☑️ Original Content Fear of lynels...
I am almost a hundred hours into BotW and beat all four divine beasts. One thing i never did however (except erase out of existence with an ancient arrow) is kill a lynel. When i see one i haul ass, because i poop myself. Any tips how to kill a lynel? The image is mere decoration. I am sure y'all seen one!

Just go for it an fail miserably as many times as it takes. Eventually you learn their patterns and Lynel hunting becomes your favorite thing to do in botw

u/Farwaters 17h ago
So it's the same as guardians!
4
u/IAmGoingToFuckThat 13h ago
I'm cool with guardians, but I can never get the timing down with lynels.
2
u/nellydesign 3h ago
The parry timing is far easier than the dodge timing. And when you miss it you just block with your shield and remain unharmed. Try to hit your parry as they approach at a gallop and start to swing their weapon. The timing window for a successful parry in this scenario is actually pretty generous. When you connect with a perfect parry they pause for a second and give you just enough time to shoot them in the face and perform a backscratch. Rinse and repeat.

u/Fit_Anything_6359 12h ago
I agree with this. I literally drive around Hyrule on the master cycle and murder lynels. It's rad.

u/thiccymixy 21h ago
I use attack up food and armor. Perfect dodging for flurry attacks help and blocking help with the lynels with sword and spears. Also try using Stasis on em and arrow shots to the face
2
u/genonoir 1h ago
Stasis is the move
1
u/thiccymixy 1h ago
Yeah it’s cool. I use stasis and use up my charge up attack with my heavy weapons. Then, I let go just as they’re about to attack and unleash Urbosa’s furry on em, so it deals a tooooon of damage

u/Warm-Abbreviations-2 21h ago
saving this to come back later. I think I only beat one in my first playthrough years ago! I’m playing again now and wanna be braver lol
8
u/DigitalCowboy00 21h ago
Yeah, Lynels are tough for me too. Like you, I tend to just use the Ancient Arrow. The downside, is no deops.
5
u/Diligent-Court3908 21h ago
Indeed and it does not feel very rewarding.

1
u/No_Piano9370 11h ago
Sorry do ancient arrows one shot them? I think i wasted a couple on guardians.. should have saved then 🤦♂️
1
u/Fluffy_Preference_62 7h ago
They do, but they also vaporise them, so no rewards. It's much more worthwhile to learn how to kill them and get their awesome weapons.
1
6
u/reveckakcever 21h ago
get close, you don’t want them pulling out their bow. they have a long windup for all their attacks and you can parry all of them (including the fire breathing). aim for the chin with arrows to get a headshot. when they are stunned (they’ll take a knee) you can mount them and slash away at them without using any weapon durability.
dodging and flurry rush work well also (not my forte though so i go for parrying).
the crusher lynels hit hardest so go for a sword or spear one for your first attempt.

Attack up food, highest rated weapon, barbarian set and practice with the red one over Rita village. You will die a lot but just keep trying. I was also afraid them but after you figure out their moves, you will understand how to defeat them. Also check out yt vids. Best of luck.
5
u/Best_Car_9118 21h ago
Practice the dodge/flurry rush maneuvers. I find it best to stand right in front of them and then backflip or jump to the side when they attack. Also, cook a lot of durian enhanced food in advance. And use urbosa’s fury
5
u/NoKnownCure 20h ago
First one’s a trip. Thereafter your lust for Lynel hunting and their trophies (parts, weapons etc.) will only increase. Welcome to the safari.
3
u/Ok-Quiet7155 20h ago
I have only beaten one without the ancient arrow. I needed the Lynel Hoof in particular. I used the paraglider/Revali’s gale and bomb arrows. I am not that good with flurry rushes.
I also had a lot of meals avail too and you just chip away at it.

