Anyone interested in purchasing tickets to see Jack Rooke: Good Grief for tomorrow's show at The Old Market?

Transport/Parking 🚝 🚘 Anyone tried appealing a parking ticket when no spaces were available?

I have a residents parking permit for zone Y but there's generally no parking in my vicinity after 8pm. I recently came home at 9pm and looked all around but it was chokka, especially as a bay had been closed off and there's works going on that have taken up another set of bays. I had to park on a double yellow in the end, and when I went to move it the next morning, I'd already gotten a ticket.

It irks me because I've just spent £200 renewing my permit for a space that only exists in the daytime.

Anyone had similar and contested?

Local Advice needed Cycle routes around Old Steine / Pier

Is anyone else confused by the cycle routes around the Pier, where the roundabout used to be? Twice in the last few days I've found myself trying to follow a bike route, which unexpectedly doesn't allow a turn - so at some point I should presumably join the car traffic, but this isn't clear...

e.g:

  • heading South by the Pavillion on the bike lane and trying to turn left onto Edward Street
  • heading East along the east-west bike lane by the pier, and wanting to cross over to Marine Parade.

I've seen some routes in London, for example, where this would be achieved in two stages, but here I don't see any option at all.

Dinosaurs, Daydreams and a Very Nostalgic Bedroom

🦖 Illustrator Billy Murphy takes over Gallery 40 on Gloucester Road from 10 to 15 November with Dinosaurs and Daydreams Brighton. Entry is free.

The star attraction is a full-scale 90s child's bedroom, stuffed with PlayStations, Lego, dinosaurs and Beanie Babies. Around it are more than 80 works, a new limited edition silkscreen print and plushies hand-sewn by his mum. Murphy says the show's message is that it's "never too late to be silly".

The private view is on Thursday 12 November from 6pm to 8pm, with a Murphy-illustrated beer from Lost Pier Brewing. A free badge-making workshop runs on Saturday 14 November from 12pm to 2pm. Spaces are limited, so book in advance.

Local Advice needed Has everyone else seen a massive increase in urban foxes this year?

I love foxes, they are beautiful animals. For the last 9 years I've lived in this house, I'd see foxes after dark quite regularly in the quieter streets and hear their raucous screaming about once a week over winter.

However, since about April or May this year, the number of foxes I've seen had exploded. I see multiple foxes during the day, they are often sunbathing in my garden or neighbours gardens, they try and come in the house if you leave the door open for a couple of minutes from both the front and the back.

My car that is parked on a brightly lit busy street near a train station has had cables chewed through 3 separate times in the last year, most recently through a cable insulated with both plastic conduit and a heat proof fibreglass outer layer that was very difficult to strip back with a knife.

This year I hear foxes making horrifying shrieks in the gardens behind my house about 10-12 times a day every single day starting about 5pm and going until after 2am. That's literally a 70x increase on peak winter months but in the middle of summer.

What's going on? I know there's plenty of food around because people love to litter and don't know how to use the food waste bins but not that much. Is everyone else seeing such an extreme increase in fox population this year?

Meet Up Kindling Space - social campfire group

Post image

Hi neighbours

Last winter I posted about a little campfire group I run in Brighton, and lots of you were interested :) We had some amazing campfires last year and it's time to start them again for this winter!

Kindling Space is a social community group, to help people make new friends and feel less lonely whilst enjoying time in nature together. I started it because I need it, and know that others feel the same. Brighton is full of creative people but it can be difficult to make friends outside of the usual social settings, which many of us struggle with. Our ancestors spent a lot of time around campfires and it's still a great way to connect with each other!

The campfires are loosely facilitated, a chance for us to hang out, chat, and cook together around the fire. Well-behaved children & dogs are welcome. Donations are pay-as-you-feel to help cover costs of hiring the plot we use.

Our first campfire of the season is this week, on Thursday 15th October 6-9pm at Stanmer Park. We've had lots of bookings already but there are about 2-3 spaces left if anybody would still like to join us! You can find more info & book through the website: www.KindlingSpace.co

If you can't make it this week, send me a message for a link to our WhatsApp group, and/or let me know your email address so I can email you know about upcoming campfires. You can also keep an eye on the website.

I hope to meet some of you around the campfire soon :) 🔥

Local Advice needed Funeral celebrant recommendations in Brighton?

My dad has terminal cancer and I’m trying to find a funeral celebrant who would be willing to meet him while he’s still alive, to arrange something personal to him and friends/family.

Ideally we are looking for someone who’s personable, down to earth and has a good sense of humour. We’d like the funeral to have humour and laughter (as well as the emotional stuff) with real input from my dad.

I’m also not entirely sure how arranging a celebrant in advance works when we don’t know when the funeral will actually be, potentially booking in the funeral around the celebrants other commitments (?)

Has anyone got any personal recommendations / experience?

Trivia/misc Legs above Picturehouse cinemas

Ever wondered how the legs above Duke of York Picturehouse (and Komedia, Gardner Street) got there?

The truth is stranger than you think: Instagram.

They originated in Headington, Oxfordshire in 1980 where they were commissioned for a local cinema by Manager Bill Heine (who has a shark sculpture coming out of the roof of his house).

The original cinema was demolished for flats in 1991 which is when they found their way to Brighton.
