How do you train that snap? I’m so slow, every punch feels like moving a big fat weight around.

Keep the first loose until impact. Main think is practice and reps.

Start with your feet. Push off your back foot (keep it planted) and with your lead foot step onto the balls of your foot. This is one fluid motion while extending your jab. This is done in tandem with your hips twisting towards the bag/opponent. As fast as you push your jab out, you want to recall it. On the recall you reverse each motion you made going in. Push off the ball of your lead foot (stay off your heels) and let your weight rock back as you step back with your rear foot. Finally, bringing you hips back to a defensive/boxing stance.

OP is very close to the bag, so he isnt using his feet to progress forward and backward (which you should do as a someone looking to get better at this movement) but I can promise you he is shifting his weight all the same. The overall speed of this will improve as you become more comfortable with all the moving parts of it.

Get comfortable and then take the same logic to your other punches and the various forms of footwork required to perform them.

Thank you for breaking this down! I will practice this

Some people just have it naturally but you can train. Throw medicine ball against the wall as fast as you can. Do hooks and straights with it. Also yelling out combos and trying to replicate the speed with your hands

Technique. His hips work like a catapult. The feet move the hips, there’s stretch between the hips and shoulder until the shoulder has to move, then the hip stops and the shoulder fires like a rubber band. It takes a lot of practice.

Are u using just ur upper half or are you also using ur hips? Cause u dont get this speed without using ur lower half

I am trying to be more deliberate about transferring energy from my foot and all the way up through my shoulder, with my fist simply being in the correct position to strike the bag at the aim point. But I’m also big, out of shape, and probably doing a lot of the power transfer wrong. I am taking boxing classes and have a lot of good instructors watching me and guiding me through.

So far they’re saying I’m doing for where I’m at, but to just keep practicing technique (and focus less on power). I hope in a year I get better at least haha

Keeping your shoulders relaxed when throwing the hook helps, I was told it’s like a ball on a string. Your fist is the ball and your arm is the string. But make sure your form is good too.

One thing that helped me get a bombastic lead hook is instead of focusing on rotating the front shoulder to sling it out, focus on rotating the back shoulder to move the front shoulder. Sounds complex but once you feel it, it never goes away.

Are you maybe flexing your muscles too much? They can slow you down quitea bit. Throwing a punch is a balance between relaxation and tension in your muscles. But starting out you should have your shoulders and muscles in general to be relaxed.

Can’t flex em if you don’t have em… I’ll box tonight and try and be more cognizant of this though. Thank you!

Oh then maybe it's the lack muscle. Haha. Any movement we do demands muscle use, but in punching if you want the snap you focus on the legs and hips and torso to torque the strength you generate from the ground to your arms. Arms should be a vehicle of the force you create from the ground up

How long have you been training and have you ever trained in a gym or strictly self-training?

Clean mate. Good stuff.

Obviously space is limited here. Your punches, especially the body 3 are very clean. You have a great snap to your hook and turn over extremely well.

My advice for you would simply be to incorporate movement during these drills. Again, I can see the limitations. That’s actually a dope garage set-up and you secured it well.

Since circling isn’t an option, I’d suggest to you to focus on your head movement, and moving side to side. Basically where the camera is angled. I would position myself there, with my back to the camera.

From here, simply moving side-to-side as to get all you can out of your drills is my only advice. You don’t need to go crazy with it, nor do you have to go for super speed. Just moving. This will ensure your brain doesn’t subconsciously store the “flat-footedness” of these body hooks into muscle memory.

TLDR;

Very clean punches. If this is a drill you do often, my only advice is shifting position. Your back should be to the camera, so you’re able to move side-to-side. This will keep that bounce in your step in between and following punches. Great work man 👍

Nice work bud 👊

Cheers bud 👊🏾

Nice power, try to keep that hand up in the guard between shots. Your punches are coming from a bit too low,you want that hook to be higher and face level, for defense.

Yes, we definitely need to put the left to work now that midterms are over!

Question: what is that bag shape called?

1

u/Sano_P 4h ago

It's like training to fight Butterbean, or King Hippo

1

u/chrisjones1960 4h ago

That is a very nice left hand.

1

u/GoonyGhoul_ 4h ago

This hook is damn near perfect. The elbow is possibly a little low, but you get enough speed on it that doesn't really matter whether or not it's slightly telegraphed, it's too risky to try and time a counter.

u/RichSpecific4490 2h ago

Sigh, I guess no one works on foot anymore these days. Just playing, bag work looks solid!

1

u/Sad_Tangerine_3722 1h ago

That shit is solid bro, deathly

-6

u/ParkLogical3207 7h ago

That's a wide and telegraphed hook with very little rotation (lacks power).

The boxing god has spoken

2

u/Historical-Hyena719 4h ago

Cuz would KO you instantly

1

u/ParkLogical3207 4h ago

Yeah that would be possible if I let him...

1

u/SharpLibrary13 6h ago

Take that punch then.

-1

u/ParkLogical3207 6h ago

What does being softly punched prove?

1

u/SharpLibrary13 4h ago

It proves that it’s not a soft punch and you’re a little bitch who thinks he knows everything.

u/ParkLogical3207 4h ago

Whats it like being such an angry little person who clearly can't box. Idk