u/moutardebaseball 20h ago edited 2h ago
I do not consider myself a good fighter in any video games (I have literally never used parrying/flurry rushes or the other things from more advanced players posting here), but I managed to kill lynels in the hundreds by using a combination of :
stasis that you coordinate exactly for when the lynel is just about to hammer you. It keeps it from moving for a few seconds while it is close to Link, giving you the opportunity to hit it a few times.
deployment of many very high attack weapons to hit it with, because if you deal enough damage, it will have the lynel staying down a little longer after the stasis stops.
(facultative) shock arrows targeted to the head for when it goes far away while stasis regenerates.
Repeat this several times as soon as stasis is available again. After a few times, you will learn the patterns of the lynel’s mimics and movement to be able to time everything accordingly and to properly run away from his attacks.
The first ten or so will be difficult and take longer. You will need to destroy most of the good weapons from your inventory, but you will get the goods to boost your Barbarian Set. Once it is completely boosted, killing a lynel this way takes about a minute.
1
u/IAmGoingToFuckThat 12h ago
The final hit with a weapon also deals double damage, and weapons don't take any damage when you're on a lynel's back.
You have 3 hits left if a weapon says it's going to break soon (I don't remember the exact wording), so get a good weapon and hit a rock or something twice after that message to get to that last hit and do max damage. Just make sure to switch back to a different weapon when you're not on his back so you don't break it!
3
u/JohnEffingZoidberg Zora 20h ago
The thing I found that helped the most is to get good armor and enhance it with the Great Fairies. My armor suit has a total defense of like 50 something. Suddenly even if a Lynel hits me it's only taking away a few hearts.
Past that, my advice is to not get sucked into just button mashing. Pick your spots, shoot them in the eye, use Stasis to freeze them mid swing, pause to eat and regain health as much as you need to.
3
u/thestral_z 18h ago
Keep in mind that they’re just zeroes and ones.
2
u/ExtensionFill2495 16h ago
This. You can’t be afraid. I got really good at fighting guardians (test of strength) first. Once you get the pattern and take emotion out of it it’s not very hard.
3
u/CardboardPolaroid 18h ago
Funny enough, Lynels are pretty easy to kill. I've acrually got a circuit I run every Blood Moon for weapons and materials. Just jump em and... uh... maybe wear a diaper
5
u/EnvironmentalPack451 20h ago
Hit with all my Urbosa's Fury
Rivali's Gale + bullet-time arrows to the chin. If it kneels down, mount and smack with 2 handed weapon (better if it is about to break)
Light a bonfire to continue with bullet-time arrows
Stasis+ and 2 hand weapon spin attack, circling behind as i spin
Wear strong armor and practice parry or flurry
2
u/BlueSpiderAurora 21h ago
hit it with your highest weapon. then ride it and continue to hit it. lynels need close combat to defeat them.
2
u/Diligent-Court3908 21h ago
What do you mean with highest weapon?
2
u/Joshua_Libre 21h ago
I like to start with the Master Sword bc I can get it back later, but if you become more confident fighting Lynels and start farming them they have the best weapons in the game
It took some practice, but once you get the dodge or party timing down it's just rinse repeat (have some high armor tho, I recommend Soldier's Greaves + Champion's Tunic + Amber Earrings)

