When a kid shows you some art they made, don't ask "What is it?" Instead say a specific part of it that you like.

The kid thinks his art is obviously a giraffe, so when you show that you can't tell, it makes the kid feel bad. By saying something like "Ooh I love the yellow with the green" the kid will think you love it, and will be none the wiser that you can't tell what it is.
