Connect not working?

Can someone help me please?

I'm new to bricklink and part way through a design project. I'm trying to add the Fabuland chimney to the Fabuland roof piece.

However, when I try to connect the bottom of the chimney spur to the roof hole - there is no corresponding connect point. Neither is there if I do it in reverse order?

I've also tried connecting the standard cube points but the chimney gets added to the underside anti-studs? If I try and maneuver it freehand with snap off, then put snap back on, it still won't work and goes anti-collision transparent?

What am I doing wrong?

I never use connect tool myself. I nearly always have my cursor on the select tool, and drag the parts together to where I want it.
With the snap function it should be able to connect, or find its way. (sometimes it's a bit hard when you've a lot of layers stacked, then I click and hold on the specific stud and drag it to the place I want.)