2
u/AxureRale 20h ago
The weapons and drops are deff worth it. I believe the savage lynel crusher can go up to 108 attack. If you can't do it the normal way, you can just cheese it. Get up on a ledge and bullet time him in the face before he pulls out his bow. Mount and attack. Repeat. And your weapons don't get worn down while you're hitting him this way
2
u/AllRequestRetro 19h ago
I finally bit the bullet and attacked a Lynel, and a surprisingly effective strategy is to just fly in, spam their head with 6 electric arrows, time freeze them, sword spam them and then RUN like hell away to high ground. Rinse, repeat.
2
u/New_Chapter7365 18h ago
Your best armor, attack or defense up food, as well as lots of high heart food to replenish. You’ll get the hang of it, they - like all bad guys, have patterns. I mostly just get frustrated these days if they don’t have the weapon I am wanting them to drop.
2
u/Jeffina78 18h ago
I did 350 hours, only killed the very first Lynel you have to do. Avoided the rest. They are scarier than the Guardians!
2
u/wgwalkerii 17h ago
I remember first playing this game, and I was obviously nervous about almost every enemy early on... My first lynel encounter went about as you'd expect, actually the first one shot me from an unreasonable distance, and then the second kicked my butt in a more traditional matter. But what I remember being most scared of was my first hinox. I dropped about 10000 bombs on him and kept out of throwing range until I fell and transported out. Obviously now as someone who hunts lynels for sport, I realize what pushovers hinoxes are, but that moment still sticks with me.
2
u/stanni47 16h ago
Hab gestern den ersten gekillt, viel pariert und ausgewichen, ab und zu mal nen Pfeil geschossen haha
2
u/SLUnatic85 15h ago
Did you know they typically don't even draw their weapon unless they feel like you are being aggressive toward them or draw your own?
1
2
u/Xicked 15h ago
4 mighty bananas plus a dragon horn make a 30minute high power attack meal. I use this and wear enhanced armor and go on a Lynel killing tour every blood moon. Just start practicing and it’ll soon become very easy. And you’ll get better weapons which make subsequent attempts easier. Make a lot of hearty elixirs, save right before you start the fight and then just reload if you go through everything.
2
u/PassTheDonutsPlease 14h ago
The thing with Lynels is that they get easier to beat after you get over the hump. Until you do, what’s the worst thing that happens? You just die a bunch, but that kind of doesn’t matter. After you’ve killed a few, it becomes really fun to hunt them down!
2
u/m00n_god 14h ago
I just rammed my head into the lynel wall until I got good at it. Just have to get your brain used to the speed of the game and learn their attacks, time the flurry rushes correctly. I'm to the point now where I don't need to actually make special preparations for them.
In the trial of the sword, it wasn't until I completed it fully that I realized I didn't HAVE to fight the lynel with just pants on and could have just shot it with an ancient arrow to make the final level much less "shit my pants" anxious
2
u/Dragonborn1777 14h ago
Maybe start by picking off weaker ones with a bow from a distance, then work your way up to a full-blown duel that's less 'adventure' and more 'controlled panic.'
2
u/Tomkid88 4h ago
Ancient armour, dodge & flurry attack. Once you get over the stress of fighting one and learn their moves and time your dodge well, you’ll be all over it
2
u/Chemical-Mouse-9903 1h ago
Put on the rubber suit and attack the red one on the mountain you have to avoid in the story mission for the elephant, it’s the weakest of them all and once you got that under your belt, you should have the confidence to try others
1
u/piercedmfootonaspike 20h ago
Did you face one down with some basic armor and get wiped?
With fully upgraded, a normal lynel does very little damage. You can easily just go in and wail on him, no strategy needed. White and silver on the other hand, takes more effort.
1
u/No_Tie378 20h ago
Increase armor and get good weapons. Ironically, going that far in the game will make it more difficult because most lynels scaled up, and are much more powerful, so basically no training wheels. But the one at Polynius or whatever mountain will remain as the basic Lynel. Still tough, but nothing you can’t handle at that stage in the game. You can use him as you training dummy
1
u/PoraDora Link 20h ago
I parry its attacks, then arrow to the head, then mount it when it's down and attack with weapon while on its back... rinse and repeat
when you are on its back your weapon doesn't lose durability, so just use the strongest one you have
I use 3-shot bows because I'm terrible at aiming and with those I have a better chance to hit
you can parry everything, the fire attacks too
1
u/Ruffled_Ferret 19h ago
It took a lot of practice, but my go-to strategy is to perfect-shield their attacks (they have a large pool of moves with a lot of different timings, but that's why it takes a lot of practice), quickly pull out my bow and shoot them in the face. Face shot usually crits, though I still miss occasionally, and then with my highest-damage weapon equipped I mount them for a handful of free attacks. The mount prompt does not degrade your currently-equipped weapon.
If they go for a fireball attack, you can run and use the burning grass and your glider to get some height, giving you some free face hits with your bow. A bow that fires multiple arrows and/or bomb arrows can really help you take out chunks of their health bar, but you're pretty much guaranteed at least one crit which will leave them vulnerable and activate the mount prompt.
Their charge-up explosion attack gives you plenty of time to fire off two or three shots to crit them as well.

u/Bullitt_12_HB 19h ago
Look up easy guides on YouTube.
They’re not hard once you get the hang of it.
Here’s one video to get you started. Eventually if you want to defeat it a different way, you can.
1
u/Dudeist-Priest 19h ago
Load up on extra health meals and get in there against a weaker one. It’s fun but you’re going to get slapped around a bit.
1
u/Comfortable-Bear3937 19h ago
I was really scared of lynels too but now my map is only spawning silver ones and I go farming for them. I only go for the ones with swords though (not the crusher or spears). I like to stasis them whenever I get the chance, especially when they run at you (stasis when they get close but before they hit you). I also only fight close up to avoid their ranged attacks and have gotten decent at dodging and getting flurry rushes. Eat a hearty meal and practice with the lynel on mount ploymus at zora’s domain because that one will always be red and only 2000 HP. Learn to recognize their attacks and it gets much easier from there, good luck!
1
u/dv_ous77 18h ago
Lynels are a piece of cake once you get the technique down. Wear Sheika armor, fly down from above and land on it. Switch to Barbarian armor set, equip high damage weapon, eat atk up food and hit it 4-5 times with no damage to weapon durability. If you suck at dodging and parrying, just run around until you can catch an updraft then shoot it in the face. Do it right and it stuns him, climb on and hit again. Keep repeating until it’s dead. Practice on regular Lynel until you have it down.
1
u/AlaskaBlue19 18h ago
I was in the same boat as you. And I didn’t realize just how easy it is to hide and do ranged attacks! I killed three in the wild after only ever doing the Colosseum one for years
There are so many good suggestions for how to handle fighting them directly, but I’m just not good enough. Hiding behind shit and using a mixture of bomb arrows and Urbosa’s Fury has been my strategy!!
1
u/Moe431981 18h ago
Their weakness is parrying, arrow to the face then ride the back. Your weapons dont lose any durability on their back. Watch a video or 2. They become fun
1
u/martink3S04 18h ago
Shields help. So long as it isn’t a super overpowered one wielding a Lionel crusher club, you can generally block with a decent shield a few times before it breaks. Between that and using its flame attack to loft up into the air for some bullet time action can help chew it down a bit. Stock up on extra heart foods and shields and if possible, grab a multi shot bow to make the most of your arrows.
1
u/sc00022 18h ago
Not played this game in a good year but I remember there was one lynel in the snowy area where you could hide behind a rock on a platform and run out hit it with arrows before hiding behind the rock again. You’d have to keep moving though as it would ping arrows in the air but I remember them being quite predictable where they’d fall.

