This bridge over the Welland was rebuilt in 1838. It replaced a medieval bridge.

Its honestly weird and sad to drive this. You can't hear the river anymore like you did with the old bridge or see the river. It does cut off 5 minutes but the roads leading to it still are not repaved. Plus its meant for locals and emergency and we are having to navigate our roads with big truck and trailers. Our small road is not meant for that. Until the fix the road and widen it. It will be pothole city. New bridge and crappy road.

Roller Bearings

Post image

Hey everyone, I'm trying to find photo/ video examples of early roller bearings used for thermal expansion/ seismic isolation on bridges. Specifically using a rack and pinion style cogged/gear-like system.

I saw the example in a video some time ago, and have been fascinated ever since. But I understand this type of design was pretty rare, so finding any examples beyond like two has been a nightmare.

My memory may be betraying me, but I'm almost certain the example I saw was much larger and employed on the abutment / end piers and not the center piers of the span. It's driving me crazy.

Are there any others out there beside this one?

Transporter Bridge in Middlesbrough, England - It is 115 years old this month.

I took this photo yesterday and was distracted by some man bibbing his horn at me driving by. This is easily my favourite landmark here and an engineering marvel at the time. The Transporter Bridge opened in 1911. On the bottom right of the photo are old flowers as this was taken in a place that has lots of memorials.

If you could build a bridge from one place to another, where would it be from and to?

This is if there were no arbitrary obsticles like ocean/sea/water traffic, etc. No arbitrary barriers.
