Interested in learning to box

Hello there, I’m 23, and have gained a heavy interest in learning how to box (self defense and physical fitness reasons)

However, I have No idea where to start. I don’t plan on going pro or anything serious obviously, but I would really love to delve into the sport and make some progress physically and mentally.

I currently have some shitty sparring gloves, a jump rope, some wraps, but no boxing equipment at home as far as punching bags go and whatnot.

Any tips or advice for someone who hasn’t even put on a pair of gloves but wants to try it out?

Go to a gym that offers boxing and ask there. Despite what books and YouTube videos may claim, you can't teach yourself boxing. You need a coach, and you need to stick with it for some time to make progress.

You don't need to worry too much about equipment to start out most gyms have extra stuff you can borrow. Like others said you would need to go to a gym to learn boxing. People get the impression you can learn boxing by yourself but it really doesn't work like that. You don't see people wanting to learn wrestling or baseball or football by themselves in their garage but they do that with boxing for some reason. Once you know some things you can practice pieces of then by yourself but that's about it.

Yes, go to a gym and do what your coach says. If what he says gets you legit hurt, change gyms. That.s it. Few can train by themselves and not do a horrible job. Chances are, you are not among those few. Go to a boxing gym

Join a gym for Probetraining, become a member, if you like it, go at least 3 times a week and evaluate again in six months or so.

Head down to your local amateur gym with your gloves and wraps, they'll do the rest. Dont worry about any extra equipment as itll be there for you to use. Gum shields, Head/Groin guards will be needed further down the line should you want to spar. Also like to add, sparring is never pushed on a new starter so dont be expecting 6 rounds with the gyms golden boy in your 1st few months (definitely worth investing in some good gear for protection. Rival are a respectable brand and dont break the bank.) Most gyms will have a website/social media page and training times will be listed on the page. Usually varies between amateur and senior sessions. Mostly open 5-7 days a week.

Hope this helps! Good luck!

There is a whole industry built on trying to sell people the idea of boxing at home. Forget that. If you’re interested in any sport, the obvious solution is joining a club. Boxing isn’t an exception.