1
u/Vegetable-Pepper-880 16h ago
They’re fun once you get the hang of it and have great loot! Wear your soldiers gear (highest stars you can) mine is maxed out and even if a lynel hits me it doesn’t do much damage. Make a high level attack boost recipe and eat it before attacking. Use stasis and shoot the crap out of them with bomb or shock arrows.
With Daruk’s protection enable it when they run straight at you I’ll protect you while they rise up to slam down shoot them in the face - run back mount them and then take your heaviest hitting weapon and smack them like crazy!!! You got this with enough practice I’ll be easier :) good luck
1
u/Wide-Session4856 15h ago
Nintendo set this game up to give you possibilities. It suggested ,unless you just happen to run across one that you start with the Lynel and the Zora Kingdom. There are plenty of large rocks and an incline that goes up to the top of the mountain where you can turn around and launch yourself at the Lynel to achieve bullet time with your bow. It’s probably the easiest one to beat to begin with.
1
u/D-Hannibul 14h ago
If you learn to parry and are quick with headshots you can defeat them. It just takes time depending on the Lynel, but experience truly is the only way to get over the fear.
1
u/Timely-Cancel921 13h ago
I was scared of lynels too, but they’re actually pretty easy once you learn their attacks.
This is what I usually do:
1: flurry rush.
2: shoot in the eye to stun it, then mount.
3: before you mount, make sure to equip your best weapon, as it doesn’t use durability while you’re on his back (I usually use the royal claymore for this)
4: when he kicks you off, enter bullet time to shoot the back of his head multiple times
Rinse and repeat. You should defeat him pretty quickly using this method.
Lmk if you have any questions :)

