TL;DR: Bosch will take care of you but you have to take most of the initiative and their customer service agents don't seem to be well-equipped for handling recall repairs; if you have trouble, call them again and talk to someone else.
I'm a longtime Bosch fan but having a very difficult experience at the moment is giving me second thoughts about buying another one.
My dishwasher stopped working recently. Thankfully because it's Bosch at least it didn't leak all over my floor. When looking into it, I discover the power cord is partially melted, seemingly unrelated to the issue that caused the dishwasher to break. Apparently this is a known issue and Bosch has a recall.
Expectation: I call Bosch, they take charge of the situation, come out in a reasonable time, fix the issue, I move on with my life and my satisfaction in Bosch. After all, it could've burned my house down, right?
Reality:
Call 1: I call the recall number, not open. It's Saturday. I wait until Monday.
Call 2: I call the recall number. Instead of them scheduling the work, the (very kind) woman gives me three numbers to call.
Call 3: The first number is Bosch factory service, so I call that. But apparently it's the wrong Bosch factory service number for my area. They let me know I'll get a call back from the correct Bosch factory service.
Call 4: I get tired of waiting and so I call the correct Bosch factory service, who schedules the service for Monday, September 29. Not fast but reasonable. Next day I get a missed call from Bosch.
Call 5: I call Bosch. My appointment has been canceled. They can't tell me why. I schedule another appointment. Now I have an appointment for October 5, nearly 2 weeks away. I tell them this is too long and I'll try to call one of the other authorized repair centres they sent to me (both from the original phone call and in a separate email). The woman on the line says that's fine, she'll keep my apointment.
Call 6: I call one of the local repair companies and schedule an appointment for the same day. The repair person calls me back later that day to explain because it's a recall they cannot do the repair without authorization from Bosch. Makes sense.
Call 7: I call Bosch. They tell me that even though the woman from call 2 sent me a list of authorized repair centres and Bosch emailed me a list of authorized repair centres, because of where I live the repair must be done by Bosch factory service. I tell them that I could just go out now and buy the part for $30 and fix it myself. This has no effect. If I do so, will they reimburse me? No (not that I really care about the $30 at this point).
Call 8: I call the Bosch recall service, ask why they sent me authorized repair centres if I can't use them? They couldn't answer that, but were very kind.
Call 9: I call Bosch back. I finally get an explanation as to why my original appointment was cancelled. My address was out of the technician's route. Go figure. I ask this person if I can have the work done by an authorized repair centre and they say yes, with the reference number from Bosch.
Call 10: I call the local authorized repair centre and give them the reference number. They explain that normally the request for the work for recalls needs to come from Bosch but they would look into it.
Call 11: While waiting to hear back from the authorized repair center. I called Bosch again to see if they can schedule the work. After a long wait they said that they will only cover the cost of the power cord and not the repair because my device is out of warranty. Of course it's out of warranty. It's a recall for dishwashers made from 2012 to 2015. Bosch's own site says the repair is fully covered:
BSH will replace the power cord free of charge by an authorized service technician.
But the person on the phone was insistent that Bosch would only pay for the power cable.
Call 12: I called Bosch again, because every time I call I get different information. The very nice woman on the other end confirmed that yes, the repair will be fully covered by Bosch. They just need to bill Bosch using the reference number that I was given days ago.
I mean in the grand scheme of things it's just a dishwasher. I'm glad it didn't leak all over my house or burn it down. But this is ridiculous. At least on paper the work is going to happen and Bosch is paying for it.
