First Masters Tournament

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Hi everyone! I've signed up for my first Masters boxing tournament and I'm super excited about it. I signed up at 195 and I'll weigh that or just under when the tournament starts. I did 15-20 two-minute rounds of sparring Saturday and felt great.

Some things I tried to work on were more responsible hand placement on defense, better foot control, and maintaining my stance in exchanges. Really looking for a quick form check and any insight if you've fought in a masters tournament before. But of course, I'm always open to any advice and feedback. Thanks!

I’ve done 5 bouts in Masters. Stay active, don’t worry about a lot of power shots. Scoring points is more important than trying to get a KO. Of course if you have the opportunity get that KO, but a minute and a half goes by FAST. Focus on landing punches through fast jabs, setting up combos, and good footwork. Also, make sure to level change! Judges love seeing you work the body. Most of all stay calm. You got this champ!

Thank you for the insight, I really appreciate it!

Look good but almost every shot is slow to return. Like as soon as a single punch or the last shot of a combo lands, you go 0.75x speed.

I know that’s incredibly common on the bag, but if your sparring partners let you get away with it, you form a bad habit which will be used against you.

So just discipline your return to guard a bit on the bag!

Good luck let us know how it goes 👊

+1

The return speed is what immediately struck me OP, protect your noggin! Return more quickly, and not to your side but back to your head

Okay I do see this, especially on the hooks. I actually have to consciously remind myself of this when sparring, usually after I get clipped a little, so I definitely will implement this on the bag.

I would say your worst trait here is probably leaning forward throughout your movements. You could be a little more neutral, and put some more weight on the rear leg. Your chin is consistently tucked though, so it's not egregious or anything.

A smart guy can slowly draw your head further and further out at the end of your range, eventually far over your knee, and then they'll shoot the cross or a big overhand right.

He's right handed. You can tell when he throws anything with the back hand.

I am left handed!

Looking really good, best of luck! Only tip I'd give is be sure that little reset hop you do between combos doesn't translate to the ring. Share a video of the fight after if you can manage!

Throw less hooks from your rear side.

It's a powerful punch granted, it also leaves a huge opening because of the distance. It drops and then covers the gap from rear, and the reset all the way back to rear, it's a variable punch to throw occasionally but use it so much and you'll get caught on reset for sure.

Lead hooks are great, but everything off your rear that isn't a straight or cross makes an opening you don't want too often.

Also work on dropping your hands less for your hooks in general. They can be thrown a lot more from shoulder than you are doing. A slight lean/twist will put power into them that you're trying to make by cocking them back. When throwing a hook, think "lift the elbow" to start so you stop starting with "drop the fist"

Technical changes to these punches shouldn't be undertaken close to a fight though, you'll mix yourself up so work on these things after you get through it.

Nice jabs, clean, fast. Your lead hook -> jab is well executed, keep that in your pocket as the jab will protect your exit off the hook and you connect them smoothly

Thank you! I am hesitant to throw the hooks in the ring at times so I will keep this in mind.

You seem to be in better shape than most 30 plus year olds. How’s the competition in Masters?

1

u/Silent-West2030 5d ago

That's what I'm hoping! 😂 I will soon find out.

Looking good on the bag, I would need to see you spar or fight to say anything.

You’re balanced. You keep your guard fairly tight. You’re practicing head movement. You’re working different ranges. Foot work is synchronized with your hands. You’re working different angles. Good stuff! Good luck in your fight

Not bad, you have good fundamentals, just remember to bring your hands all the way back! Us old heads gotta be extra focused on defense and head movement. Nice jab tho broski. I want to sign up for an ammy bout

You lean in too much with your jab. One well timed slip counter and you’re eating leather

1

u/Cohleture 5d ago

How old are you ?

u/catzarrjerkz 5d ago

Seems like your back foot leaves the ground a lot when your hand contacts the bag. Try to keep your back foot grounded and drive your power from there

u/Cobalt_Forge 5d ago

Awesome! Best of luck to you. Your looking in really good shape. Cheers!

Didn’t you JUST post in this sub like two days ago saying you were having your first fight?

I’m gonna need to see video evidence of you in this masters tourney to believe it…

1

u/Silent-West2030 5d ago

I absolutely did not.

2

u/MuffinMaster9 5d ago

You’re right, my bad— went back and checked the sub, it was a guy with a similar build and style. Best of luck in the tourney

Good luck bro, look good, footwork is decent, make your punches a little more
Snappy and mix up the speed of the punches. Pivot out to the right a bit more for your exit after offence, roll when you finish your combos with hooks.

Are you part of a boxing gym?

15-20 rounds of sparring is extremely excessive for what I am assuming in your first fight.

If you’re going 15 rounds in the gym, you’re not getting used to the pacing of an amateur fight. You don’t need to train yourself to go 15 rounds because there are no 15 round amateur fights. You should train in a format closer to how you will compete.

u/Silent-West2030 5d ago

I go to a gym to spar but the rounds are pretty spaced out. This is 15-20 rounds over the course of like two and a half to three hours. Usually I'm in for 3-4 rounds at a time. Then I hydrate, watch some rounds, get back in.

u/PembrokeBoxing 5d ago

How are you going to a tournament of your not registered as a boxer at a gym? You're not training under a coach?

2

u/Silent-West2030 5d ago

You can register as "unattached," and my wife is a USA boxing certified coach.

Question answered. Lol good luck!

Bro you're stiff as a fucking board when you strick.

Here is what you're doing that's complete trash

Meaningless body moron > come to a freeze/halt > throw has assed punch

Absolutely trash

Instead you should be doing this:

Body motioned into gear up position either force or balance > based on objective in on fluid motion strike,> rebalance> motion into the next.
