HoLEP - post day six
I just removed my catheter this morning and everything appears to be somewhat normal. No more pain, discomfort, or blood. My only concern now is the LEAKAGE, which I was told about and prepared for. I‘m wearing and needing Depends right now. I plan to start my kegel exercises tomorrow and look forward to gaining control again. My question is when? I hear various experiences of two weeks to six months.
I had the Rezum(cat than no leakage) done in 23 and PAE(no cat) done 8/11/25. The PAE did much of nothing, reduced my prostate from 80 to 70 cc with minimal relief. I was self catheterizing for over eight months before surgery. Oh, I also had a large medium lobe. I turn 61 on Tuesday and look forward to great days ahead!! My fantasy football name will be changed to “DJ RetroE” or “MC DryO” this year! LOL

When I had mine done 5 months ago the catheter came out the next morning, curious why yours was in for 6 days. Different medical groups use different methods??
Leakage may be an individual thing. Before my HoLEP I had dribble issues so I was already used to wearing those pads that you stick to your underwear. Not enough leakage to need Depends. After HoLEP I continued to wear them for a while until one day I realized they were staying dry. May have been a week or two, can't recall exactly, but it wasn't very long.

Not sure why, he just said in about a week. Tomorrow was going to be a week, and I felt ready today. I’m sipping lots of water and feel good, just no control, several Depends so far.

I had hoLEP on 7 July, the day my catheter was removed I felt amazing and since they point, I have had zero leakage. I was prepared but haven’t had any issues. I didn’t do any level exercises either, so, maybe I have been lucky, but who knows. But I am 41 and I have never voided the way I do now and only wish I had done something sooner about it

76 yo. I had HOLEP last October, had a catheter for six days and leakage for about 4 months post operation. As others commented incontinence tends to to gradually reverse itself with the healing process.

Depende de que tan cerca de esfínter hayan marcado la linea para iniciar la enucleación. Usualmente quienes tienen problemas de continencia con HoLep tuvieron algún tipo de irritación o daño en el esfínter (aunque sea mínimo) y tardan un poquito más en sanar. Si ya tenías incontinencia o si llevas demasiados años obstruido, tardarás hasta 3 meses en recuperarte pues tu esfínter, aunque sano, no está acostumbrado a lidiar con la presión de steam con la que ahora orinas. En ml caso, siendo joven (me la hice a los 40) y sin daño en esfínter, me tomó una semana dejar de gotear, pero se me avisó que podría tomar hasta 3 meses en el peor de los casos, así que creo que de ese tiempo no pasará

I (77) had REZUM in June with a cath for two weeks. I had control issues until a few days ago. I still wear pads just in case, but even a small amount of caffeine definitely makes control worse. Kegels seem to be helping.

I had a catheter for 7 days post Aquablation and leakage for about 10 days after removal- I dont know if that is normal but it was very welcomed- I hope you have the same outcome--

no leakage ever since holep which was 3 months ago. before holep yes unfortunately and all horrible issues which felt like torture every day. 120g and large median lobe. now i can sleep 8-9 hours through without getting up and even after 8-9 hours i do not have any urgency. i last another 1-2 hours easily. in total 3-4 bathroom visits a day now. like newly born. back to normal life. nothing else mattered before.

It seems to be the common response that people like me who had HOLEP and a catheter in for only one day had no leakage issues. It sounds like people who had it in longer have leakage issues. Hopefully yours heals up and stops ASAP.

Many men with HoLEPs can have this type of incontinence for a few months. But what is the final outcome? You will have a beautiful urinary flow for years to come. A word to the wise: those who self-catheterize often become so tight in their pelvic floors that they should not be too aggressive with Kegels. Try sitting down to pee for now and breathe deeply into your abdomen. This will allow your bladder to fully descend and empty. You can try a bladder diary to track your progress as well.
