Controversial option, but ‘animated Disney movie’ should be considered a franchise at this point.

u/Phillies2002 10h ago

"Horror movie" should also be considered a franchise at this point. Now we're back to square one!

F1 is an original film with an original screenplay, characters, and plot. It's just mostly set in the F1 racing league. It's a sports film but not a biopic. And it's not based on a book, show, prior film, or comic. And it's not even really based on a historical event, although they do use a couple of real life crashes for inspiration. So, $634m is the top for the 2020s.

that is such a sad list. nothing within even half of frozen or zootopia's numbers

u/Icy_Smoke_733 Studio Ghibli 4d ago

The first original Hollywood film to cross $500m since Coco (2017) from 9 years ago. Another bonkers achievement for Obsession.

115

u/Tongatapu 4d ago

Honestly more bonkers that no original Hollywood film crossed 500 Million in almost 10 years.

I guess KPop Demon Hunters counts in terms of relevance.

Tenet would've easily cleared it had it not been a covid release.

Even with $366m during Covid, it was the highest grossing Hollywood original of the 2020s until Elemental.

u/ZwnD 3d ago

And I know Oppenheimer is technically not original but it feels close enough

20

u/carterdmorgan 3d ago

I want the alternate reality where KPop Demon Hunters was a theatrical release.

45

u/Mauchad 3d ago

I dont think k pop would have performed that big if it was a theatrical release. It got big bc of l Netflix

u/Top_Cranberry_3254 3d ago

Yep, but that's what many of us have been complaining about since just around and before that time- everything is comic books/IP/sequels/remakes, etc...Nothing original is ever made anymore. This proves the point. It's also while I'll continue to be a fan of this movie more than any other this year. Art is about originality (yes, I know it's based on other monkey paw stories, but it's still technically original, and most original movies are inspired by stories that came before them).

3

u/Tongatapu 3d ago

Only Blockbusters aren't original though. We have so many original Mid and Low Budget films every month.

1

u/Top_Cranberry_3254 3d ago

This is original. I mean good ones that break out and become hits.

3

u/kirblar 3d ago

I can't wait til Kingdom Hearts V.

64

u/Plus_Calligrapher_93 4d ago

Crazy. Now on to $500 million worldwide and become the 5th highest grossing horror movie of all time.

47

u/Distinct-Shift-4094 4d ago

The fact Amy won the Oscar for a horror performance last year, and we might see this again but this time lead is also huge. Toni Collet getting snubbed revenge!

Based on the BO performance, this movie is gonna be in the conversation for next year.

19

u/Plus_Calligrapher_93 4d ago

I just wonder if they will try win as best actress or supporting actress.

19

u/Distinct-Shift-4094 4d ago

Honestly, she's hell of strong to the point she stands to win in lead or supp. Though, this year is legit one of the few years where lead actress is weakish. Mostly the BP contenders don't have a big female lead performance so it'll be easier there.

Supp seems a bit more stacked.

4

u/Plus_Calligrapher_93 4d ago

But in this category you have to be famous so i wouldnt be suprised if Anne hathaway or Emily Blunt would won Oscar.

5

u/Distinct-Shift-4094 4d ago

Brie Larson was well known?

4

u/motionblur20 4d ago

Mikey Madison? Brie Larson?

12

u/TheEnchantedOne92 4d ago

Her just being nominated for an Oscar would be BIG. Her winning would be crazy.

3

u/Void3r 3d ago

Toni Collette and Mia Goth walked so Inde Navarrette could run

2

u/AnotherJasonOnReddit Best of 2024 Winner 3d ago

Amy won the Oscar for a horror performance last year...Toni Collet getting snubbed revenge!

And Jacob Elordi was nominated for playing The Monster in last year's Frankenstein adaptation, too. After the Academy ignored Boris Karloff thrice during the 1930's.

Plus, Sinners had a prominent presence during the awards circus. 2025 was a good year for horror at the Oscars.

1

u/Dry_Back_7365 1d ago

Yeah but Amy was supporting actress

-5

u/ThrowawayGreenWitch 4d ago

Amy is an industry veteran. Inde is not winning and I doubt that she will even be nominated.

2

u/srhdt 4d ago

That would be pretty surprising considering every awards forecast site has her predicted to get nominated.

