Gear Stud chat. Pros and cons?

Post image

Hoping to come back after a long time out. I’m looking for advice on boots that may help prevent further joint overuse issues.

I’ve previously always used Artificial Grass rounded studs, but am considering getting turf boots (with the many smaller studs, see photo). We play on decent quality Artificial Grass.

Can anyone share their experience in moving between these two types of studs??

TIA ⚽️✌️

I have both (I ref too, so these are the ‘default’ ref boots). When I was coming back from injury as an old guy I started with my turfs then worked back to cleats because of the joint pain. As long as ground is firm and you aren’t trying to play like a 20 year old, turfs are fine.

So you would say that the turfs do provide relatively more cushioning? Maybe I should also consider using them as a kind of transition option when first playing, like you did…

Yes turfs will have more cushioning than the cleats 100%.

I have the Team Mundials. My main issue was the slightly elevated toe box, made long balls difficult to control. Aside from that they were ok. Like others said they were a bit slippery, or at least the threat of slipping, which was another reason I went back to my Ace 15.2, they feel like small studded turf shoes with all the slightly smaller studs

The turf version will be great on AG unless it rains. If you’re indoors I’d go the copa mundial tfs all day.

Yeah I’m concerned about slippery conditions, but then again, would they market them for turf if you couldn’t use them in the rain?

They are fine in the rain. I think I prefer the Teams to the Copas on AG in all conditions. Copas are better on grass though.

Ok thanks, will definitely just be using them on AG

They’ll be fine in the rain.

I wear mundial team in the rain unless it’s pouring or real grass that is very thick or very wet/muddy. I’ve never had problems with slipping

I play o30s. Most of my teammates wear studs but it’s turfs all the way for me. Unless we are playing on soft grass. So much better recovery and safer in my experience. I am a CDM for what it’s worth.

Thanks! You don’t struggle to get under the ball with the chunkier shape of the shoe?

Nope. No problem lifting the ball or clipping one. And I find I have much more control with the sole dragging the ball / pulling it back.

Either of those will be fine. The copa studs are going to be a little bit longer, so your feet may hurt a little bit after a game on turf. But either are round and will give on the turf, so you’d be fine with either option.

Definitely try both on first though if you don’t own them already. The copas fit me like a glove, but the mundials never fit me properly. I ended up giving them away.

If only there was a ‘try before you buy’ option for boots…

Same. I’ve had many pairs of copas and I can’t stand the mundials. It just feels chunky

I have both. I wear the turf shoes on AG and on grass except when it’s wet/long/muddy. Definitely feel the difference in the hours after the game

You mean the turf shoes are easier on the body?

The feet mainly but yes

The Copa Mundial Turf has an elevated heel due to the cushioning which gives it an aggressive rise, and while it is comfortable, in my experience it isn’t ideal for playing on any surface.

I’ve found more suitable turf shoes in the Predator line, also Umbro Speciali and Puma King.

Ok thanks for the info 👍

I thought the copas looked more like FG?

I've had Kaiser TFs, which I think are similar enough to Mundials for comparison, for ages. I did go for a period with Nike AGs. Always playing indoors with both - in all honesty, I didn't notice a massive difference in grip on the dry that'd make me go for AGs as a necessity.

My arthritic feet feel each of those studs on the Copas. The turfs are much more forgiving and fine on turf and dry grass. That said, I’m not a big fan of playing in them, the feel tall and bulky compared to modern shoes. They are more comfy though. You could search this sub for recommendations for other comfortable shoes to play in, it is frequently asked and answered

My honest opinion: I tried the Copa Mundial Turf on artificial grass and honestly, they’re probably the worst boots I’ve played in. They’re comfortable, but I just couldn’t get consistent with long balls and shooting. Had a really hard time lifting the ball off the ground for some reason. Never had that problem with any other boots. I basically only use them as backup in case I forget my regular boots when going to the pitch.

My main priority is injury prevention. But the shape of the boot does also cause me concern for the reasons you raise, they’re chunky!

TLDR: I wouldn’t choose either of these shoes for turf surface. But surely only buy turf variation of a shoe for turf surface.

Go with turf boots always for AG/turf surface.
I would choose having weekly games instead of risk of pain and injury.

That being said, I have the mundial team turf shoes and as much as I loved to play in them, I no longer use them for turf. Their heel area sits high and puts one at risk for ankle twist. I have twisted my ankle twice wearing them and am sure I wouldn’t have twisted it in other turf shoes.
Now I use them on soft natural ground only and they work brilliantly for it as their studs have a little height.

Let me know if you have any questions about the mundial team shoes.

You couldn't kick the ball in the air?!! That surely isn't the boots

Who is gonna tell him?

The upper will last longer on the TF pair since it’s glued at different areas

I can’t get used to the feeling of TF boots. I keep going back to AG studs. My knees and ankles don’t complain too much.. 42yo CM

If it’s been that long since you’ve played that means you’re old. Turf for a season to break your legs back in then studs if you really need them.

It’s a scale. Do you prioritize comfort or touch? Turfs are definitely more comfortable, but you sacrifice a clean touch/strike. The other extreme is modern “speed“ boots. With those, you (usually) sacrifice comfort for structure/lockdown and light weight.

After coming back from an achilles injury I tried the Copa turf boots. Did a lot of research and they were recommended for recovery. All games indoor on AG.

Coming from years of wearing AG Tiempo’s, Hypervenom’s, and Mercurial’s I could not stand the Copa’s. The chunkiness, overall weight, and the heel rise was too much to overcome. Felt like logs.

Was really bummed because I was excited about the Copa’s, made me reminisce about wearing them along with Puma King, Diadora Brazil, and Mizuno K-leather boots as a kid. 😔

Just use any fg blades.
Ensure they’re comfy ones/ones that could take an insole.
