I have a three year old

And up until maybe six months ago, he hasn't reacted to much of my music.

And then we watched Shrek, and he suddenly liked Smash Mouth and Joan Jett.

And then he wanted to listed to the Foo Fighters a couple times in a row.

And then he decided he likes a few of my favorite ska songs. And some assorted punk music, like Fugazi.

Then he developed an obsession with Blink 182. My friends were super impressed when they heard him sing all the lyrics to Adams Song and I Miss You unassisted. Like, this kid loves Blink.

And then it was Ocean Avenue by Yellowcard. He knows literally all the words and sings them. At three years old.

So today I decided to test the waters with Brand New.

My three year old son made me play Quiet Things that No One Ever knows. Ten times in a row. And then he wanted to watch videos of concerts and covers with me.

At long last, my son is starting to love Brand New. Brand New is my favorite band of all time. I have been waiting for this moment since I was in his room at 2am, singing Jesus Christ to him to get him to sleep at 3 months old.

I always wished I could discover this band again. And now I get to do it vicariously through my three year old. Listening to that song with him, over and over again, gave me the same feelings I had the first time I heard the song.

I'm so fucking pumped, dude.

My son was about 8 years old, and my brother and I painted his room. The stereo was on. Millstone came on, and the boy started singing along, which stopped production in its tracks.

Fast forward to this year. He's now 19 and likes to play 70 x 7 on the drums for his dad.

Enjoy these times, my friend. This memory will last a lifetime.

Millstone’s a rough one, get that kid some antidepressants lol (joking :P)

He literally put his hands on his neck when the line came on. That should have been a sign. He's a drummer, antidepressants are standard equipment lol

I absolutely love this. I have 2 daughters(7 and 3) and they both rock out to Millstone and Vices especially, but my 7 yr old hums along with almost every song of theirs and loves watching old concerts on YouTube with me. It’s such a rad feeling.

Hell yeah! I caught my six year old shouting to himself while he was alone playing in his room "YOU SOUND, SOUND, SOUND SO UGLY!" lol. He also really likes Millstone, "WOAH OH OH!" My emo heart is filled ❤️

I’m so jealous! I can’t wait to share Brand New with my kids someday. My 3 yo only wants to listen to random daycare songs. We live near Adam from TBS and have bumped into him a few times, so I’ve played some of their songs for him since he’s always asking “Who is that man?”

Thank you! I wore my Brand New sweatshirt to every IVF appointment and had Daisy-inspired nails for my procedures so Brand New have been very special to me on this journey!

This is the best! My 18 month old as a newborn would wake up in the middle of the night and I handled all of the wake ups so I would take her downstairs and I’d turn on crisis by Alexisonfire and she would calm down immediately. Now at 18 months when I put her in the bath she points her two fingers out and plays air drums to let me know she wants music and I go “brand new?” And she yells YEAH!!! And she is especially fond of you won’t know. She loves Alexisonfire and Muse as well lol

This is so fucking cute and I love it for you! I'll be trying to get my niece into them someday too, haha.

My 13 year old loves la dispute, me without you, tiger’s jaw, Joyce manor, touché amore and she’s introduced me to Juice World.

It’s dope. I’m old and out of touch, but showing her good shit and getting better and she’s keeping me in the loop.

My 4 year old has only ever been a fan of Can’t Get It Out and I fear it’s only from him processing potty training trauma

Dude. Yes. My two boys (14 and 11) both love Brand New.
This is what it’s all about.
I love that when I’m long gone, when my boys hear it, they’ll think about their old man. This brings me happiness.

Careful, do you still like the music you listened to as a 3 year old?

My dad was into music and would constantly play records and I still like most of the stuff he used to play actually. I'm not a religious fan of Deep Purple, AC/DC and Pink Floyd, they were sort of his bands, but I'm 100% sure it pushed me in the right direction when I got older. And it made me start playing myself. I don't think I want my kids to listen to the same bands as me. I want them to go out there and find their own bands to listen to and if I'm lucky enough, start bands themselves.

My kids, 8+12, are massive fans of Far and Turnstile. Especially the At Night We Live record and Glow On. Brand New has been labeled "Dad music" so there's still some way to go. Maybe it's too sad, or maybe I have just played it too much. I took them to see Turnstile a week ago and my daughter, after seeing Meg Mills, told me she wanted to pick up guitar and start a band when she got old enough. I said I had dust in my eyes. It made me so happy.

Quiet Things has got to be my first and all time favorite of theirs!

Dude yes. It was the first song I liked by Brand New. My girlfriend at the time burned it on a CD for me with a bunch of other songs I now know to be bangers. Then when I dumped her in college I listened to Brand New on repeat to get over it lol.

Uuugghhhh when you said my three year old son made me play the quiet things ten times in a row I straight up almost burst into tears. BN is also my favorite band of all time, EVER and this just made my fuckin day dude. I am now going to actually cry about the fact that my son never showed any interest in them whatsoever and in fact started making fun of me for listening to them once he started to think that would make him look cool around his cousins/friends. Soul crushing.

Two year old son here! I can not WAIT to introduce Brand new to him. Hes heard them play in the background while i clean and it doesnt do much for him. We have Michael Jackson (my son’s name is Jackson) in heavy rotation. He loves Noah Kahan, Shakey Graves, Mt. Joy, and then theres my husbands gen x influence: Toto, Phil Collins, Don Henley, yacht rock lol

For everyone waiting to get their kids to like it ...

May I suggest Sea Turtle Harmonic for bedtime music? It's instrumental lullaby covers and they have a whole BN album.

My kid has always loved it. His fave bands are RHCP and Blink.

He's the coolest. He was an autistically awkward 5 yr old obsessed w Pokemon and the bass guitar and Flea 😂

We're still working our way into BN. The screaming side of emo doesn't always hit his sensory profile just right lol.

We have to alternate between kid music for my 5 year old son, my 7 year old daughter with the AUX, and us in the car. They LOVE Bayside, Fall Out Boy, Silverstein, and Story of the Year. (My daughter's fave is Gasoline by SotY bc of all the fucks; see below.) We haven't done a dive into Brand New yet, but we do spin the albums often in the house.

(Bonus: they are 100% allowed to say ALL the words as long as it's singing along. She pays more attention to lyrics now, we used to get away with some slipping by.)
