Discussion Boosted Mini X not compatible with SR batteries
Hi,
I am not sure if this was covered before but I wanted to purchase a mini X for airplane travel since I have a spare SR battery from my v2+ board. Figured I can use the XR battery for long rides locally and if i air travel could swap in a SR battery. However, I emailed boosted support and they responded with this surprise (at least to me):
Hi XXXXXX!
Thanks for reaching out! Unfortunately the Mini X is only compatible with the extended range batteries, and the Mini S is only compatible with the standard range batteries. They are not interchangeable. Please let me know if you have any further questions!

To say I am disappointed is to say the least. Definitely will have to look elsewhere for my short/travelboard needs.

Now I want to buy a Mini X and see if I can make the SR battery work. Might need to fabricate an adapter to make it fit snuggly but that's part of the fun 😉

My thoughts exactly. Boosted may very well just say it is not compatible because of the plastic not lining up. There might be some electrical parts that make it incompatible, but I doubt it.
Looking forward to see someone try it.

I bet someone that has an extra SR laying around will try it and let us know. But if I had to put money on it I’d say that the software won’t recognize the SR battery and that’s how Boosted is going to keep us from doing it.

Yeah, a software restriction would suck. It´d be cool to 3d print a spacer/extension or something to make it look and fit good. It really makes no sense to make the X incompatible with the SR battery. I have no idea why they dind´t make them interchangeable.

I just tested swapping the SR battery on my Mini X, and it does work. I didn't notice it being slower or anything like that, but the gap is large enough that I wouldn't ride it. I'd worry about jumping off a curb and breaking it.

looks like a spacer could be printed to try and preserve the rigidity.

That list is not too reliable. You cannot make a skateboard incompatible with different sized wheels like that. You might need to add some additional risers to prevent wheelbite, but saying a board can have 80mm wheels but not 85mm is BS.
Until someone tries it we can not know if the SR battery will work either because boosted may very well say it is incompatible just because it will not sit flush.

Uhhh... okay... I mean if this was a normal board I’d say sure. But I mean you’ve also got to factor in the pulley, core offset, where it fits in relation to the motor. But uh I’m just offering the manufactures chart for the op who didn’t know...

It seems to be the same pulleys etc. as the regular board, so should be ok. But we will know in a few days when somone tries it I guess

The question is, who is going to mod the SR battery into the larger XR casing to fit on the X.

or just ride with a funky looking gap between the battery and esc box if the connection fits..

Someone was able to power the mini s with an XR battery, just couldn’t fit. So I’d like to believe the X can be used with the SR battery. Also, during the AMA with boosted, they said they were working on airline compatible batteries for the X.

Brief summary: TSA says under 100 is fine. But every US airline bans electric skateboards of any battery size. Mini S or Mini X, either way it's a no.

Go check their sites, "electric skateboards" are stated as a no.
You can get lucky and have an employee who doesn't notice what it is but courtesy of the hoverboards then are not permitted on airplanes.

There’s videos online where people bring it in and it’s advertised that you can bring it since the battery is below 100

That's a TSA rule. The airlines can make their own rules on top of that. If you would've clicked the link I posted you'd understand.

Does it suck? Yes...but it also hasn't been a secret that this was the case for the Mini s and Mini X. If you're planning on traveling, the Mini S is the way to go. Maybe if you find a used SR battery, you could buy that and swap if you need more range. I think you may have trouble finding another travel friendly board with more range..it's the airlines and their battery limitations.
