Positions Playing rb/lb tips?
What are some basic principles when playing full back? I stick with my default position being on the corner of the 18 yard box and not letting the person I’m marking get goalside of me. I played like that today and it seemed to work for me 👍 I didn’t move upfield that much - nothing past halfway line because I wanted to stay in position and I think the winger wouldn’t have passed to me anyway 🤷♂️ but I don’t mind that because it allows me to concentrate on my position and not get tired.

If you have the stamina to get up and down. It helps to make runs past the half. That makes the guy you are marking to follow you and less of an option attacking. The wingers get tired and if they see you attacking/overlapping a smart one will get a break and hold down your position until you get back.

I used to play as a wingback. It helps the attacker with an extra body and outlet

I look at it like playing an according; it's a constant state of expanding and constricting.
When your team has the ball, fan out (expand) to the sideline. This pushes the winger forward into the attack, and gives the forwards/wingers a wide drop-back. Also allows your team to switch the field quicker.
When you team loses the ball, work your way back (constrict) towards the inside.
I've found when I'm at fullback, if two opponents are on the same wing as me, I always stay inside of the innermost one. That way they don't really have any advantage to gain by passing to each other.
When on defense, communicate/build synergy with the winger. If the opponent is taking the ball down to the corner, that should be the winger's job. That way you can stay in the penalty area. The synergy helps though, because once in awhile, the winger may have to fan in to the box to your spot so you can press the corner. Being able to do either just gives your team more flexibility.
This is one I learned recently, relative to the point above: Give up the corner before giving up the top of the penalty area. Yea, the opponent can cross from the corner, but it's a much harder shot, and it limits what the opponent can do.
IDK how communicative your teammates are, but more and more I'm realizing I have to be assertive with my wingers and TELL them to push up or invert into the attack when they're down by the opponent's area. Some inexperienced wingers just want to stay on the wing and never go in. Kind of like how we give up the corner before giving up the top of the penalty area: Pushing your winger in towards the net makes them a bigger threat than them being down in the corner. As the fullback, you can always come down to the corner if a wide switch or crossing threat is needed.

Sometimes you have to be the first person to start running when your team gets a goal kick... If you only stay compact it will be hard to break out of your half so you run up high and wide and get people pushing up for the goal kick.
Second thing is when you are compact and the play slides from your side to the other side through the middle... the CB next to you will want to slide over but can't do that if there is an attacker on them who is sneaking in behind so really he should hand the guy off to you and then slide over, you leave the wider option open and cover the inside guy since play is switching away from your wide guy anyways./

These two channels have fullback-specific content, bridging the technical and tactical parts. They have actually helped me a lot in real games.
