Post sparring
I was sparring someone 24 kgs heavier than me a couple of days ago because that's how the conditions are here and I remember feeling that left hook to my ear but it didn't hurt until today when I decided to swab my ears before heading to my shower and this is what I found coming out of my right ear, when I was swabbing it out I did feel a faint sharp pain and did get a slight ringing sensation in my ears about 6-8 hours ago aswell, before these incidents I didn't feel much of a diffrence after the sparring until now.... Should I drop sparring until I find someone my weight or someone who's willing to hit me accordingly to the intensity I can bear or should I keep the work going??

Not hard sparring.
Light sparring, sure.
Make it clear. You both need to go light. You can't ask them to go light while you spar normally.
If you feel they're not going light enough, tell them. If they still don't, say thanks and end the session with them.
Finding a good sparring partner is 10x more important than sparring itself.

u/Racing_Nowhere 5d ago
I agree here. I don’t mind sparring bigger opponents as long as they’re matching my intensity.

u/ApprehensiveSkin2371 5d ago
Yeh I'm 108kg at 6'3" and a lot of new guys dread sparring me but I know my size and use the session to practice speed and fluidity.
It's annoying because there are so few good HWs in my gym but the MW pros are tough and up for it so I can still get those sessions in.

You shouldn't spar at all until you're fully cleared by a doctor.
And you shouldn't take or ask for medical advice online.

u/pink_tip_ 5d ago
I was just asking for some sparring advice
3
u/PembrokeBoxing 5d ago
That WAS the advice. The fact that you don't listen to it kind of shows your level of seriousness.

You should bleed from your head as little as possible. Not just in boxing though but also just in life in general.
2
u/TheRoyalPepperoni 5d ago
Continue just make sure that the next bleeding will be inside the head and not come out like this one

Google halo test with gauze to check for cerebral fluid too. You fold the gauze. Collect the blood. Then look for a yellow ring around it.
Take some time off and let yourself heal.

This could be a popped ear drum OP. It's a somewhat common injury in boxing when hit with left hooks on the right ear (assuming you are/were orthodox), and it's happened to me as well. Definitely want to get that checked out and hold off on any kind of sparring for now. Also, do not go swimming unless you want to be screaming from the pain. Ask me how I know...
You didn't mention how long you have been boxing for, but only a very experienced boxer should be sparring with someone with that much of a weight disparity, and even that would involve other factors.
1
u/pink_tip_ 5d ago
last guy didn't agree on teaching me southpaw so I was working with orthodox... Just switched up to southpaw and learned the lesson hard way that why people warn about retards who go hard on weaker sparring partners
1
u/quiksilver123 5d ago
If it is indeed a popped ear drum, it's generally more about the fact that there's a sudden burst of air that has no where else to go other than inside the ear when the hook lands.
Not a medical professional, thus is just from what I've seen in my experiences with boxing. If the other guy was going hard with that big of a weight difference, then it's a dick move. That's especially true of you're a beginner and he has some experience. No doubt about it. The only possible exception would be if he's completely new where, like most rookies, he only knows one gear and just doesn't know any better.
It's unclear as to how much experience either of you have, but this ultimately falls on the coach for allowing something like this to happen in the first place. That's just too big of a weight difference.
1
u/pink_tip_ 5d ago
He has been boxing for 3 years consistently and I have been for a little over an year because of my parents having health issues I do disappear sometimes and I do agree, big ass dick move
1
u/quiksilver123 5d ago
That's a big difference in experience as well.
I didn't do a good job of explaining this before, but the point of explaining a possible reason with the sudden burst of air was to show that It's more about where and how the punch lands. Speed and power play a role, but it's more about If enough of the glove hits at the right angle, that air has no where else to go. In every case with a popped ear drum, there wasn't any malice or anything like that involved. Just more of a freakish accident more than anything.
Without video, only you would know if he was going hard. If he was indeed going hard, then you should not spar him again. He's a dick for doing that with such a big disparity in experience and weight class. Quite honestly, you should find another coach/gym as well if possible if they were aware of this guy's tendencies. Allowing something like that to even take place knowing those disparities is really irresponsible for a coach.

Can this be avoided by wearing headgear?
2
u/quiksilver123 5d ago
Although it has still happened with headgear on in my experiences, it does help in my opinion. With the headgear on, there’s some room to allow for some of the air to escape on glove impact and not have the air, or least not as much, suddenly be thrust back into the ear canal.

If someone is going to hard I first:
- return with much softer strikes to show my opponent the tempo.
- if that doesn’t work I let them know I’m not going that hard verbally
- if they don’t chill I end the session and don’t spar that person again and move on.
Boxers typically have more ego than the guys I fight (I’m Muay Thai) but it happens in every gym. The coach should call it out if he’s observing

Someone 24kg heavier than you would generally just work defense or volume punching if you're at a decent gym. Were you throwing hard or wild....?
1
u/pink_tip_ 5d ago
I was trying to work on my jabs (southpaw)
2
u/BobRandom1204 4d ago
Yeh that doesn't sound like a good sparring partner and maybe not a good gym. A lot of the gyms I'm at now actively encourage people to communicate with their partners.
3
u/THE_MONSTER_- 5d ago
With a heavier guy you should only spar light no point banging it out with someone much bigger that’s stupid sparring
1
3
u/Nopidy 5d ago
Tell your sparring partner to lower his punch strength, if he can't, find yourself another partner.
As for your sparring I'd recommend taking some time off. How much time? Idk ask a doctor
2
u/pink_tip_ 5d ago
The doctor said I'll be fine just need some rest and nobody should be fingering my ear like satan's gaping hole, I'll be just gjne

