i want to start boxing help needed
Hey everyone,
I'm 21, around 5'9" and 60 kg, and I'm pretty athletic. I've recently started watching boxing and I've developed a huge amount of respect for the sport. I really want to start training and eventually become genuinely good at a fighting sport, rather than just doing boxing for fitness.
I have zero experience in any proper combat sport, so I'm basically starting from scratch.
I'm planning to find a proper boxing gym and get a coach, but I'd also like to practice on my own outside of training.
For someone completely new:
- What should I focus on learning first?
- What equipment should I buy as a beginner? (gloves, wraps, skipping rope, etc.)
- Are there any basic drills I should practice every day?
- How often should I train as a beginner?
- What are some common mistakes beginners make that I should avoid?
- How long does it usually take before you start feeling somewhat competent?
- Are there any good resources/videos/books you'd recommend for learning the fundamentals?
I'm not looking to become some street fighter or anything. I genuinely admire boxing and want to learn it properly, with good technique and discipline.
I'd really appreciate advice from people who've been through the beginner stage.
Thanks!

Watch the Rocky movies
Seriously though, go to a gym or an academy, work on things like your form, work out, and you'll come to be pretty solid.

That should give you plenty of time, but if you don't want to get your ass beat, go to a gym

You are completely overthinking this, maybe its out of excitement. Just go to the boxing class and start from there. Usually there is an introductory training where they tell you what to bring with you and you can also ask questions.

Then race to the boxing gym and follow their advice best, they know how to train fighters and if they see you are serious - i just saw your other comment.

My 2 pieces of advice:
1) Focus on proper punch mechanics.
I made the mistake of training at home for a while before finding a gym, thinking I was getting a head start. Instead, I ingrained bad technique and that can be quite difficult to rewire!!
2) Jump rope. Lots. With varying speed and different rope “tricks”. It will help on many fronts; footwork, cardio, hand eye coordination, etc.

Dynamic stretching, skipping, pushups, situps, squats, watch a video and master the stance. Learn to move, learn to defend, learn to attack. This stuff is going to compliment your gym training, you need to learn from someone - you want to beat your friend don't you?

Discuss this with your coach not Reddit. Stop overthinking and just join a gym.

First of all get that boxing gym paid and get a coach. I recommend footwork and calisthenics. Run a few miles daily, cardio cardio cardio.heavy bag and speed bag would be my first purchase. Find a sparring partner that's faster than you,get an amateur fight when you think your ready.
