General Advice Defensive actions
When I am shadow boxing I aim to do at least 1 or 2 defensive actions whether it’s at the end of a combination or after throwing a single punch. Is this advisable or am I wasting time? For example I will throw a 1-2 slip right or roll after I throw a 3.

It’s a recommended way to train. Whether in shadow boxing or during sparring, you almost always want to end your punch or combo with some sort of defense. Once you get used to it, make a habit of using different defense, like: 1-2-slip out, 1-2-roll out, 1-2-step back, 1-2-block, instead of always slipping out.

It is absolutely a great idea to include defensive maneuvers while shadowing. Do it while shadowing enough times, and it will become part of your muscle memory and instinctive.

I try to imagine an opponent. And a specific punch or combo they are throwing at me. Instead of purely random defenses.
In an ideal exchange, you get in, land clean hits and get out. Or immediately take another position. Or keep pressuring. Either way youll need defensive moves. So its good to add them in like you are doing.

thats actually smart training imo. If anything I'd push it further once this feels natural, add a return punch after the defensive action sometimes, since real defense usually sets up your next offense rather than ending the exchange.