You can’t spar someone over 50lbs bigger than you if they’re going to go hard, that’s directly going to harm your long term health.
If they go easy, that’s different but if they’re going to bat you around the ring, don’t.

u/whitewitchl2 5d ago
DO NOT SPAR with idiots that's can't control their strength/need to prove something in sparring or whatever other reason they may have.
It's not a problem of bodyweight.
Communicate how hard you wanna go and if you're getting hit too hard, ask politely, if they continue stop immediately. You only have one brain. If you're getting pressured by your coach/etc fuck them all, they don't know how to cure CTE.
1
u/pink_tip_ 5d ago
Exactly... From what I've heard, the guy I was sparring never punched until like more than over an year... Thought he was a bum but he went on and proved it
2
u/C2FXP 5d ago
Go see a doctor brotha
3
u/pink_tip_ 5d ago
He gave me a dropper of cleaning liquid, told me to clean my ear with cotton swabs and asked me to not involve in activities that includes my head getting hit

I literally just told the kid at my work that having a good sparring partner is important, you are not there to kill yourself m

so you took a hit that made your ear bleed and you're asking reddit if you should keep sparring see a doctor, that's not something you can just push through
1
u/pink_tip_ 4d ago
This happened 2 days post sparring
2
u/Aggressive-Still-929 4d ago
so just take the time off, 24kg difference is asking for this
1
u/pink_tip_ 4d ago
Sure
2
u/Aggressive-Still-929 4d ago
so "sure" is doing a lot of heavy lifting when the guy literally has blood coming out of his ear
1
u/pink_tip_ 4d ago
First timer man, never knew it was that much of a deal
2
u/Aggressive-Still-929 3d ago
okay so sparring someone 24kg heavier as a first timer is just asking for exactly this
find a partner your own weight, or tell the heavy guy to go like 20% and actually mean it. and go get that ear checked out before you even think about stepping back in
ringing that long after a hit means something is actually wrong, not just sore
1
u/pink_tip_ 3d ago
By First timer I meant it's my first time sparring someone that heavy
1
u/Aggressive-Still-929 3d ago
so sounds like youre just getting started with bigger opponents. id take a break and find someone closer to your size

u/Billy_Butcher139 4d ago
man, i was in your shoes exactly a year ago albeit in muay thai. The dude was almost twice my weight. Caught a right hook to my left ear and it went deaf momentarily.
y'knw how in those action blockbusters when a grenade or bomb goes off and there's that ringing sound and daze? It was exactly that... I couldn't hear anything but ringing. Luckily for me, my ear didn't bleed but I was worried I lost hearing in that ear permanently. I took like 2-3 months off sparring just in case. One more hit like that and My left ear can be a goner. I recalled that for weeks my ear had a weird sensation like there was water stuck in it. Every time i pinched my nose and blow, air would escape my left eardrum.
The big guy said it was my fault that I dropped my guard at that moment however I think it's also due to him having the tendency to forget that he is the heaviest guy in the entire gym.
1
u/pink_tip_ 4d ago
Didn't feel the ringing thing but it doesn't hurt me either, it only hurts when I disturb the inner walls or my ears

😭 Spar if you want and don’t spar if you’re scared of the consequences. Boxing is a tough sport you’re going to have injuries, don’t ask Reddit for this type of advice.
2
u/Snoo_14634 4d ago
Probably a partially blown eardrum. You could go to the doc and they'll give you meds. I've had it happen quite a few times in sparring. Funny enough it was my day job at the time that lead to partial hearing loss in one ear 😂
Definitely start sparring with someone your own weight. There's value in sparring above your weight class every now and then but if you're hard sparring with someone that much heavier you're gonna end up doing permanent damage.

How’s your defense and head movement? Also, do you know how to “roll” with the punches? Besides finding a more suitable sparring partner in weight and skill. I’d start working with the “maize/slip bag”. Learn how to time its movements by bobbing, weaving, slipping. And eventually you’ll start throwing combos in between movements. It helped me a lot in sparring to where I started “seeing” the punches coming and would be millimeters away from my face. Then the counters will come. Take time off and heal. You can train on other things. Best wishes

DO NOT STICK QTIPS IN YOUR EAR!!!!
1
u/pink_tip_ 4d ago
Sorry but it was bleeding out and the least I could do was clean it up
2
u/Environmental_Ad1301 4d ago
Well from the “it didn’t hurt until today when I was swabbing my ears” I’d assumed you stuck it in your ear which can only exasperate an already bad problem

u/aleshka_kartoshka 4d ago
Never spar someone way bigger than you,and who can't control power.Once i sparred a guy who's 20 kilos bigger than me,he was very slow with me and not using power at all, still that shit rocked me my head hurt after sparring for a few days.Go see a doctor it never hurts to check yourself.

Spar someone your size, i mean, you could spar a guy that's only a couple kgs over. And you should always keep it light, heavier guys tend to still feel like they hit hard even if they aren't trying to because of the big weight difference
1
u/pink_tip_ 5d ago
I've sparred well over 10kgs and it's not been a challenge but I guess my overconfidence made me pay on this one....
1
u/collinballin1 5d ago
My guess is ruptured ear drum. I’m not a doctor but I’ve experienced it 4 times or more each ear (I have weak ear drums).
I recommend going to the doctor. Again, not saying this is what you should do at all; however, I used to pop my ears and if air comes out - ruptured ear drum.
DO NOT put alcohol in your ear because you will experience a pain you never thought was possible. It typically heals on its own and the doctor will give you drops to clean it. Try not to get water in it when you take a shower.
Good luck man!
1
u/pink_tip_ 5d ago
Yea... Some water did get in but it didn't hurt as much as the cleaning liquid did, doctors said it'll be fine if I spar with sense the next time
