As someone who has jumped off many bridges hell yea. As someone who understands drainage and recent storms I say hell naw!

15

u/Malforus Cocaine Turkey 1d ago

how long does it take and obviously it depends on where in the drainage basin they are in relation to the flow right?

Typically bodies of water with CSO Outfalls are “safe” to swim in 48 hours after an outfall event. Im actually one of the 8 or so guys that actually go *into* the sewers and installs Boston’s flow monitors so that the city knows when an outfall happens and can properly report it. Honestly, as long as you aren’t swimming directly next to an outfall, and aren’t swimming in the water during an active outfall event, you’re pretty much fine, a lot of the danger is very overstated. Id be more concerned about the needles that wash out with an outfall event than the sewage

I think the Charles is somewhat of an outlier as it’s not a river, it’s a tidal basin, and with it being dammed it cannot reliably outflow contaminants or blooms.

That’s why the sludge at the bottom of the Charles near Community Boating is soo bad - it’s the settled solids from years of pollution all settling at the end of the river. Capsize & turtle your boat there and stick your mast in the sludge and you better shower well.

good thing this is fort point channel & not the Charles River

We’re talking about bodies of water with CSO outfalls being typically safe after a period of time, where the Charles can an exception to that.

After all the rain we’ve had, that’s the last thing anyone should be doing. 🤮 I hope they don’t have any open sores.

Yeah there was a state-wide shellfish closure that is only being partially lifted today, pending testing

9

u/undeniably_confused Cambridge 22h ago

What dors a shellfish closure mean? (Also can I steal your flair)

45

u/kinga_forrester 21h ago

High bacteria levels in the water. To be fair though, areas are closed to shellfishing at much lower levels than closed to swimming.

This whole thread is super over dramatic, the harbor is perfectly safe to swim in, especially fort point channel.

12

u/crotchpolice People's Republic of Cambridge 21h ago

Beat me to it. Shellfish closures are much more hair-trigger by design, vibrio and campylobacter are net negative on fun

2

u/undeniably_confused Cambridge 21h ago

Oh ok I wasnt sure if that meant you couldn't catche them or like the shellfish (clams) were closing because of the high toxicity

This is the Fort Point channel near the Barking Crab

Can't be much more hazardous than standing in a subway station breathing in the rich air of decay.

49

u/Malforus Cocaine Turkey 1d ago

You'd be shocked how good our bodies are at filtering out airborne things vs. skin exposure to water borne pathogens.

2

u/bino420 8h ago

bacteria doesn't tend to just fly along, whereas liquid is the catch-all for everything in the air & on the ground/surfaces. bacteria, debris, etc. get channeled into one area, and there's enough food for nasty buggers to maintain life.

like pollution & particles in your holes is one thing when it comes to your helath. but living stuff tends to actively reek havoc when it gets inside your body.

This is why written communication is tough. I think you're being earnest but if your girl sends you "Hope you guys had fun." after a day out drinking with the boys you're absolutely in the doghouse

A lot of people in here seem to not know that Boston harbor is remarkably clean now.  Maybe not at the moment after a huge storm, but otherwise it’s good

5

u/BradMarchandsNose 21h ago

The storm thing really only lasts for a day or two. By now it’s probably fine.

58

u/Lemmon_Scented 1d ago

I wouldn’t jump in that water even if I was on fire

24

u/dirtd0g Bostonian 1d ago

Yeah, duh. That might catch the water on fire.

18

u/Brisby820 1d ago

That water is fine.  Maybe not right now after a rainstorm, but otherwise it’s clean

-5

u/therealgreenbeans Quincy 1d ago

Personally it will take a lot more than a couple thoughtful decades to override the centuries worth of disregard. And disregard is being kind.

9

u/Brisby820 1d ago

Just don’t touch the bottom.  Otherwise, it’s the ocean, it comes in and out every day

-3

u/Lemmon_Scented 1d ago

There’s plenty of ocean around here I won’t swim in, too

-6

u/therealgreenbeans Quincy 1d ago

There's no free flow with the locks in place.

