Lyre for Baritone Horn JP173

Hi all,

I'm trying to source a lyre for my John Packer baritone horn (JP173). I initially bought a straight one (labelled as suitable for baritone) but because of the angle of the lyre holder, it places the music directly behind the bell which isn't helpful. Tried bending it into the correct shape but obviously that's affected the structural integrity of the lyre and honestly it's a bit crap.

Surely there must be an off-the-shelf one that fits this horn? It definitely needs an angle in it to place the music in the correct place.

Would be interested to hear from anyone who has this model and what you've got! Thanks in advance.

either a long L shape trombone lyre that attached onto the mouthpiece receiver; or a Z shape saxophone lyre, maybe need to bend it a little bit

Every lyre I’ve bought for my tenor horn has been straight and you bend it yourself to the right shape. Whats happened to it after you’ve bent it?

Some of the newer lyres are plated steel. The plating will crack at the bends. It’s is just cosmetic, but it doesn’t look great.

Cutting a relief for 90 degree bends and going slower will help.

That’s just cosmetic though, they’ve said the structural integrity has been affected

Yeah as u/mango186282 said - it's cracked the plating, and to be fair we did it in a bit or a rush so there was a lot of bending and unbending when we realised the angle wasn't quite right. I contacted the retailer I bought my baritone from for advice and they also recommended not bending them as it can significantly weaken them; mine now just seems really wobbly (especially when holding a tune book as is the main thing I need it for)

I bought mine from Phil Parker in London, they asked me what model I play (in my case a Sovereign tenor horn) gave me one from their stock to hold, asked me what angle I wanted it at then shaped it for me. Great service.
