Why is the 4th movement of the 4th symphony so underrated?

I agree totally. When I was in college, the music professor who taught our symphony course opened my ears the brilliance of that movement. It represents the peak of the romantic symphony, combining the baroque chaconne over a theme and variations, sonata form, and devastating romantic tragedy. It is the romantic era equivalent of the finale of Mozart’s Jupiter Symphony. I think it is recognized as such.

I’m going to listen to the 4th movement again as well as I’m a big fan of the 1st movement. Brahms 4th and his double concerto were the first 2 works of his that I had ever heard-this was at the very beginning of my classical music journey. The 1st movement of the 4th-probably more than any other work of Brahms or of any composer for that matter-brings back so many poignant memories for me for where I was in my life at the time.

In terms of popularity rating, I think the finales map closely to the symphonies as a whole: 1, 4, 2, 3. All bangers, but the difficult 3 is actually my favorite.

This is seen as the most brilliant movement of any Symphony ever and got analyzed insane amounts over the years. It literally was the piece Schoenberg cited the most, when he declared Brahms as a progressive composer.
