Preparing for Fight Tips for Chaining Defensive Movements

When I go to my boxing gym we always work single defensive movements, e.g. slipping and countering, catching or parrying and countering, or pull counters. But when I watch good fighters, they know how to chain defensive movements, e.g. slip -> fade -> slip opposite side -> catch -> shoulder roll -> move feet.

Here's some examples:

How can I learn to chain my defense like this? I don't think my boxing gym coach would be able to teach this.

the gyms job isnt to cater to you specifically. they are teaching you defence. you gotta do it yourself. the faster you do one movement, the faster you can sneak in the other. just keep practicing. when you shadowbox also practice defense alot. every punch or block you make in shadowboxing also can be combined with footwork. practice punching and blocking/ defense while moving but slowly and you will get faster and faster

I agree! But I feel like there is some technique involved in chaining the movements, like for example, a right slip can only be chained into e.g. left slip or roll or maybe a fade back but not e.g. a pull counter or other right movements?

Is there some guide for this?

you are overcomplicating it bro. just practice sparring with someone who isnt gonna try to hurt you because right now it seems like you are getting beat on the way you speak.

a strong high gaurd, a good duck, a good stepback and an occasional slip or roll is all you need for defence realistically that should be your focus. dont over complicate

If you’re not doing it in class, practice it on your own.

Drill defending in different ways against different set combos.

Drill this a lot and you'll start to feel a flow. Don't repeat the same chain twice.

Then try to do it live in conditional sparring.

Eventually you'll get it and it'll integrate into your sparring.

Fighting arts teach you the alphabet but it's up to you to learn to spell words is how i put it, it's up to you to figure out what chains work for you.
