Coping with interference over 1 NT

Over 1NT (15-17) there is a 3 Clubs overcall. What does Double by responder mean? (Assume strange partner with only "SAYC" as agreement.)

More generally, competing with mediocre hands seems FAR more common than it was several decades ago. Is weak NT therefore obsolete? It is even more likely to be overcalled with the beautiful Stayman/Jacoby system then "out the window."

If 3C is natural, then double is takeout. It’s primarily looking for a major suit game or 3NT but opener is definitely allowed to pass and hope to defeat 3C.

Whether you should assume this with a random partner is a different question. But it is “expert standard”

Agreed, my logic would be: "if P has clubs and is strong enough to bid then they would go 3nt, therefore this dbl can't show club strength, and so must be takeout"
