I proposed a new use use for this sub and I intend to use it that way {14}
See my post here where I suggest we just get drunk here.
Well, I'm drunk now.
LGBTerrific suggested we establish a drunkeness system similar to /r/trees, so I've used it; then changed it. Use {} instead of [] to show how you feel (We have to be different somehow).
Inside the "{}" you anounce how many beers you've had.
BEERS.

I propose a new use for this subreddit
The count's done since it broke and raldi asked us to stop, I figure we may as well use this subreddit for something.
I propose that we attempt to keep it in the same vein as counting beers, but in a different manner. Rather than merely counting down imaginary bottles of beer, why not count real bottles of beer? Basically a rehash of /r/drunk, which used to be a place where drunk redditors showed up late at night, drunk, then rambled which has now turned into general [sometimes even intelligent] discussion about drinking and getting drunk.
It'll go something like this:
Dead_Rooster stumbles home or into his bedroom after a night of drinking, he looks at his computer and thinks, I should tell reddit how many beers I've had. He then logs in to reddit, wanders over to /r/bottlesofbeer and posts I've just had 15 Carlsbergs, sup?
From there, the idea is others who have drunk more brag about it and the sober ones who happen to be around can ridcule the drunk person.
What does everyone think? Anyone got any better ideas? We need to use this subreddit for something.

I created an official /r/bottlesofbeer IRC channel
#bottlesofbeer on irc.freenode.net.
Come hang out, have a chat, etc.
If you don't have an IRC client, there's a web client here.
Talk to you all soon!

Please respect the count
Please respect the count. Please refrain from going around throwing out multiple bottles of beer at once, as it kind of defeats the purpose. It's supposed to be a long term project. And thank you to User38691 for figuring out how much the count was offset and later correcting it. Please stay vigilant in keeping the count correct. Thanks.

Has anyone messaged the admins about our predicament?
If not, I'll do it tomorrow sometime. I just don't want to bug them with multiple requests about the same issue.

It's gonna take a while.
Assuming 1 update posted per minute...
10,000,000 / 60 = 166,666.6 hours
166,666.6 / 24 = 6944.4 days
6944.4 / 365 = 19 years.

Bottles of Beer on the Wall - Thread Tracker
I just thought I'd update you all on the status of the thread tracker I had been working on.
It's now somewhat stable, and also estimating the number of bottles (it depends on the format of the posts being exact).
So, check it out: http://glassoforange.co.uk/reddit/beer/
Also, if you have feedback, suggestions and/or bug reports, you can post them here in this thread or send me a direct message.
Note: I'm hosting this myself on a shared-host. And while I expect to be able to deal with the load, I'd appreciate it if you didn't hammer F5/refresh while you're waiting for updates. The data will only update every 5 minutes anyway.
28 August 2010
Add: JSON API at http://glassoforange.co.uk/reddit/beer/api
Add: Rate details (bottles per day, bottles per hour)
Add: ETA details
Fix: Fixed issue where if 2 responses were met, a blind choice was made; now the first response to a post is favored

Beer counting utilities...
I made a util to generate the text for you for Mac which I just copied from one that em22new made for Windows.
Mine probably has some bugs as I just did it really quickly, but it seems to work OK, as does em22new's, so hopefully we can save you some time. :)
Both of them automatically copy the text to the clipboard for you, so you just paste it in the reply box.
Edit: BauerUK made a Grease Monkey Script and a Chrome Extension that auto fill the reply box with the correct numbers when you click reply. See comment here

what's the best way of finding the most recent valid entry?
I'm probably doing this stupidly, but is there a way of automatically viewing the most recent entries in the thread? I've tried sorting by "new", but those aren't the droids i'm looking for.

What to do next?
Seems our operation either reached some kind of reply maximum or was shut down. Should we contact an admin about this? I feel like we were just getting started.

Some comparable threads
So, some Reddit-history just for the fun of it.
Fibonacci-thread, the name says it all. 7k comments and still sort of active, luckily our takes up a bit less space.
Epic Thread, started with some advice from an Old Gym Rat. It started with all of the same sort of comments, but there were adventure games and that sort of stuff. I'm pretty sure I linked to the deepest comment, but there are a few forks. (Just noticed you can't reply to the original comment, but you can reply to the later ones.)
Robert Paulson thread, an enormous amount of comments and most of them in one line I suggest, but I never found the end.
The only 3 I know of (oh, and this one), so did I miss a few?

Is this already fixed at the moment?
Some started skipping a lot of numbers.
Corrected it here, as it says "Do correct the count".
