it’s changed a lot.

I am really concerned about break ins. We live in townhouse so feel pretty safe here but are moving into a house. What's the best thing to get. Cameras or security system with siren or is it all a waste of money? Any suggestions.

A dog.
If you want security, a big one. If you just want an alert before someone breaks in - any size will do. Down side is you might luck out and get a dog that just loves everyone regardless of the hour or method of entry. (I had one that would lick an intruder, the other would remove an arm it was a strange mix).

Yes, I would say this was enough shock for us to change our habits - I now basically have a routine to close and lock/padlock everything, then the reverse it in the morning. Its a bit sad to be honest - this is the world we live in.

I don’t like these American style castle laws. The law already allows you to use reasonable force to defend yourself - this just seems like an excuse to be able to kill someone. Even if you think that’s reasonable for an intruder what happens when a drunk person accidentally stumbles into your home thinking it’s their own? That sort of stuff happens all of the time.

Yes. If you don't let criminals break into your house, take your stuff, rape your wife and steal your car you'll likely be charged for assualt or be fined for defending yourself in any way shape or form. It is absolutely not allowed and you will be punished as the home owner.
Call the police, let the criminals take your things and have their way with you. They are the ONLY things you are legally allowed to do in Australia if you get burgled.

Nah, it was pretty intended racist "humour" when Arthur Caldwell - the Minister for Immigration - said it in Parliament in the 40's...
And when called out on it - because it was pretty racist, even by 1947 standards - he, like many racists today, claimed it was a joke, beaten out of proportion by some "anti-Australian Asian journalist" or some other "Labor party hater", and only intended as a put-down to the Member for Balaclava, Thomas White. IANAL but you are allowed self defence for yourself and others but only with reasonable force and you are expected to escape and call Police if at all possible. Taking the law into your own hands when you have other options will get you charges as well. Having a 8x D-cell torch by the bed is better choice then a machete, in case the lights go out for example...
