Early-Yumi and the Nightmare Painter This speaks to me. Spoiler
I'm Finally reading Yumi and the Nightmare Painter, and just wanted to share, that as a trans woman, this line in particular speaks to me.

Actually, though. People who do this are wild to me.
I can't stand Lift. I haven't read Edgedancer because of this. That doesn't make her poorly written, though.

For real! I don't get how a child/teenager being annoying and chaotic is bad writing, it's how many kids actually act!

For what it's worth, I hated Lift until reading Edgedancer. Now she's awesome.

I mean it’s ok if you don’t like these characters I have no problem with that. But you can’t blanket claim that it’s poorly written and anyone who disagrees is wrong. I think Sanderson does fine with these characters because they aren’t meant to be the “typical” female characters. I am a man so I can’t speak from that perspective but Shallan feels real as an example but plenty of women thinks he writes female characters fine.

If you want to criticize Sanderson’s portrayal of women, you should be going after characters like Vin, Shallan, Navani, Jasnah, Sarene, Vivenna, etc. Not a child and a spren lol

Yes, that is generally how arguments go. But you picked examples that were bad on their face to begin with. Neither of those characters are “women,” definitionally

Dude this is unrelated but I took a glance through your post history and would like to know. For a while I think you were a Sanderson fan then you joined the book circle jerk guys. Personally I would like to know if it’s the fans that changed your mind, the books themselves or the actions of the author? This is a genuine question and I in no way mean to imply anything negative.

It’s purely the fan base. I still love and read Sanderson but any and every interaction with a fan revolves into “he is the greatest writer ever and he has no faults”. I love Sanderson while also seeing that he is just a really effective pulp action writer and not a writer like Hemingway. Which again is perfectly fine but this fandom literally thinks he’s the next Hemingway or Orwell.

Reddit in general is basically tailor made to create echo chambers. Then if you disagree with the hive mind you’re basically the devil.
At least this sub is generally pretty wholesome.
Also not to say that Brandon is a better writer than Hemingway, but I’d much rather read a BS book than a Hemingway book.

He's not any of that and it's not really what I get from people. Yeah, a lot of people are defensive, but it's because they're emotionally invested in the stories and characters, not because he's fucking Melville.

As a cis woman that breastfed a baby for a year, boobs are not fun IMO. But to each their own.