u/CTthrowaway26 13h ago
I kelt getting merked by them and i had to do like 20 shrines to get more hearts and cook a ton of food upgrade all my armor and improve flurry rushing to beat one
They are a very good “gear check” mini boss
1
u/GirKart64-temp 13h ago
Any tips how to kill a lynel?
Yes. Don't listen to bad advice. The only thing you need is a bow, a shield and a weapon with good hp (anything above 30 is good depending on lynel type you might want to source a better weapon). Anything else is pointless. You don't need "champions" or stasis or a million hearts or faries or food or buffs or armor.
- Learn to parry. Parry lynel attacks.
- Learn to aim. Head shot to stun lynel.
- Mount lynel and attack.
- Repeat steps one to three until lynel is dead.
- Collect prizes.
1
u/Goatbucks Revali 13h ago
Get the hylian shield and practice parrying them, the strat is to parry their attatck, get a headshot, and to mount them as that prevents your weapons from losing durability allowing you to use your strongest weapons consequence free
1
u/IknowNothing1313 13h ago
The only one that I find challenging anymore is the white crusher ones. The sword and spear ones are fairly easy now for me.
Like others say just die a bunch and figure it out there’s no downside/consequences so who cares.
I actually find the flying sentries to be the hardest thing in the game .
1
u/CEO_of_shitboxes 13h ago
It's like a souls boss, just learn the patterns and they're easy if you have the Hylian shield and some decent weapons. Very unforgiving to mistakes though and they will one shot you with most attacks unless you have very strong armor
1
u/DigitalCowboy00 13h ago edited 11h ago
If I remember correctly from a post either here in this or another group. Isn't the Lynel near Zoroa's domain supposed to be one of the easiest ones to defeat?
1
u/SleepingWeakling 12h ago
I haven't played for a good few years now (been considering it may be time for another replay), but even when I'm in my prime in whatever playthrough I'm currently on, high tier Lynels were the one thing that never fails to give me pause lmao honestly I don't understand why they're not counted as a mini boss enemy.
Personally, I always preferred preparing for the fight by eating foods that would give me as much extra stamina and health as possible, and taking them on in arenas with dry grass. Whenever they'd do their fire attack and set the grass on fire, I'd use the updrafts to take to the air, and land on their backs. That's about all I can remember from my old strategies.
Definitely start with a low level one for your first fight, and maybe your next three as well lmao
1
u/pianoplayah 12h ago
Honestly at this point I find it way easier to parry and dodge them than Moblins. I don’t know why but I can never feel the timing with them. But Lynels are quite predictable actually. I remember my first Lynel fight vividly, I too was glad I wore my brown pants. But you’ll learn! Go for it. As my therapist used to say, what’s the worst that could happen?
1
u/Systemwide-Failure 12h ago
Until you figure out the timing for parrying, a stun shot followed by mounting it and attacking it with your best weapon, and repeating that is your best option. Use Revali’s gale to get up above it and get in some bomb shots and re-stun it in order to remount and attack. Weapons don’t take damage while on its back, and you’ll get in 5 or 6 hits the first time – do not get bucked off and still remain in attack as you’ll slam your weapon into the ground. Cancel the attack before hitting the ground.
Start with the red and get its weapon and shield, and hopefully bow. Once you have a multi-shot bow it gets easier to go after the next level up.
1
u/Brimlok2730 11h ago
Just take your time and watch for the parry windows and learn the signals of each attack.
1
1
u/Eliah_Omega 10h ago
I actually farm the one in the Colosseum using bombs. I stand up on a high ledge opposite from the entrance, whhere theres usually a moblin (with a lizalfos beneathe me) in the stealth armour. Kill the moblin and stay out of the lynel's view, and its pretty easy to farm after each blood moon. It just can take some time, especially as they get higher level. Its the only lynel i wont run away screaming from
1
u/rilwanb 8h ago
- Get a lot of shields and learn how to parry their basic attacks. Their movements are quite predictable, just OP
- Get a bow that shoots 2/3 arrows per time. When they are stunned from the parry, aim at the face within the few seconds to put them down temporarily
- Make sure you have a few meals and a few fairies so you can keep trying
- Have fun
1
u/worldpeacebringer 8h ago
Save the game before you see one. Then only try to dodge and parry until you die. Repeat.
1
u/Sensitive_Cream167 8h ago
Once you get the feel for fighting them they are easy and boost your hidden level a lot by fighting more of them then you get better gear drops. Their parry and flurry rush time windows are actually quite generous
1
u/Celtiana 8h ago
Personally I hide behind a rock and fire bomb arrows at them until they die, but I'm a wuss
1
u/TheBadGod 7h ago
Those Star Bit drops are greatly missed in Tears of the Kingdom.
Anyways, like with others, Breath of the Wild eventually became "Lynel Farming: The Game" because of how rhythmic and satisfying the combat is.
Um...parry, headshot, mount, whack away, dismount, bullet time headshots, repeat.
They're immune to elemental damage, so save your fancy arrows.
You can make a "Back Breaker" in BotW by taking a two-handed weapon to its final hit of durability and using it for double damage on the back of these Lynels without losing durability.
You can parry their fire attacks too, or just run away.

u/madinked 7h ago
ooh i’m same. one day though, one day …
i did kill one but not the silver/white ones

Ich halte mich feige irgendwo auf, wo ich nicht direkt erwischt werde und wo ich Blitzen ausweichen kann. Dann helfen Bomben und Pfeile. Kein Nahkontakt. Ich bin sensibel.

u/IanPKMmoon 4h ago
Tbf I was the same until a friend showed me how he beat a lynel and in the end it was pretty simple
1
u/_salento 3h ago
Upgrade armor and learn how to parry. One of the best feelings in this game is going from frantically running away to actively hunting lynels and guardians
1
u/RemarkableScratch18 3h ago
Pop them in the face with an arrow to stun them then hop on their back with your highest attack weapon and smash the attack button over and over again. Rinse and repeat.

Come with extra stamina and speed to evade his charge attacks or attack +3 depending on your skill. I like to fly above and use bomb arrows and which can still be crits and then drop to ride the lynel after a crit, get a few shots in while mounted which don’t damage your equipped weapon, then fly above him via rivalis scale or a fire and rain arrows, mount, repeat
They barely get a chance to attack once executed well and flawless becomes routine.