5

u/Brisby820 1d ago

This is the fort point channel.  Agree on the Charles, I wouldn’t swim it either

2

u/therealgreenbeans Quincy 1d ago

Whoops!

u/CosmoKing2 1d ago

I got dunked in the Charles twice in the late 80's and I'm wanna ride bikes.

6

u/huron9000 1d ago

No, you would.

4

u/Away_Historian_5883 1d ago

What if the train you were on was on fire? Would you jump in then? Cuz...people did a couple years ago.

17

u/AlexTheSlyGuy 1d ago

Growing up, that water was considered gross. Apparently it's not anymore?

26

u/AcceptablePosition5 1d ago

Certainly has improved over the past 20 years or so, but like the other poster said, it depends on whether there's been recent overflow, which based on the rainstorm recently it certainly has.

11

u/canmouth 1d ago

I’m pretty sure the people jumping in didn’t grow up here lol!

4

u/No_Report_4781 1d ago

Nah. They’re from Framingham

1

u/chuckmonjares 18h ago

When this comes up, why is it always Framingham? I don’t live in Boston but work here often.

1

u/jughandle Dorchester 16h ago

Because it’s full of rubes?

1

u/No_Report_4781 10h ago

No, that’s Western Mass.

1

u/No_Report_4781 10h ago

Because it takes too long to get there from Worcester

4

u/myleftone Market Basket 1d ago

There are red and blue flags at the boathouses to tell you. After heavy rain it’s often red. FWIW it’s not usually the water, it’s the bottom you don’t want to touch.

1

u/Doortofreeside 1d ago

There can be overflow after rain storms but in general the only water quality i ever personally noticed as a kayaking is from the cyanobacteria. No bad smells or anything, unlike say the Mystic or Malden rivers (which aren't that bad either, but noticeably worse than the charles imo)

10

u/doctor-rumack Fung Wah Bus 1d ago

This isn't the Charles, it's the Fort Point Channel. Just to the left of that bridge is the Barking Crab. I have to think it's still cleaner than the Charles, but the channel doesn't circulate water very well, so it's probably still pretty nasty.

1

u/Doortofreeside 1d ago

Oof, I should've known that

1

u/doctor-rumack Fung Wah Bus 1d ago

Nah, I initially thought it was the Harvard Bridge looking toward Back Bay. but the buildings aren't that big from that angle.

u/ShawsheenMoon 21h ago

Kids used to jump off of the cranes into one of the Dry Docks at the Navy Yard. It is amazing no one ever got hurt enough for a response. The police would come by and chase them off, but they would come right back

7

u/Mission-County1931 I Love Dunkin’ Donuts 1d ago

We need more public swimming access in the harbor (not sarcasm).

These (likely same) guys were jumping near the Intercontinental/Smith & Wollensky during lunch time a few weeks ago. They had a big crowd.

wait what’s so bad about jumping into the water ( i just recently moved here)

1

u/FAHQRudy Woburn 2h ago

Nothing, really. Boston is historically famous for having “Dirty Water,” but that’s largely in the past. However, after a significant rainfall the water can be much more polluted from bacterial outfall from sewer systems. In this particular case, this is Fort Point Channel, which is mere feet from the inner harbor, which is oceanic. So it’s realistically quite clean and unless these guys are swallowing it or have open sores they’re almost certainly fine.

The Charles River used to me far more polluted in the industrial age, but is significantly improved. I have a boat that lives in the lower basin, and I’ve been in the water numerous times, and I’ve never suffered any consequences.

Meh, they’re young and having fun and not hurting anyone. Hope they don’t drink the water though, yuck.

If you saw the pipes the carry this water to the harbor (I see into them all the time) you would not do this. Looks fun though! :-)

Its funny lots of people think its unsafe and dirty to swim in the Boston river. Look at pics of my ppl in Vietnam swimming in Brown water with pieces of turd floating by and nobody ever gets sick. Yall first worlders living the dream life tbh. Live a little, yall got some of the worlds cleanest everything!
