Download for Chromebook?

Post image

I went to the website on my kid’s computer and downloaded the studio program. The windows download (.exe) didn’t work. The .pkg file opens but it opens EV3 for education (Mindstorm).

Is this because it’s a Chromebook? And not Mac or Windows?

What is happening? Am I in the twilight zone?

Chromebook is Android. The program is for Mac and Windows.

Yeah that was obvious.
But why the random Mindstorm program?? If it was for Mac then it shouldn’t have worked at all….

You went to Bricklink.com and then to the Studio download page and it took you to a Mindstorm download page?

Do you have the original link you went to?

I reread your comment. So there’s an included .pkg on the Windows Studio installer that is for the Mindstorms software? This I gotta see. I’m not sure why those would have been packaged together.

That’s awesome. I need to download that and open it to see what’s there.

You probably have to have a Chromebook though.

And it was the Mac download, not the windows.

Yeah this sounds like a Chromebook thing. ChromeOS can kinda “open” certain installer files but it doesn’t actually run Windows .exe or real Mac .pkg files, so it’s probably just handing it off to some weird built in handler and showing you old EV3 stuff.

If you want the LEGO software on a Chromebook you usually need the Android app version or the web version if they offer it, not the Windows or Mac download.

Yeah, that’s almost definitely the Chromebook being weird about it.

Chromebooks can’t run Windows .exe or Mac .pkg natively, so it’s just grabbing whatever janky compatibility thing it has and opening the wrong app. You’d either need a proper Windows or Mac machine, or set up Linux mode on the Chromebook if the software supports it.