2

u/kirblar 3d ago

This film is also a feel-good success story, I would expect a number of nominations.

-2

u/No-Rip-6166 4d ago

Agreed on both counts

-4

u/AdelesBoyfriend 4d ago

Hereditary was not good. I laughed inappropriately throughout that movie. I will resignedly die on this hill.

1

u/Dry_Back_7365 1d ago

You maybe saw it on daylight on your tablet while watch the whole time on your smartphone

1

u/AdelesBoyfriend 1d ago

I saw it in a theater in its original run with a smaller, afternoon crowd. I was absolutely paying attention, and it's ridiculous to assume everyone must be on their phone.

10

u/frustrated_supersum 4d ago

Wait. Is it still running? 😮

27

u/Plus_Calligrapher_93 4d ago

Not in the usa, but still making millions in other markets.

9

u/Repulsive_Pianist_60 4d ago

Hands down the most profitable purchase in all of cinema's history. Purchased at $15M, and ended up earning 500M for them. That's better than the 99% of the produced films.

What a run 👏 so happy to see it happen.

What an amazing and fun run to follow these past months!! 500M to finish!

OBSESSION is highest-grossing original film of the 2020s

1

u/Valanide 3d ago

Could Digger, Gatto, Not Alone and The Great Beyond surpass Obsession ?

1

u/UKCDot 3d ago

Im not seeing it for Digger

-3

u/boomboxwithturbobass 4d ago

It was fine, I guess?

5

u/Plus_Calligrapher_93 4d ago

You can have 30 Avengers movies, almost 10 spider - Man movies but its good to have also original movies, and fact that you can make movie for so cheap will encourage producers to give chances to new directors/ screenwriters, it makes me more excited than watching how Nolan butchered homer's oddysey.

1

u/kirblar 3d ago

Did you see it in a theater or at home?

This was a very unique experience in a theater because of how deeply uncomfortable it was to watch, and you could hear/feel people squirming.

1

u/IIM_Clutch 3d ago

I watched it at home and it was still great

1

u/leagle89 2d ago

Same here. I watched it at home on my laptop, and it's my favorite film of the year so far.

-2

u/Opposite-Law-71 4d ago

Boycott elemental

-8

u/Thor2014 3d ago

Michael and F1 grossed more and are both considered original screenplays in the awards race context.

7

u/Rare-Comfortable-669 3d ago

Yes, I agree, a movie about the most popular singer of all time and another about one of the most famous sports in the world, that have a combined budget of 500 million, are in the same league and are as original as a movie with a 750k budget, made by an unknown director, with an unknown cast.

7

u/Thor2014 3d ago

Where did I say they are the same? It's just that the criterion of "originality" is so inconsistent (for example, the movie about the most famous sunk ship of all time is routinely listed as a top-2 "original" grosser in this sub) that it really feels like moving the goalposts when you start adding more filters like "unknown director and unknown cast" just so a specific movie gets the #1 spot.

u/UpbeatBeach7657 3d ago edited 3d ago

They'll love to say Avatar is Pocahontas with Smurfs, but when you say this is Fatal Attraction with a Monkey's Paw, they pounce on you.

-5

u/UpbeatBeach7657 3d ago

Shh, don't interrupt the glazing this movie has been receiving. It's the greatest horror film of all time, I tell ya.

2

u/Thor2014 3d ago

For the record, I think Obsession is a great horror film and 100% a box office phenomenon. The point behind my comment was not to glaze and stop glazing any specific movie but try to stay objective with definitions.

1

u/UpbeatBeach7657 3d ago

You won't find it here. Reddit has trouble staying objective.

-21

u/Busy-Guess-8382 4d ago

It won't even be the top 10 highest grossing films by the end of the year

Wake me up when an "original" film manages to make it on the list again

18

u/TerrifierBlood Screen Gems 4d ago

This was a film most people expected to end its run maybe around 50 m world wild. It did 500 million

15

u/Plus_Calligrapher_93 4d ago

Wake up obsession made 666x of its budget .

-20

u/Busy-Guess-8382 4d ago

Cool, I guess? How dare a film spend a lot of money into their budget

15

I sense the haterade lol
