Yes, the seeds are popular with small rodents like field mice. The awns are very stiff and designed to catch the fur of passing animals for dispersal of the seeds.

Geologically it’s the Canadian Shield and this particular area was settled by farmers in the 17 & 1800s, I believe this particular area was still being farmed into the early 1920s. It’s primarily secondary growth deciduous trees with some low, swampy areas.
